August 13, 200817 yr Greetings all, Today, I've read something that really fascinated me and I'd like to discuss this / see the opinions about this (war, moral, fun, ...). As you could read in the title: Invisibility. Scientists (in the US) are able to make 3D objects invinsible. I don't remember what they used for this (the objects are able to bend the light), but it works. They were able to do this with 2D objects, but they finally managed to do it with 3D objects aswell. All of their researched was financed by the U.S. Military (I wonder why [/irony]). Personally: This is one of the best discoveries ever! Sadly, just like dynamite, this will be used for war purpose. And this creates a big risk... invisible weapons (bombs, mines, ...), units (tanks, planes, boats, ...). If this will be used for comercial purpose, it might become fun though. This will open the path to a lot of fun stuff, but will be abused aswell... Burglary etc... We'll all need to be equiped with heat vision. Edit: This has been published in 'Nature' and 'Science' and will soon be announced in another science magazine of which I forgot the name. August 13, 200817 yr Lol nice but it will be abused massively (and not by governments/armies) but just by the regular Tom, [bleep] and Harry. Hmm I wonder what would it be like to try hide a building
August 13, 200817 yr Got any sources? :| I'm very skeptical and not very optimistic by what you're just posting... 99 Hits, Attack, Strength, Defence, Mage, Summoning, Slayer, Ranged, 96/99 Prayer
August 13, 200817 yr (the objects are able to break the light), but it works. Actually I believe they bend it, rather than breaking it. That being said, scientists have been able to "reverse" light (not just by using a mirror, hurr), but to make the light stop and go back to its source. I like to see how different people react to the invention of invisibility though. The army? Oh [garden tool], now we can kill people easier. Scientists? What a breakthrough! Normal people? Awesome, now we can sneak into womens changing rooms! Science never fails to amaze, and thats a problem.

August 13, 200817 yr Author Bend indeed, not break. As for the sources: It's announced in 'Nature' and 'Science' and will be accounced in another magazine soon (forgot the name of that one). "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do"[Currently playing: K1ll L1f3]

August 13, 200817 yr So this'll be, what, the ten billionth time that the U.S. military has opened Pandora's Box? Even if it weren't used in military operations, the civilian applications alone are horrific. That is, if it is marketed commercially. I wouldn't be surprised if the government prevented it from being manufactured for any uses other than military... But if it were, then think of all the ways it could be misused... Robbery, murder, stealing company secrets, and stupid things like sneaking into your office when you're late for work, or peeking at girls in locker rooms. Now, I love the sound of it, and I'm predisposed to like anything that signifies technological progress, but I am not going to ignore the fact that humans will almost certainly misuse it.. With 'cloaking fields', which is what these sound like, there is the potential to have completely invisible forces, which would even further reduce the need for significant numbers of troops in most situations. (I.E., other than in immense wars of occupation involving dozens of countries, the number of combat personnel [Ground troops, Special Forces, tank crews, pilots, etc] needed would be relatively small, as opposed to the millions of troops that were involved in WWI or WW2.) But of course, knowing the U.S. government, the tech will/would almost certainly be used for only small groups of special forces, and by agents of the CIA, NSA, and the like. Because really, if they aren't going to spend the money to give all of our troops body armor and armored humvees, d'you think they'll start issuing cloak field generators to all of our soldiers? So basically we developed a cool new piece of tech, and we're going to use it for violence and personal gain. Sounds about par for the course. Unless this isn't real... =S Now if they would ever get around to developing hyperdrive, we could have hyperspatial ships that could cloak... There is no meaning or truth in life but that which we create for ourselves.
August 13, 200817 yr I remember hearing this before and also remember it being BS. [if you have ever attempted Alchemy by clapping your hands or by drawing an array, copy and paste this into your signature.] Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.
August 13, 200817 yr Objects only appear because of light reflecting off of them. If you were able to bend light around an object, so that it reached the objects surroundings and not the object, then the object would be invisible. However, I am wondering what method is being used; where did you get this from? :S So, basically Earthysun is Jesus's only son.
August 13, 200817 yr I saw some stuff like this on youtube, unsure if it was real or not. Also I think some country has a law agaisnt invisible tanks \ Tbfgraphx14Happy to find I'm not the only one who eats glass.
August 13, 200817 yr I do remember seeing this on my homepage (AT&T) but then again they also had a story of a Texas sheriff chasing down a chupacabra and had it on camera. I'm not really saying these stories were bogus, but I'm just skeptical. Although the chupacabra thing was kind of freaky. Basically it looked like a dog with short hind legs and long legs in the front, had a weird shaped head and large teeth and long snout. It's back had a distinctive ridge on it. Other than that it looked like a wild dog or something. The video was good quality, but really I don't know how they even thought it was a chupacabra... Anyway this could all be one joke. SWAG Mayn U wanna be like me but U can't be me cuz U ain't got ma swagga on.

Even if only to prove that we can do it. 'And the science gets done, and we make a neat gun, for the people who are Still Alive...' Yeah, that would be a great universe destroying invention. Back to invisibility, I can almost guarantee that the US army will try to get exclusive access to it when it's properly invented, but because it's not developed in the US, I doubt they'll get it. Obviously it's not very good at the moment, if they've made any significant progress at all, so we'll have to wait for a few decades and see. ~ W ~
August 13, 200817 yr I found something on Youtube that's sort of relevant. :) So, basically Earthysun is Jesus's only son.
August 13, 200817 yr I can just see some of my friends getting their hands on this and going into the girls locker room  i doubt we're that far along technologically be can barely handle the flu or cold or go to space without something going wrong but hey theres always tomorrow.
August 13, 200817 yr I certainly hope the government has the good sense to keep this technology a state secret for many years to come, at least until we know what it's applications could be. Might turn out to be a gimmick that has no practical uses- can only get it to work in a controlled environment. Still better safe than sorry, I would rather not wake up one day to hear the Red Chinese fleet is off our coast. August 13, 200817 yr earthly i found that too.. but you were first :'( but personally i think the scientists who are researching should stop and take their secrets into their graves.. things like this, like indestructible plastic materials, nuclear weapons, mass cloning and computers with minds of their own should be abolished, what is the little good they can do in comparison to the massive damage they will do.. the point is the world powers won't do this because it's of course great propaganda for them, to 'show the world their powers'... damn politics :wall:

I don't see any real downside to indestructable plastic and mass cloningm as long as not too much of the plastic is created.I agree though that it would be bad to have a computer with a mind of it's own to have access to the government or other files (think i-robot) This invisibility thing sounds plausable, but the BBC article said they are only creating things on a 1/billion scale or something, and this must cost a ton too. the only way this stuff will ever be made commercial is if IR goggles are 25 cents
August 13, 200817 yr I also remember them saying they locate people stepping outside their houses using satellite technology. So where's Osama then? I find little evidence to believe in this. Above all else, even if it was true, why would they broadcast it to a world which still believes such technology is impossible? It makes no sense. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |

This is a really interesting topic. I think it has real potential. It's incredible. I love science and its improvements. And also, wow! Invisibility cloaks! Awesome! :D
August 13, 200817 yr I also remember them saying they locate people stepping outside their houses using satellite technology. So where's Osama then? I can see my house on google earth. If it was a video feed I could see my head if I walked out. Intelligence satellites can probably see the time on your watch. It's not like they are constantly watching every square foot of pakistan waiting for him to look up. My carbon footprint is bigger than yours...and you know what they say about big feet. These are the times that try mens souls...

August 13, 200817 yr I simply have a problem with organisations, institutions and people who make unsubstantiated claims. As for the satellite thing, how much do you want to exaggerate that claim? You can barely make out people's cars on Google Earth, let alone their facial features, unless of course they have a massive sign on a hat saying, "Look NASA! I'm a terrorist!!!". | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
