Why is RuneScape a 'Game for Nerds'?

The Observer

Recommended Posts

Many people have said this. I'm sure that you have witnessed it yourself. People saying that RuneScape sucks and is a game for nerds, etc. What I'm asking is why people are thinking this way towards the game.

I think that people are just too lazy to work for their levels and prefer games that have cheat codes.

What do you think?

They think it's a game for nerds because they see people playing rs as a social outlet that's below socializing in real life. They figure since these people are playing rs, they have nothing better to do.

It's just a natural sterotype, such as no-lifers play WoW, all asians are smart, fat people like the sight of twinkies...No need to think beyond the reason, since its just a streotype.

You know what I say to someone that calls me a nerd for playing RS? Yeah, so what? What's wrong with that?

I do disagree with the statement that "everyone who plays RS is a nerd", though. The only nerds in this game are the ones who are reasonably successful at it, unlike the whiny kids that apparently have nothing better to do than sit around and beg for free all day. If they really were nerds, they'd have more intelligence.

I'd venture to say that every human being alive is at least some part nerdy... just most are too afraid to admit it because of the childish notion that that's a terrible, bad thing

I think people consider Runescape a "Game for nerds" because of the fact that you need to level. Most people like games that the ammount of time played isn't the most important part, but skill and reflexes.

I also think people may assume this due to the combat system. Poke *10* Poke *0* Poke *8* you eat a lobster poke *0* and so on. To say the least, something like this is going to be a major flaw to the people who have been playing games with a combat system that requires more involvement.

Or they could just be idiots :-$

First, it's not an FPS.

Second, it's time-consuming.

They're very smart for not choosing a game where you have to work for levels. Why should you work in a game?

Jagex needs to make RS a bit less grind-based and add some more (challenging) quests (that... actually take skill) with nice XP rewards.

Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:

There's nothing wrong with being a nerd, but there IS something wrong when you put more value into a videogame than your own life. Online gamers have gotten the harsh stereotype for lacking social lives, which unfortunately for some part that is true.

By the way, the richest people on the planet are nerds as well as the majority of world leaders. Being prejudiced as a nerd may come in handy. \'

"300 programmers make their futile but glorious last stand against 1000000 angry players in The battle of Misthalin. They fight for honor, glory and new content sacrificing themselves so that their game may live on. This is Madness! This Is JAGEEEX!"

wrong answer llamster. runescape doesnt need to change itself to meet the lowered bar of the masses.

as for the real answer. it's just an ignorant comment from a mentality similar to nike shoes are better then reebok. doesnt mean a damn thing. says more about the person putting down then it says anything about runescape.

as for runescape's success, if you think its easy competing with huge corporations that own other corporations that can provide advertising, news articles, and competitive priority from shops; it just shows how great the game is in spite of all that, to be as popular as it is and you can bet that jagex has had offers for buyout from these huge companies basically to remove them as competition; they havent been bought out and remain, the corporate/government/powers that be usually make offers you cant refuse because its dog eat dog.

some people like a challenge and dont want to complete a game in a day or few days and runescape has a certain style that does appeal to people and why should they change to just make another game that can be completed in a few days or where mediocrity can be achieved after a short while. in runescape, the fun is in the journey, learning a trade, completing quests, learning to make money, getting better armour, etc.

again, it says more about the person criticising runescape then it does about you or the game.

runescape is going strong and changes made to it recently like clan chat and the grand exchange show that.

and yeah they probably tried it, got called a noob, tried mining and woodcut, then gave up because they're quitters and rationalise that its the game that's the problem and not them. but we know they just wanted the advantages of being high lvled 3 days to a week in. and it's their loss really. i could go on but i've generally covered most of the points i wanted to make.

Meh, I wouldn't consider Runescape a game for nerds. I like the game and the people I meet in it. I have had people tell me Runescape is awful and I defend it at times. People that bash Runescape (in my experiences) are usually players of high graphic games on new systems. They put more emphasis on graphics and never even try the game before they come to their conclusion in their mind.

Well, that's a general response to any Mmorpg. Not rpg's, because I have found few calling Final Fantasy "a game for nerds". Mmorpg's are considered that because a LOT of players (at least 80% of the population) are obsessed over the game, and in some games, they will make their character PERFECT in a obsessive manner. Also, this game couldn't be used in the other definition of nerd "a smart person" because a lot of the players aren't that intelligent.

Also, it might be called a game for nerds not by people who use "cheat codes" but by people who play online first person shooters. See, those games don't have cyberers, roleplaying people (you know what I mean), and obsessive power leveling. Though, I'm not understanding what's wrong with roleplaying...well anyways.

Some of it is caused by uniformed people who are just saying what their friends think. So, that could also be a cause of it...anyway's, Hippy out.

Pretty much everything posted on here is true.

But above all its just a stereotype that intelligent people happen to be the best at the game (notice i don't include the stupid mass noob population in this 8-) )

I'd probably qualify as a "nerd" but i couldn't care less. I love my life, and think I'm much better off than some "jock".

Nerds have social lives too =.= just not ones filled with idiotic behavior.

"Jock" social life is not idiotic. You should try it some day, before you go off writing it off as stupid.

RS requires very little intelligence.

Learn to read pl0x, because I didn't criticize their social lives specifically.

FYI I have tried it out, and much prefer having brains instead of just living for the day.

Anddd...Intelligent people naturally have a higher capability for monotonous repetitive behaviour like studying (and RS), and are capable of dedicating themselves to a worthwhile cause.

EDIT: Lawl, I guess I kinda did specifically target their social lives #-o

I still stand by what I've written tho.

Intelligent people do not engage themselves in monotonous repetitive behavior. They know how to budget time so they don't have to do such things  Plus studying shouldn't be monotonous! It's fun (or at least engaging) if you do it right and aren't blind e.g. "OMG STUDYING IS FOR GEEKS LOL LOL LOL"

What good does "having brains" do for you? What's so wrong with just living? :-k

Anyway, in response to how people are saying RS requires dedication: It is easy to dedicate time to RS. It is an easy game, so it's not hard to "dedicate" ample amounts of time to it.

Some of you may be wondering why I'm so cynical on RS. I'm not - I'm just trying to add in considerations of different viewpoints.

Because WoW has better graphics. Java games are for geeks.

[/sarcasm]

Because people who call us nerds can't be better than us at RuneScape, so they try to be better than us in real life. Too bad we don't have an ignore list there. :P

And because they said so.

I shall continue the long chain of quotes ;)

I respect and understand your opinion, but I realize I should have put "some" when I was describing certain things originally.

Having brains does me a lot of good but maybe not to another person, I can accept that, but its my opinion, its how I live :)

Everyone takes chances and lives for the day, but life shouldn't only consist of pleasures, one's gotta put hard work into it too. Balance :)

Learning is fun, studying is not :XD:

Dedication to RS is easy on a small level, difficult on a really high level. One does not get 99 in any skill without a massive amount of dedication, even for the least of all skills. It all depends on what one considers "dedication" to be. If dedication to you is only getting level 40 in a skill, then there would be the difference in our opinions.

Plus, you're not being cynical, you're just providing valuable insight into the flaws of my posts. No one is perfect you know.

Forgot to add that I consider intelligence and the ability to govern time effectively to be very controversial, I for one have extreme trouble trying to put aside time for doing Calculus HW... Can't stand it lol :-w

IMO People say Runescape is for nerds because for 2 main reasons:

1. Graphics: Ok it aint high class graphics but it aint low class neither. I personally dont bother about the graphics (even though their improving) but focus on the gameplay instead.

2. Training: Runescape, unlike other games; such as MapleStory, dosent have a "party" or "training ground" feature which allows players to join a team of strong guys and afk there for 1 day to raise their levels significantly. High levels in Runescape got to there by themselves and not some team help.

People who call Runescapians nerds r lazy people who got high lvl accounts in their respective games by afking. That makes me sick.
