Putting it frankly-

 

The Runescape censor sucks.

 

 

 

Now before this turns into a Rant, let me explain why it sucks.

 

 

 

Runescape is intended for 13 year olds and above. Players and Jagex (and don't give me that they love the little kiddies for the money crap, they're breaking the rules) don't want children under the age of 13 who are not mature yet playing the game. The 13+ ruel is their for a reason.

 

 

 

I'm not saying that all kids under 13 aren't mature, hey I started playing when i was under 13, but the majority aren't mature.

 

 

 

But because of all these young kid, the Runescape censor has gotten way out of hand. Let's explore this scenario-

 

You are walking down the street one day to go and buy some milk. As you walk, you pass a man and hear him mutter "Damn gum" as he steps in someones chewing gum. You disregard and continue on your way. You then pass by a lady walking to her car. She drops a coin down a drain and says quietly to herself "Aww that sucks". Once again you disregard it till you get it and get to the shop. You grab your milk and as you walk out you see a young boy spit out a lollie and say "Yuck, that's crap".

 

 

 

Now, you are over the age of 13. Would you have been offended by any of the above situations? If you were, gtfo.

 

 

 

Now I understand that there is need for certain words to be censored which are offensive, but seriously, this has gotten WAY out of hand. With all these updates to combat RWT, can't Jagex spend a little time tweaking the censor? I can't count how many times I've been censored ad maybe even reported, for mispelling a word or saying "Man you died? That ***".

excellent point. sadly, as long as younger people who are less mature continue to play, jagex has to have this to keep gaining more members nad more cash. sad reality, but we must learn to live with it. :evil:

That's why it's such a travesty. Jagex really takes out the time to find EVERY SINGLE WAY something can be written as a curse or innuendo. Yet, they can put in examines like "I better stay away from those dwarven balls" or the once popular "she's kicking HAM ***" (they changed it).

 

 

 

Jagex really needs to grow up with the censors. I'm not saying to let everything through, but stop censoring minor profanity.

No...unfortunately, the user base on RuneScape in general is MUCH less mature (either that, or much more stubborn) than the user base on TIF, and letting up on the censor might not be the best idea.

Suck is sensored as immature kiddies use RS for cybersex.

*sniff sniff* For some reason I think this thread has the potential to turn into a soft rant about the RS community. Just a shot in the dark. :o

oh please, their much less harsh things in this world that have been censored then what you have... in fact, in my "area" the bible belt we used to have book burnings and such. im not sure if you are aware of that. i dont know the extent of the censorship from the church goin folks but it was clearly too much.

 

 

 

 

 

but anyway, to tell people to get the [bleep] out is over the top. some children are sheltered ALOT, and to expect them to bend to the world all that sudden in a manor of how you speak is absurd. telling someone something like that is almost like a threat to their religion or culture.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

however i do agree that the censor is what it is. and i wish it was not their what so eve.

I have never met anyone over the age of 13 who is offended by any swear word(not said at them). While runescape shouldn't let you say every word, damn, crap, and suck should at LEAST be allowed.

the reason that you have to be 13 is not because its Jagex policy, but because the us (and possibly other countries) have passed a law that if your under 13, you cant use certain sites w/o supervision. Its mean to stop predators on the net, and Jagex is just covering their legal backsides with this.

I don't see why they don't just make it optional to have the word filter. We're supposed to be teenagers or older, make it so that us older people aren't cluttered with this annoying star spam just because some little kiddies "need protection from the big scary words".

 

 

 

I think one of the biggest flaws of this game is the filter. And half the time it filters the wrong things. I'm sick of this.

actually there is no 13+ to play rule. people of any age can play. it's required on ALL online games/ sites/ etc., for people to be 13+ to sign up by themselves by law as the government(s) have decided kids are not responsible enough to be on the internet by themselves. it's simply there for their protection, not to keep them out.

 

 

 

so, once again, you cannot complain about kids playing a game for all ages. they have just as much a right to be here as you do. yes i realize a lot of kids are immature, but then again you were too. just because you didn't play when you were young doesn't mean they shouldn't too. :shame:

I don't swear, but the censor still is a little crazy. Dork is censored, and I don't think it's even offensive if you know what it truly means. Suck is censored, and yeah, cyber, but this isn't the best game for cyber because you have to do the tutorial. Since people who come for that probably came off of Miniclips, they should have gone for Club Penguin since there's no tutorial and there are some pretty messed up little kids on there.

 

 

 

Although there is no way around "suck", suxz works for sucks. Not suggesting you use it, just a tip :

There's one good solution for all this: Lose the goddamn "badness" of the words. Seriously, they;re words. Strings of letters forming comprehensive syllables. Only offensive because we amde them offensive, we should be able to take the offensiveness out. Well, you would think anyways...

I totally agree, I made a Debate topic in the Debate forum about this, but I got flamed a lot (50% were pms) cause they thought I wanted to be able to cuss my head off

Wow that's an interesting idea. Imagine, back when half these words weren't offensive if we found ifferent words to be offensive, bad could be censored right now. :shock:

I'll try and count how many times I see "ugh, stupid censor" every day.

And all or part of some people's names are censored.

 

 

 

I don't know that many people who would disagree that the censor needs a change.

I agree that a lot of it needs to be worked on, but some kids are different, and you can't just make a blanket statement that says what is acceptable for kids and what isn't. Kids are raised very differently.
