Music genres you Can't stand?[flame war=ban]

Featured Replies

A lot of the bashing is of the bandwagon variety, people just hate on it because everyone else does. Now that doesn't mean its not justified, since the majority of rap fits the general stereotype people pit against it. There is some good rap, but trying to defend the entire genre using just a few honorable artists is a losing battle.

If that's your excuse then every [bleep] genre sucks. Most metal sucks. Most rock sucks. A lot of music does suck.

I have to agree with Poopingman. A lot of the genre bashing does seem like people jumping on the bandwagon so they don't end up on the side that gets bashed at every turn. And I have to say a lot of music does suck these days. All these bands releasing new albums always seem to be a big let down for me. I guess I expected bands that were good to continue with their style, not take up whatever is popular.

On topic: There's not really any genres I don't like. Some genres I only like a band or two but others have a large selection of good artists.

Any kind of rap or hip hop

Country

Most dance/pop music

If there is one genre I absolutely cannot stand, it is the "minority genres" of R&B, Hip Hop, and Gangsta Rap (including thier relatives.) I have specifically outlined reasons.

1. They frequently idolize violent behavior and the use of degrading language.

2. The "music" they compose requires next to no talent to create, and follows the weak "if it's loud, then it's music" mindset.

3. None of thier compositions follow the rules of musical theory.

4. The noise lacks the quaility or depth of high level composers (Beethoven, Bach, etc)

5. It outlines the worst social philosophy in the world; "The only way to bring yourself up is by pulling others down."

As far as I am concerned, any teacher who considers this junk music should be fired, no matter how many degrees they have.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who thinks music teachers should be fired for considering rap to be music is just an elitist bastard.

That's exactly what you're doing here. Hypocricy much?

Somebody didn't read this thread...Ah well, all your points are wrong:

1.) They frequently idolize violent behavior and the use of degrading language.

Violence is a topic in hip-hop and rap, but it is in every other genre as well. Hell, violence is a part of global culture. If it's bad for hip-hop to rap about violence, then what about rock? Metal? Movies? Television? Video games? To bash hip-hop for violence, wether it be promoting it or simply reciting it, but to leave out all other forms of entertainment, is just ignornace.

And swearing, it gives a stronger image of the emotion the writer is trying to convery. What are you gonna take more seriously:

I don't give a damn!

I don't give a darn!

Go to hell!

Go to heck!

And once again, swearing is not just hip-hop, just about every other genre, and other means of entertainment, have swearing. Generic arguments against hip-hop are fail, buddy.

2. The "music" they compose requires next to no talent to create, and follows the weak "if it's loud, then it's music" mindset.

You're kidding, right? I would love to see you create a beat that would meet Dr. Dre or DJ Premier's level. Or write some lyrics that would meet Nas' level of lyricism.

To compose a beat requires a unique talent, and knowledge in ALL forms of instruments. On top of that, you have to be able to sucessfully sample from a different song to provide uniqueness from other beats (great examples are the "Touch the Sky" and "Good Life" beats, both composed Kanye West, successfully sample songs "Move on Up, by Curtis Mayfield", and "PYT, by Michael Jackson," respectivly).

To write lyrics to it is just as difficult. Your lyrics must match the flow and tone of the beat, and on top of that, rhyme. Once that's down, there's so many things you do: tell a story, convey a moral, deliver a message to the listener, everything else you convey through other genres of music.

Kanye West rapping about the war in Sierra Leone takes no talent?

Nas rapping about the passing of his mother takes no talent?

Talib Kweli rapping about the birth of his child, and the joy it brought him, takes no talent?

Common personifying hip-hop as a women, and telling her story, takes no talent?

Eminem telling a fictiona story where he takes the place as one of his disgruntled fans who is about to be a father takes no talent?

Bear in mind these rappers did make all of those songs, with flows that matched the beat, tones that matched the beat, and it all rhymed.

Your ignorance to the effort that goes into making hip-hop songs shows your level of unintelligence regarding this topic.

3. None of thier compositions follow the rules of musical theory.

Do you even know what musical theory IS? I took a one year class on musical theory, and by the looks of things, hip-hop and rap songs have:

-Melody

-Rhythm

-Form

-Pitch

-Dynamics

-Texture

-Harmony

-Consonance/dissonance

-Dynamics

Hell, every song has these. Therefore, hip-hop not only follows musical theory, but personifies, because in a hip-hop song, figuring out the melody, pitch, form, and especially rhythm is incredibly easy and obvious.

4. The noise lacks the quaility or depth of high level composers (Beethoven, Bach, etc)

Just an all-around ignorant comment. Hip-hop's composers, such as Just Blaze, DJ Premier, Dr. Dre, and Kanye west, all have plethoras of beats that swell in quality and depth. Hell, Beethoven's "Für Elise" has even been SAMPLED in hip-hop songs, such as Nas' song, I Can, where he tells stories of African history, and warns young children to avoid drugs, material splurging, and raises the moral of the youth:

5. It outlines the worst social philosophy in the world; "The only way to bring yourself up is by pulling others down." '

Your post practiced this very philosophy.

And this couldn't be more wrong. Hip-hop supports and personifies hope, unity, and community spirit, and these were some of the foundations when hip-hop was founded in the '70s. Hip-hop has supported the world banding together to make the world a better place. But hip-hop's message would never truly get conveyed throughout the world, due to people ingorant to the genre, and have their own uninformed opinions that they generalize over litterally thousands of songs. Much like what you're doing, actually.

Hip-hop over the last 30 years, has changed, a lot. It's been commercialized and corporately raped to hell and back, but it can still be a beautiful genre. More people just need to give it a chance. That doesn't mean try hip-hop on the radio, or watch Sucker Free on MTV, I mean, really, truely give it a chance.

....Why hasn't this topic been locked yet again? It's just people talking about how they hate other genres, and such topics have been locked before...

This thread has made me lose alot of potential respect for the majority of the members of this board.

That said, Choco, I love you. It's a pity your words will probably go ignored.

Cool.

They always do in threads like this. Next time there'll be a thread like/similar to this, it'll be the same thing. -.-

Rap,Hip-hop etc.I mean how is calling a girl a b---h or a w---e romantic in anyway?

Rap is an aquired taste. Once you find some of the really good stuff, it's absolutely hilareous and awesome. Listen to (in my opinion) the best rapper out there: MF Doom. He's just ridiculous...i mean, given, some of the mainstream stuff (i.e. Soulja Boy) is just awful...but that comes with every genre. Of course, most of mainstream rap is crap so that's a little different...but anyway. To the people who are getting down on rap for sending out bad messages and being terrible...that's just wrong. You can't say that because Jefferson Starship was a terrible band for the most part, rock sucks. Or if you hate Europe or something, then saying that the 80s was a terrible decade for music. You can't classify a genre just by a few artists, or even by the mainstream and majority. Sure, some rap talks about sex and women in a deragory way, but i mean...you can't get down on them for that. Just look at a song by one of the greatest Rock bands ever to grace the face of the earth: The rolling stones. Don't tell me that the song "Start me up" doesn't make grotesque sexual references when you hear the lyrics "You make a grown man cry, you make a dead man [bleep]"...seriously? Rap can be terrific, just give it a little respect.

I cannot stand scream and most post-punk rock (your mainstream bands), and also those sell out bands that i can't classify (i.e. Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana, etc)

Sadly, yeah.

I don't know where all of the rap hate comes from really. But, then again, I guess it's easier to fall in love with mainstream rock then it is mainstream rap. Some people really do think those 2 chords or w/e that the guitarists are playing is soo talented.

I just wish that more people could be exposed to better music, but probably will never happen.

"He could climb to it, if he climbed alone, and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder."

I think we should blame the majority of rappers for creating the whole hate thing against rap, because ffs their songs are like yo yo yo i got shot so many times ooh my baby loves me, ooh baby she so fine, yo yo yo my ghetto is so wack.

I've listened to a couple of good rap songs, but really, it's just computer generated music, it's not like real people with a talent playing an instrument like guitar or something, unless you count a DJ board.

[bleep], I mean it's not like Musical composition is a talent or anything.

All right then, try and construct a musical composition of your own to rival Handel's Water Music Suite (in all keys!).

It's FAR from the majority of rappers. It's a very tiny niche that just have the same subject matter, and that's just the 50 Cent stereotype that people like to throw all rappers into, like you just did.

Plenty of producers make beats with their own guitar or drum skills. Look at the Dr. Dre, Mike Elanzo, Scott Storch, Kanye West (though sampling is where he really shines) they all create a good amount of their beats with actual instruments. Dre's drumming is some of the best I've ever heard.

You have got to be kidding me...

Uhhh, no. You heard 2001? :|

He's much more simplistic than people who drum for bands, but I still like him.

metalcore.

the stuff makes me want to scream "TUNE YOUR [bleep]ING GUITAR YOU EMO [puncture]!" whenever i hear it.

the riffs are primitive, the bass is almost always terrible, and half the time the entire song will finish without a single propper riffing session.

not to mention the terrible lyrics, try hard delivery, god-awful fashion...

the worst of it is, most uneducated people seem to define metalcore as standard heavy metal, which it isn't, so i go to great lengths every time someone says otherwise to show them that it isn't even definable as a type of metal.

the only saving grace is that some of the bands have decent drummers...

but then again some of them like to pretend to be thrash metal, perpetuating the above problem.

Rap. I tried teaching myself to like it for about a year, and didn't succeed. Everything else I haven't got a problem with.

I'd rather listen to a good rap beat than a dream theater composition.

Its not that i can't stand it but i really don't understand how people can call the really hardcore music where the singer just screams down the microphone "music".

100% Agree, i'm sick of crappy rappers like 50 cent or lil wayne giving true rappers like 2Pac or Xzibit a bad name.

Dream Theater's good... Under a Glass Moon. Just listen to it.

And I agree with Agunimon and Mlbfan13. 2Pac's a legend...but 50 Cent's ruining that legend.

Any sub-genre of metal beyond some heavy and doom metal. Emo/Screamo and the Jonas Brothers-esque ilk as well.

I would also say rap, but there are a few songs that I could stand to listen to, and some that I actually like. Like "No Handlebars" . But I've never really tried listening to rap beyond what I hear on the radio or around others.
