Noobody loves Noobs!

I know that there are an abundance of idiots on Rune scape and I openly accept that many of these idiots are new players, particularly younger ones.... but my god do people have to be so rude. I'm in my 20's and have just got into the whole online adventure game thing, so I know very little about online gaming but Im trying to learn. So why when Im just trying to lvl up does some high level jerk feel the need to come over all friendly, ask me my stats then go on to tell me Im nothing but a sad Noob wasnt everyone a Noob at some point? And in reality, the person calling me a Noob is probably a pre pubescent boy who cant hold a conversation in public or look at a member of the opposite sex without having to run to the lavatory this offers me very little solace. The ask me my stats then slag me thing has happened on more than one occasion and it puts me off playing I also dont reply to people anymore and have become an online hermit. I also find that you cant ask any other players for advice when your stuck at something or dont understand something, again you get laughed at and called a Noob. Even though I hadnt heard Noob before playing this game I now see it as very insulting. Ive tried reading online guides and such like so I dont have to speak to people in the game, but doesnt that defeat the purpose of the game, isnt the point that we all kind of band together and play as a network of people from all over the world. I may be a noob at the moment but Im trying to learn and really its off putting and cruel to just pick at people because they are new to the game, I dont beg, I dont irritate people for the sake of it I just try to play the game and have found it to be a very lonely one. So people read this plea from a very nice young lady and the next time some little player comes up and asks what may seem to you a stupid question dont laugh and call the noob, just tell them you dont have to smile just dont be a git!

Partly true, but that's just plain how the internet is. Anonymity means people can do what they want. Few people care about the weak new people. Ever read Lord of the Flies?

It is unfortunate that your playing of the game is being ruined by the idiots that are out there. Unfortunatly that is part of playing the game.

For the most part, people on these forums will give you help and advice in that forum, if you ask for it.

Keep your spirits up, there will be some players out there who won't mind helping.

Awe thanks Kickthat I was quite convinced for a while that I was just going to be told to deal with it... My spirits are buoyed... and I know I should just deal with it but then if we all dealt with it nobody would rant and then all the fun would be sucked out of the internet.

In reply to compfreak847, yes I have read lord of the flies but I thought it was about how people when free of rules and social conform break down to their more baser instincts, partly to do with the survival of the fittest but more to do with pack mentality and a need for leadership even if it is warped, but critical analysis of literature is a very subjective thing, so I'm not saying your wrong! And your right that is just the way of the web... doesn't make it right though!

Bauke... helpful.

In runescape, or any anonymous situation, people tend to do what they enjoy - which, given the demographics of runescape players, seems to be to look out for themselves and not care about others. It could be even simpler then that - I had a level 33 running around following me begging to be my friend a few days ago. I said no and teled - many previous experiences have taught me that random newbs want me to hold their hand, come running whenever a big, nasty level 100 insults them, and give them free stuff. As for LOTF, I am using that as an example; I agree with quite a bit of it.

yes ... this issue has been around for ages, let me assure you tho, that not all players are like that. For example, today i met a person, she was ranked 830 overall. Not only did she answer every question a person asked her, nicely, she also gave out free addy kites out to random people, saying that while she like that there was a trade limit (anti real world trading) she disliked how she was not able to give out freely to those who are really in need of help ( She was smithing at that time). So, just ignore these people and just try to enjoy the game, hopefully, one of these days, you may meet a person such as her!

Sadly, this is all just part of the game.

As you mentioned, most of the players are in their teens - they haven't quite yet grasped the adult concept of the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do to you." It's just some odd mentality that some players have. They feel a need to rub it in other people's faces that their skills and combat levels are higher than others, as if this makes them a better player.

Although flaunting a date is sort of frowned upon on these forums, apparently, I do have to say that I created my first RuneScape character in 2001. To this day, I still get called a noob on occassion. I have no doubt that I've been playing for a far greater amount of time than some players, but I still get nagged on for having a lowly level 88 combat!

In a perfect game, everyone would be nice to each other, and everyone would help each other out. But sadly, however discouraging it may be, that just isn't the case with Runescape, or most online games for that matter.

I can assure you though, there are countless players out there who are willing to help you out! On a day-to-day basis, I receive more help from total strangers in the game than I get insulted. The VAST majority of players, I think, understand that EVERYONE at one point started out with level 1 stats, and EVERYONE at one point has asked another player a question, for advice, help, etc.

The only advice I can give you is to just try your hardest to shrug their nasty comments off! That's what I do. I don't play to make millions of gold, I don't play to have 99 in all my skills. I play to have fun, and that's what I do: I have fun, and I don't really care how long it takes me to become a "High Level" player.

I'm a bit skatterbrained! Sorry for the jumbled thoughts.

Please feel free to add me in-game: Serpent_Eye. My private chat is always turned on, and I play almost every day. If you see me online, please feel free to ask me questions or anything like that!

(Welcome to RS and online gaming, by the way!)

Welcome to the tragic soap opera of life. I got into video games as an escape from reality. Custody battles, domestic disturbances (generally stemming from a bit of alcohol abuse). In any case, my point comes to the fact that people that are playing these games usually want some form of satisfaction in being better. The reason that "noobs" are often targets is because most people are mediocre players that want to feel superior. However, there are those of us out there who still play for the enjoyment of what the game offers. That being said, if you ever need help, you could add my character to your friends and I'll be happy to dispense any wisdom I can. I rather enjoy being able to help out others.

I'm experiencing a déjà-vu, we all are, I guess. I too joined this forum after feeling completely cut off from the RS society, liking the game, but hating the players in it. I think many people join this forum after having been called "noob" once too often. Just stick around here, read the help forum and the archive of wisdom and post your questions here. You'll learn loads and find out that there are plenty of helpful players as well.

I hate this so much about the community especially about the part where you said that you can't even bother asking people for help. I'm lucky enough that I started back in classic where people would show me what to do and would help me even if it was an inconvenience to them. Because of that I always try to be nice to people regardless of their level and their inexperience in the game (unless their just a complete d-bag then I just leave and let them figure it out). I hope you do come to realize not every person in runescape is worth avoiding (even though 99% of them are :? ).

Very true!

There seems to be a trend going on: if you were helped out by people when you first started playing the game, you yourself tend to help other new players out!

So many people helped me out when I first started playing the game (and sadly, none of them play any longer) and it's nice to put some good energy of mine into the game!

Really? Well I never got much help in the beginning. But I do try to help people if the task at hand isn't to large or time consuming. A sort of what comes around goes around. By helping others, I help improve the community as a whole!
If the CORPORAL beast is this hard, imagine how hard a GENERAL or COLONEL beast would be. a corporal is not even an admirable rank in armies that use that ranking system.

Yeah, it is a pking minigame, so any arguments anybody makes will probably be biased.

The best way this will end :Everybody just says,"I'm not arguing with you anymore, goodbye."

The worst way this will end: I don't really know, psychological warfare? Worldwide thermonuclear war? Pie eating contest?

My best friends know my catch-phrases. The one I use most often is "Noobs ftw". New players are often very pleasant people because they haven't yet been corrupted by the community. If you'd like to, add me to your friends list, I love helping people out and a new friend is always great. ::'

I love to meet people; send me a pm if you see me on RuneScape! :)

Hey, dont let them bother you, I've a had my skiller called a "noob" many, many times and the funny thing is - as soon as I switch to my main, the person calling me noob starts begging for money

Remember, "Noob" is the limit of a noob's vocabulary.

If anyone calls you noob, just say "I know you are, but what am I?", and keep saying it if they continue to call you noob, they might eventually snap and break a rule, then you can report them, haha.
