Parental Controls, are you cursed by them?

Featured Replies

Meh, my dads a computer programmer so he knows about all of this stuff. I could use a proxy, but I don't really want to try it and get in trouble. It's kind of dissapointing that they have to use them actually, since they can't trust me.

Haha my dad is a computer programmer as well (though he mostly does web design and search engine optimization now). Sucks when you're young because they know more about computers than you, but once you get older you tend to be more up-to-date on things than they are. I do graphic work for my dad now because he knows nothing about it :P

And its times like these I thank god that my dad knows a lot about hardware and not software.

I never had any online restrictions in my life, probably won't get any more in the next two years neither.

I don't get parental-control at ages 15, or 16 and up...what have we not already seen or heard of in school? Once or twice some guy goes showing off a picture of a nude girl in his phone and shoves it in your face; its unavoidable.

Yarly. My dad can completely rebuild the computer from the ground up, but a simple password and he's completely denied access to my laptop

I've never had to deal with parental controls, though. I'm pretty sure my parents don't even know enough about the internet to be alarmed. Only recently my mom saw me on TIF and had to ask what it was #-o

"you're talking to other people you don't know??!! YOU COULD GET KIDNAPPED!!"

I've never been set any kind of restrictions. Maybe not because my parents trust me that much, but because I've always known more about computers than them.

Restrictions in my school are a complete nuisance though. If the site is even remotely fun or interesting, it's blocked, and the IT guys can always look into your computer and control it from afar. (Unless you're using a Linux boot CD ;) )

Software is fickle and easily removed. History can be cleared and simply deleted. The only way you can truly monitor someone would be to do it in person.

Thats not to say ive been monitored before, though, its just pretty simple to bypass or hide even if youre limited on resources and/or lack the password. Though my parents probably knew I knew a way to get around it anyway, the only way they couldve done it without me tampering would be to lock themselves in with me. But then its not parental control, its just an obstruction.

As long as you dont let children roam the internet freely with a credit card or other means of e-payment, theres nothing more that can come of it than mental scarring. Id rather my children have an "OH GOD WHAT THE [bleep] INTERNET WHY DID YOU DO THIS" moment than deny them the viewing in the first place. That'll learn them. It didnt learn me, but maybe my children will be smartest than me.

nope. my mom doesn't even know about them.

When I asked my dad for RuneScape membership when I was 11 or so, he told me not to chat with other people. Well, I was selling stuff...He saw me whacking away at the keyboard, and asked what I was doing. Somehow, my sister saved me, she said I was probably giving commands to my character. #-o

And like a good handful of you, my dad is quite good with computers. I think he could've set up a pretty efficient system if he wanted to.

I was just reminded of a time when I asked my dad to do something in control panel. He responded "What the f*** is control panel?"

I use a linux boot CD at school to bypass the synchroneyes crap.

Lol, my Dad actully bought a book about internet safefty..way over exagerated, said like 40% of sites are inapprioite for ages 15 and up. Anyway, my parents cant figure out where the power button is, and (duh?) i'd never help them install P controls...It would be cool if i downloaded a proxy at school, though...

thankfully none of mine know how to block sites. but they will take away the modem if me and my sister argue. hence why i desperatly need my own computer: im almost 18 out of school while sharing one with a 15yo hormonal sister obsessed with My Space. -.-

That would suck. I'm soooo glad I have my own computer, and anyway by the time by sister hits that age and starts obsessing with that stuff I'll be halfway through University :P

On topic, my parents don't know jack-crap about computers. My parents both work/worked for an advertising agency, computer programming really isn't there area of expertise. After 5 years I still have to show them how to attach files to emails.

I've never even been on myspace or facebook because my parental controls block me :wall: Some of you guys are really lucky having parents without much computer knowledge.

I was in school about 3 years ago [high school.. senior] and I noticed that there wasn't any parental controls then.

Because I can definitely remember going on gaming sites, and getting Pr0n ads. at school.

Also, my mother probably would think that parental controls are crap.

when we first got a computer, I was 11. when we got the internet, I remember them downloading ICQ, creating an account for me, finding friends, talking to them. then putting me on the computer and telling me to talk to this person.

all to stop me from being anti-social.

  • 2 weeks later...

My mom doesn't care what I look at, as long as I do not spend hours on the computer.

Retired from Runescape September 1, 2008

I used to have parental blocks on the internet, but I just disabled them and so far nobody seems to care or notice. :twss: (its been about 4 years)

When you mentioned the Dragon Plates I had a sudden vision of a load of gangsters running around in fancy dress yealling "Grim Reaper in da hood!"

since im the one that would have had to set up the parental control, i never had any. My mom broke 3 computers and blamed all but 1 on me -.- even though i had my own and never touched theres, it was still my fault  any way, i live at university now and im fairly confident i didn't set up any on my laptop
