Parents and runescape.

Featured Replies

My parents never said anything and I would have been slightly annoyed if they did. If I spent less time on a computer than I did I probably wouldn't be as interested in Computers as I am and would have hindered me long term as for a long time I've wanted a career in computers.

Runescape teaches several things, has puzzles to solve and many more things, a lot of parents do not understand video games at all which annoys me. Being ignorant about it and only going by things in the press about it being "bad" is just silly. As long as it's not effecting your life in a bad way they shouldn't limit your time using it if you choose to do it as a hobby, no different than watching TV.

mine used to not care but when i seriously do nolife they notice and say runescape is a waste of time blahblahblah

they never took it away or anything though but i do play less when they start getting annoyed

i try to keep gpa 3.0+ cause thier is no excuse for a low gpa

but i do feel i need to put tons of time into my rs character because i want all level 99s so if i was limited to only weekends id be severely crushed and probably quit runescape

and yah about tv most parents including mine dont see it as a problem because usually your not as invested into tv as you would be in a game. a game 3hrs can make you want to play more and more but generally you can leave the television or record a program w/o it ruining your plans too much.

at a certain level of character your rs character becomes more than a waste of time to you thats why we have forums like blogscape and rate this so people can show what they did all these hours and be satisfied

I'm like Forsakenmage, Parents don't care aslong as I do my chores first. Also as long as I satisfy their little favors >.< (go to the Market and buy a gallon of water, etc....) They are fine with it.

Wongton is better than me in anyway~~

I'm 20 so theres nothing they can do about it, tbh even if they did say sumthing I'd still do it anyway, its only a game...

I've worked since I was 15 been to College, had a gf for 2.5 years, play football at the weekend so its not like it takes over my life...

I think for most parents aslong as you demonstrate a balance in what you do with your life, they can't complain...

Avid43.png

my mom hates it but since I have straight A's she can't seriously complain

whenever I mess up it is without a doubt because I play rs though... "CARL YOU FORGOT TO TAKE OUT THE TRASH!? MY GOD YOU ARE OBSESSED WITH THAT GAME!" - really lol

They don't care, well didn't, I switched to a different mmorpg and they only moan about costs, which is fair enough. Besides, I wouldn't stop for them. They had their chance at fun, my turn nao. >.>

I have no intrest in helping "keyers" farm xp.

I play runescape far too much and I am a parent of 3 kids (15,10 and 7). I would just make a few points here:-

1. Runescape does not teach you anything about life in general. In fact I think it gives people a poor impression as to how people are in real life.

2. Runescape does teach some useful skills. However these skills would be better learnt in a more beneficial way ie an English lesson or a typewriting course etc.

3. I would much rather my kids played outside with mates and do some real interaction.

4. I do not mind them playing the computer or playstation etc but it must come after schoolwork and chores.

5. I know how to disable my computer should they not follow any rules I impose.(Removing the ethernet connection is my favourite).

6. Playing games will not give you an interest in computing as a career. Studying computing at school with an enthusiatic teacher might.

7. Mobile phones are worse than home computers. This is what most parents miss.

8. No one on this site has ever done better at school by playing runescape but many appear to have done considerably worse.

9. The original poster got his wish. No one flamed his parents. This happened because the people that responded have good manners and probably parents that also care and not because they learnt lessons from Runescape.

(The way to get round all parents is easy. Give them something they want and they will return the favour. Well it works better on the Mother than the Father.

My parents don't mind I play RuneScape but they do mind how often I play.

I can play whatever I want but I can't play it too long at a time.

But that's only good for me I guess.

They don't have a say anymore, as I moved out ::' They didn't mind too much when I lived at home either though, as long as I got schoolwork, chores etc. done.

My parents think that anything that does not involve Word, Publisher, or Excel is a waste of time most of the time. So in general, they think RS is a definite waste of time, which to me it is... I have not played in about two weeks, I play off and on. However I play a lot less now due to the new graphics which take longer to load, and also I cannot play HD on this computer. I mean, there are times when the computer's not a waste of time (searching for info for a report, looking at Christmas/birthday presents... but that's stretching it. :D )

Parents and Runescape certainly don't go well together. I'm usually given a list of jobs if either of my parents see me playing on the computer.

Also the idea that Runescape is in any way educational is quite ridiculous. Its a poor reason to justify playing.

This.

My parents think games are an utter waste of time, and that I shouldn't play them at all. Instead I should do educational things like learning how to build websites and make programs on the computer instead.

Yeah, like I feel like learning more stuff after I've finished my homework and studied. I just want to relax.

But no, games are evil. Anything, but not games. So I just stopped telling them what I was doing upstairs. I guess they now think I'm hosting some criminal pr0n organization or something, but idc

2dvjurb.png

my parents are like the anti-runescape people. they don't really like me playing the game at all cause they say it's to addicting and my results suffer at it.

but i just keep playing on

vsigcopyhj0.png

they know i play and sometimes they say:

he's playing that stupid game #-o

but i dont care lol

If I ever do anything badly at school, RS takes the blame and I'm banned for two weeks or a month. Mysteriously they never ban me from TV. If something really important like revision comes up then they won't renew my membership, which is pretty much a ban but not so sudden.

On the flip side, getting a great big wad of A's and A*'s in my GCSEs has practically given me immunity from bans at the moment.

When it comes to punishments, my parents always attack RS as the sole cause.

However, Runescape should never be considered as 'educational'. School is 'educational'. Courses are 'educational'. Runescape is not 'educational'.

The only thing I have ever learned from RS is how to type quickly, but probably not properly.

My parents only care in general and if my grades are bad.

If my grades = bad, then I'm grounded from my pc.

But nothing else, its like somehow watching TV is better then programming.

I have the EXACT same issue...

Very same here

Also, ive found out like someone else on the first page i think, if i go on the comp for 3 - 4 hours my parents think i should get out more and do other things, yet if i watch the tv all day they dont say a thing. Sometimes, if i go on the comp for 3 hours and they say get off there, i say "Ok, im gonna watch the TV is that ok?" and they just go "Yeh that's fine".. .. ..bizzare huh? Lol

By The Way, im not a total couch potatoe XD i do usually do other stuff with my friends =P

my parants have wished for me to quit so many time but then i just use my regular responce... i get better grades then you did and they stop bothering me. all good grades in english are because of this game and i ahve learned to much from. anyways they can't stop me from playing because if they try to ground me they know i'll just find someplace else to play.

I think parents just don't understand why we play or what it's like, because they never had things like it as kids.

I'm banned for a month for hitting my bro, and I've been told to do something social other than play, so now I'm getting a 100 euro skateboard so I can skate with my skater friends...

 That's exactally how my parents are. They don't care I play, but if my grades start going down, its bye bye laptop till they come back up.

Parents=Blame everything on RS, no matter what, even if i (literly...) dont play for a week.

Believe it or not, they don't care how long I play. Heck, they rarely even come into my room...

But anyways, unlike the TV thing people are talking about, it's the opposite. I play Runescape almost all day, they don't really care. I watch TV just for an hour, they say "You should stop watching TV now".

Also, I play Runescape A LOT, and still get good grades.

My parents wouldnt intervene in me playing Rs, they realise im old enough to work out myself whats good and bad for me,

Its my life and if im stupid enough to waste it on some game, more fool me

Theres a fine line between not listening and not caring,

I like to think I walk this line every day.

Pinning blame on Jagex is like trying to put pants on an old man.

You both know he needs them, but he'll just keep dancing around, avoiding them at all costs.
