The neverending runescape goals.

Hi there

I have been playing Runescape for the last two and a half years. I became a member a year ago and I have really enjoyed every aspect of the game. What I wanted to say is that ever since i started I have found that everytime I achieve something I always seem to want something more. This started right from the start when I was a major noob and I didn't know where to get a hammer. I didn't know what the general store or the bank was and I really wanted to make a bronze sword. However I finally with a bit of help from my friend finally found it and made one. The sense of achievement was amazing until I saw someone walk past with an iron scimitar.

I find that even with pretty major achievements such as getting enough money to buy Guthans or getting a slayer helm, the pleasure of achievement is brilliant to begin with, but it fades and all I want is the more money or a higher level.

Is it just me or is the main reason why runescape is so addictive the fact that no matter how much you play all you want is the next level. The main enjoyment is not in the actual playing but in the end result.

Many will disagree with that comment and I sometimes feel that the actual playing is brilliant with the talking to friends killing cool things, getting great rewards etc. However surely if you were told no matter how much you try you will only ever be able to stay at the level you are at. Even those who have 99 in every skill, have killed every boss and done every quest still have more goals.

So my overall conclusion is Runescape only about the end results, the levels you fantasize about in your blogs and in your mind, that end result that at the time means so much and yet fades into the ranks of thousands of other achievements. Will you ever feel content to leave the game without having regrets or will you be the person who always looks at the releases wanting to go back with all your might.

If you have read the whole thing please leave a post. Hope you enjoyed!!! \'

Thanks to Kadad06 my cousin who got me hooked on this awesome game.

Contentment = Retirement :P

Exactly what Jagex doesn't want!

Getting to the end the achievements is the fun part though. Meeting friends and what not. Without that, Rs would be just another "Guilded Game."

thats something i have always been aware of, the game is so open that there will never be a defining conclusion, and the more updates there, are the more things there are to do, and the less likely you are to get your sense of achievement

even when you get all 99's there is a never ending quest for total exp and you think, 'well, if put all this time into it, i might as well keep going'. i think that because i have been aware that runescape is strictly a past time, and a means unto itself, i have never had the need to quit. it doesnt mean i dont inadvertantly take breaks, just that if i quit i probably wont realise it for a while

i think i have achieved alot, but i still think all the time i have put into runescape does not equal 1 of the 'hard' 99's, its a little bit demoralising

Kinda agree on this one. Look at the stats in my sig. Never thought I'd achieve this when I first started my membership. Could only dream of achieving so many 99's. And now that I have them.. well... I just want more. The sense of achievement is totally gone.

99 mining cost me a hell lot of time. I spent months and months on mining those iron ores, and now I just take it for granted.

Oh well, it keeps you eager and playing.

I think it is the lack of finality that ultimately makes an addictive game, and it consequently is what successful MMORPGs aspire for. No doubt the intrinsic human desire for more plays an important part, but so does the purposeful and deliberate addition of schemes that are developed from gaming psychology by the creators, such as the hiscores for instance.

I think it is precisely because of this that we must not be allured into a self-consuming and self-replicating vicious cycle of greed, but strive for a goal far enough without being out of reach, so that upon achievement and retirement we can look back in contentment without regrets. Because we will one day.

My goal each time I play= To be a little bit better than I was when I started.

Whether that mean:

-Have more exp in ___ skills

-Have more money or have used my money on something worthwhile

-gain a level

-finish a task

-Learn a valuable lesson (There are dragons in Bork's lair, bring an anti-dragonfire shield if you don't want to die again)

Stuff like that.

For me its almost the opposite, i set myself goals and enjoy getting them but once I've completed them the reward / achievement seems to get boring quickly, so i set myself another one.

The last time my membership ran out i didnt renew straight away because i couldnt think of any new goals to strive for. Once i had one in mind though i got going again but i know that once i achieve it, i wont be satisfied. It'll just keep me happy for a bit, thens its straight back to working on another goal.

Theres a fine line between not listening and not caring,

I like to think I walk this line every day.

Pinning blame on Jagex is like trying to put pants on an old man.

You both know he needs them, but he'll just keep dancing around, avoiding them at all costs.

Every once in a while that sense of achivement crops back up for me. When star hunting in say the fremminik lands, I can go anyplace because I ahve done the quests. When on landed in shilo village, I had the quest. I am motivated by a desire to get something. I do not train skills because its more fun than something else, but beause I need it for that next quest. I only make money when I have something to spend it on, and normally would not have more than a couple mill in the bank which will slowly errode to nothing.

When I get really close to something, I tend to go full out. I have been saving up about 9m, when I hit 7.5 a couple days ago, my income went from maybe 90k a day to about 200k. In case your wondering if this took months, I am also motivated when I start out. When I started saving I was at about 110k per day.

People tend to be driven by aspiration. Say you and a few friends play Halo 3 alot. If you suck at it, you will improve and get better until you match the skill of your best friend. When people play Mech' Assult on Xbox for the first time they are invariably slaghtered. After a few hours of that they are able to beat anyone who has not played live. If you are better then all your friends though, you will not improve, you will actualy lose skill.

It is very difficult to motivate yourself to be better once you are the best. If your lucky you will have enough desire to stay the best to keep it that way, but generaly you will never improve without some challenge. A few select people actualy can become the best at something, and then get even better.

Its hard to soar like an eagle when your surrounded by chickens (or something like that).

I agree entirely about the end product of a goal (so far for me) being underwhelming, once the first sense of "Yes! I've done it" has passed.

Several of my goals have taken me a while to accomplish, and once I had them that was it, I didn't feel very impressed. I doubt I will with anything, unless I find myself with a 99.

I enjoy fantasies about my goals, though. What I'll do when I accomplish it, how much money I'll have, etc.

'Tis I, 'tis Vindice, 'tis I!

'well, if put all this time into it, i might as well keep going'.

Thats exactly how I think on many levels. Sure I don't have 99 in every skill but I feel like, I have put all this time into the game already, it would seem like a waste to give up or stop now. I know I have some friends that feel the same way.

Reaching the next level, or next amount of xp, or whatever your goal happens to be is what keeps you going. I know between this and my friends on Runescape its hard to put down. It just keeps going...

I agree with you for the most part.

This is my personal experience when I start out this game.

Lower lvls, thought all the high lvls are "elite" because it seems to take long time to train

Takes too much time training "inefficiently" and usually sell the items under their appraised value

"which make that training and making money is hard"

But as I train more, I train faster and make money faster, eventually, I get very addictied to training, almost 3 to 4 hours per day, sometimes even more.

First goal was getting lvl 100, after that, lvl 110, after that lvl 115, after that lvl 120, after that lvl 124, then non combat skills, firemaking, wc, so on and so forth

I did set a very old goal when I start this game, and so far I am like half way there. To be honest, RS has too much replay value, but if your internal drive (motivation) never wanes, you might be in this ride for long time. I take some breaks now and then to restore my drive. I know if I dont play RS in my spare time, I will just move on to other things in life. Most of the part, I am determined to reach the first goal that I set for myself, just to see if I can make it.

Knowing that, I even stick to more slower training method (not that slow, but there are faster way), just to drag out the game alittle longer, this is purely how I enjoy the game, and its always the way how I play it.

The neverending goals applied to anyone as long as they are still interested in it, and to those that move on to other things in life. I kind of understand it when my own lvls are mostly 99s, once you know how to train, it just all depend on if you stick to it or not.

You play the way you want to play (of course within the rules)

/agree. I'd say that if you train a skill enough to enjoy it you'll go to 200m xp!

It is a bit frustrating, that greed.

Before the achievement capes, I would have declared anybody mad who'd predicted I'd be going for any 99, let alone 99 slayer, one day. Now I have 7 of them, slayer included, and I find that I'm calculating and planning to max out at least 5 or 6 other skills. And why? I already have the cape I really wanted.

I... just... can't... stop... Because stopping isn't standing still, it's going backwards. I'm struggling to simply keep my place in the highscores, let alone climb any higher.

Luckily, I still keep plenty of distance and I do get a sense of achievement when I reach a goal. I really did scream out loud and I actually did do a happy dance through the house when I got 99 slayer :D.

Actually, its all lvl 99s with 200mil xp in it each.

And also, collect 1000 set of phat, and 1000 santa, or 1000 set of mask, or so on and so forth.

The goal is endless regarding P2P or F2P

Of course, achieve those crazy goal would probably cost the rest of your life, lol (Or several lifes for that matter)
