Couldn't find a topic about this, and I didn't think it fit in the sub-categories of this forum. I think it would be neat to share what books you are currently reading, and giving feedback about what you have read in the book. There might be some discussion value to what you think of the book.

I am currently reading Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. So far, I have enjoyed it immensly. Although the relationship between George and Lennie isn't really the type of relationship I would want with my brother, its unique, and quite comical to read about. Yet, at times, its sad at the treatment of Lennie by George. One of the most profound things about the first chapter that noticed early on is the large amount of swearing in the book. But, in my opinion, it isn't really a bad thing. It adds definition to the character of George, and allows you to create your own personality of him based on what Steinbeck gives.

I may have heard this wrong, or am thinking of a different book, but is Of Mice and Men known for being one of the only classics to contain the "F" word?

I like it so far, and want to keep reading, though, I think that if I do, when it comes to class discussion, my ideas will be jumbled up.

What are you reading?

At the moment I'm reading a fair bit of physics and poetry. I just finished rereading The Brothers Karamazov, which is a fairly lengthly novel so I'm having a rest for a few days before I start another, which will probably be For Whom The Bell Tolls by Hemingway. Next to me just now I've got Six Easy Pieces, Six Not So Easy Pieces and The Meaning of it All by Richard Feynman, and my collections of W.B. Yeats and T.S. Elliot. I started reading Paradise Lost, the epic poem by John Milton a few days ago, but found myself reading more of the bible than the poem itself. All the references were a bit more than my brain could handle at the time, but I'll need to get back to it.

^^ The Prince- great book.

I just finished reading "What if? 2" It contains a series of essays by different experts about how history might have been changed as a result of events going differently. Some are major such as decisive battles, others are so obscure such as the last chapter "What if Pizzaro had not found potato's in Peru?" That one was real good, said the potato is the unsung hero of the industrial revolution.

What are you reading?

When you're done with that one read The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck. Amazing writing.

I'm re-reading East of Eden. Such beautiful poetic writing.

I read Animal Farm last year, and it was quite the interesting book, especially when each day, you are analyzing what everything stands for and studying the history along with it.

Then, my teacher decided to show us the movie. That ruined it for me.

I'm reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, by Sean Covey, for my Challenge Language Arts 11 class. It's an interesting book to say the least.

I also just finished rereading Artemis Fowl, and I plan on starting the second one when I get time, and work my way up until Christmas when I get the new one that just came out.

Mainly, I'm reading through The Sword of Truth. It's an amazingly long series, most people here have probably heard of it. I'm nearly done with the second (Stone of Tears), started the first (Wizard's First Rule) about a month ago. They're pretty good books...They don't have me coming back for more and more (Like the Ranger's Apprentice series did/does, can't wait for the next one to be published in America...), but long books (With tiny print), with the exception of LotR, usually don't.

On that note, I'm skimming through my Tolkien collection again. I finally managed to pick up War of the Ring and Sauron Defeated a while ago.

Yea, that happened in my class, too. Most people thought it was stupid or pointless, but I really enjoyed it. I thought it was a great book. It was such a short read, too. I remember I read it in like two or three days. haha Currently, I've gotten hooked on the Twilight Saga. I finished New Moon a couple days ago, and I'm really looking forward to Eclipse. I don't know when I'll be able to get anywhere to buy it, though, which is kinda depressing. I'm really kicking myself for not buying the other two when I picked up Eclipse. Damn you, past self... Damn you!

Cant be as long as the "Left Behind" series (its a melodrama about the events that would happen according to the bible at the end of the world, im not Christian but it was an amazng read)

12 Books in the Original Series

3 Prequels

1 Post-Original Series

Huge kids series

The kids books are like 100 some pages long, and the rest are 400-500 pages long each. I read all but the kids series (I cant be bothered and its cannon anyway)

I'm about halfway through The count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas.

Next I plan to read The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky, which I've been planning to read for a while.

I've heard of them, I think I might have read one. I don't remember. The Sword of Truth uses those really dense pages with ink on basically every square of space, and the longest is just about a thousand pages, IIRC. Someone here said they were about 8000 pages in total, sounds right.

For the record though, has anyone else read the Boxcar Children? I was obsessed with them when I was little. There are over a hundred of them, all at over a hundred pages. Of course, each page has like 100 words.

There have been a few book topics around but they usually die after a few pages, we did have a book club going for a while, and by a while I mean we picked the first book and never got any further.

I've been reading the ender series and the parallel series(kinda), the shadow series by Orson Scott Card. I'm currently on Xenocide and so far its been an excellent series, one of the best I've ever read.

I finished the Ender's series a little while ago, while I really liked the first book the rest of them all I could think of was how pretentious they were. Also I was listening to them because they were audio books, and the people were sounding really annoying.

Currently not reading anything, just finished The Iliad and The Odyssey circa 600-800 BC and then The Penelopiad circa 2000s AD. The Iliad was about the Trojan war around 1200BC, then The Odyssey was the ten years after that and The Penelopiad was concurrent with the Odyssey. Surprised with how much I liked The Iliad, at first disappointed with The Odyssey but was ok with it by the end, The Penelopiad was interesting but way too quick of a read (took like 45 minutes).

I was reading the original book "White Fang", but I have finished it and I am now reading some book called "Peeps". Quite an interesting read actually.

last book i read was like a month ago called "a million dollars by 30". it told the story of a man trying to achieve a million dollars by the age of 30, however, he started at around 23 with about 10 grand. i barely read but it was actually really funny, which helped.

I don't think George is at all sad in the treatment of Lennie.

They are 2 things that have to be together- Like Le Snax, the cheese and crackers seperately taste terrible, but togther they're good :D

Lennie is the one who gets them the jobs due to his strength, but George is the one who does all the talking and tries to keep Lennie out of trouble.

Although I've only watched the movie (Studying it in English).

The relationship is pretty unique though :P

And I'm not reading a book atm.

I finished The Portable Atheist yesterday, a collection of essays and readings put together by Christopher Hitchens on atheism. It's an excellent read, although some of the selections are more readable than others. Probably a more comprehensive critique of various aspects of religion/belief than the big four atheist books thanks to the breadth of authors.

Last night I started The Emperor's New Mind by Roger Penrose. The book is about AI, and about how in his opinion current AI research will not be able to create a conscious robot since mathematical intuition is non-computational. But the book also touches on lots of aspects of physics and mathematics. It's Penrose, so it won't be an easy read, but the first few pages have proved very interesting and thought-provoking so far.
