January 26, 201313 yr For physics and the advanced maths we were given handouts when we walked in with the formulas on them. The teacher (it was the same one for physics and two of the maths) felt it was more important that we understood how and when they were used than memorizing them. January 26, 201313 yr Does everybody get a W-2? I heard they were giving them out at work yesterday but I only got my paycheck. Then again, I only worked for two months...so maybe I haven't made enough money yet. It's not monetary quantity, it's about longevity of employment. January 26, 201313 yr The American high school and university application process seems incredibly stressful. I have a hard enough time here, I'd probably have a mental breakdown if I had to go through all that. On a similar note, I've been studying hard for my Physics exam Tuesday. We're allowed to bring in a double sided index card with formulas, and there's only one theory question, so all I really need to memorize is the process for some of the more complex problems. It's insanely stressful. Three months banishment to 9gag is something i would never wish upon anybody, not even my worst enemy.
January 26, 201313 yr In statistics we are permitted to create our own 'cheat sheets' to bring into examinations with us. They restrict size (you get one sheet of paper, and it must be done by hand), but not the material. Also one of very few courses that allow you to bring any calculator s) you wish, provided that programmable ones are wiped at the beginning of an exam (so that you don't bring your whole text book with you). It's a lot more reasonable than having you focus on memorizing all the formulas, but I can't help but feel it's instead turning it into at least a partial test of your preparation skills rather than your stats skills. The way I see it, once your in the real world, the important things are knowing what can be done (like what are all the statistical tests and models you can run, and which ones apply in which cases), and knowing when you don't know what your doing. As my Mom once put it to me, if she doesn't know a specific procedure or policy at her job, she has giant binders full of every last one that will ever apply to her, and she can simply look them up. Big burly men don't come into her office and go "sorry mam, but you have to remember it from memory. Looking things up is cheating". Likewise, if one day I forgot how to do a regression analysis, I'd probably just look it up to jog my memory rather than sweating at my desk for 2 hours trying to remember that specific lecture. We always look back into our history and laugh at all the crazy things they used to do and believe in. I think our legacy of crazy will be our education system.
January 27, 201313 yr So I came back from my psychologist and turns outs I'm going to be put an anti depressants. It's rather funny since I couldn't have foreseen this in a million years a year ago. My how life changes. Three months banishment to 9gag is something i would never wish upon anybody, not even my worst enemy.
January 27, 201313 yr Got my W-2 today too. But my paycheck was mysteriously absent. Either way, I'm more upset about being taxed for a random $640 the government is claiming it granted me last year for unemployment, which I did file for, but was rejected actual funding. So they gotta get their shit straight. I'm not getting screwed this next tax season like last year. When you file, doesn't it allow you to dispute (not sure of the right word to use... I skipped over it since it didn't apply to me) things on last year's? If you're doing TurboTax or something, I think it gives you options to make adjustments for the previous year. Also, that's kind of BS! I hope you get everything sorted out with it. Does everybody get a W-2? I heard they were giving them out at work yesterday but I only got my paycheck. Then again, I only worked for two months...so maybe I haven't made enough money yet.Yes: if you made any income, you should get a W-2. It may vary from state-to-state and business-to-business, but it's possible that they are sent out based on your Social Security Number. Or it may depend on your zipcode. One of my coworkers got hers 2-3 days before I got mine.

January 27, 201313 yr Guess I'm not as invincible as I thought I was. Was doing a fair amount of drinking at my cousin's 18th party last night, and today I've developed a headache after coming home, started mid afternoon, it's now 8pm. I. So hate autobidders on ebay. I'm trying to bid on a replacement film camera, but the prick (a classic "I'll buy collector items to flip for a quick buck") keeps bidding $1 on top of me. so now I'm waiting until last minute in 5 days and bidding. I want a replacement Pentax K1000 for mine since mine is starting to play up and it'd be cheaper to get that then refurbish. Otherwise I'm looking at paying ~$200 for a 100% refurbished one. god damn you society. ;__; EDIT: And I've sent a email to the guys I bought my GPU off, and EVGA. since day one it's been a pain in the arse, and it's now getting so bad, that one stupid GPU is killing off my PC, overheating everything and whatnot. The dreaded... GTX480. So I'm seeing if I'm covered by warranty. It's a feature eBay has had for a while, it allows you to select a maximum price and will keep making the minimum bid up when someone bids higher than you. Just sell it and get an AMD GFX card. January 27, 201313 yr Hmm, alright. I'll ask tomorrow. See, this is the stuff they need to teach in high school. Taxation, financial systems, court processes, etc. W-2The Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, is used to report wages paid to employees and the taxes withheld from them. Employers must complete a Form W-2 for each employee to whom they pay a salary, wage, or other compensation as part of the employment relationship. An employer must mail out the Form W-2 to employees on or before January 31. This deadline gives these taxpayers about 2 months to prepare their returns before the April 15 income tax due date. The form is also used to report FICA taxes to the Social Security Administration. The Form W-2, along with Form W-3, generally must be filed by the employer with the Social Security Administration by the end of February. Relevant amounts on Form W-2 are reported by the Social Security Administration to the Internal Revenue Service. In territories, the W-2 is issued with a two letter code indicating which territory, such as W-2GU for Guam. If corrections are made, it can be done on a W-2c. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRS_tax_forms#W-2 :) And yeah... my high school taught me (as far as the "real" world/work force) how to make a generic resume, and that was it.
January 27, 201313 yr Currently drinking an ice cold beer that's been chilling in my winter-bound car for a week. Excellent little mobile fridge that thing becomes. Which is about all it's good for, because it's dead in the water at my work right now. Tried jumping it, but it's been giving me crap all month. I'm pronouncing it officially dead. Even though it likely only needs a new battery, starter, and ignition. ~$200. I'd almost rather just buy a new car though. I have the money to do so, and I'm so tired of my car's BS. Tiberius has seen better days. In other news, it's 530am, and I just got home from work. Nothing like a 16 hour saturday to put you in the mood to discover your car is dead in the middle of winter. At least I have beer. Quote Quote Anyone who likes tacos is incapable of logic. Anyone who likes logic is incapable of tacos. January 27, 201313 yr Today I was on the screening of Jeopardy. I won't say how I did here in public, since I don't know if it can get me in some sort of trouble, PM me if you wanna hear more. I was quite probably the youngest participant ever on the Estonian Jeopardy and well, some interesting stuff happened. So I've noticed this thread's regulars all follow similar trends. January 27, 201313 yr 18th birthday is magical. You get to do everything then in Estonia, including drink. In Belgium one can drink at a younger age, methinks, but still. Anyways, today I went to a qualification for Estonian Jeopardy. And got invited to a taping already tomorrow. Sooo pretty nice for a high school student, eh?The drinking age for beers and wines is 16, but for stronger drinks it's 18. But now I can finally take my driving exam (which has been scheduled for tomorrow since November), vote and legally carry small amounts of weed with me (well, not 100% legal, but the police won't punish me, nor are they allowed to take it from me).
January 27, 201313 yr I would think running an AC to defog your windows in Australia would be sort of insufferable. Not hot enough already? One of my parents vehicles forces you to use AC mode in full defrost (your allowed to not do that if you split for feet and defrost). Yes, it's very fast, but it's also very hot, and can quickly turn the cabin into an oven while drying your eyes out, so you end up running it for only a few seconds. I like options. I also prefer being able to select the air temperature over ambient temperature control. Ambient control is a lot more awesome when you can't feel the air hitting you (or ideal for everyone except the driver).
January 27, 201313 yr Um...shouldn't AC mode turn on the Air Conditioning which would then blow cold air instead of hot? :-s Check out my blog to read the Adventures of a Big Damn (F2P) Hero. January 27, 201313 yr Um...shouldn't AC mode turn on the Air Conditioning which would then blow cold air instead of hot? :-sAnd when do your windows fog when it's hot out? "The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is."
January 28, 201313 yr Um...shouldn't AC mode turn on the Air Conditioning which would then blow cold air instead of hot? :-sNot at all. In reverse, you end up with all the waste heat the AC dissipates into the world under normal operation. In areas where it doesn't get to cold (I think around here is warm enough most of the year), they make better heating units than actual electric heaters because of their efficiency They work with heat that already exists rather than spend energy creating more, so as long as there is enough heat to work with (I think down to around -15C if you like your house at room temperature) they are effective and efficient If it get's colder than that, you probably want a backup system to help out. A bit more useful in the northern states than in Canada I think. Side note, a dehumidifier is an AC unit that dumps it's waste heat back into the exhaust air, with only a small net temperature rise (the heat generated by the pump itself).
January 28, 201313 yr I don't normally go snowboarding on the weekends because of the crowds, but I made an exception today to play in the fresh powder.
January 28, 201313 yr My very first day of placement today. I'm so excited I didn't get a single minute's sleep last night. It's 4:45am and my shift starts at 7:00am and runs through 'til 3:00pm. So by the time I come off my shift I'll be awake 30 hours on the bounce. I am so [bleep]ed it's not even funny. I'm just hoping a combination of being on my feet all day and adrenaline will see me through this. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
January 28, 201313 yr Spent most of my day playing CoD BO1, had a lot of fun on Urban Dictionary too. It's the first time i've actually been on there. I searched my name and had such a big laugh about it. It was fun.I still suck at CoD. I can't seem to get a good key layout. I try to dropshot but i end up doing something completely different. My KDR sucks, but it's super fun anyway :DAlso tomorrow i start really studying for my upcoming exams. Gonna be fun.
January 28, 201313 yr Hate this rain, tanks are overflowing so the smell of sewage will be in the air outside, and if my internet was shown on television as a bright light while connected, and black when it's not, its seizure-giving powers would rival that one pokemon episode. Friend called me up yesterday and asked me if I wanted to go to Supernova (basically Comic-Con for Aussies.) Looking forward to it, but he wants me to go as one of the tailed beasts from Naruto. I didn't really get far through the anime, so I have to think of something else to go as. Um...shouldn't AC mode turn on the Air Conditioning which would then blow cold air instead of hot? :-sAnd when do your windows fog when it's hot out?Windows down, and stop what you're doing and go to a river where the water is cool. Everyone goes to the beaches but the water is too shallow for it to remain cool on hot days. Not to mention you can jump into the water.
