Tip it is Cliquey - Share you thoughts/Experiences

Featured Replies

Didn't know where to put this as there is no "forum feedback forum," but only a "forum updates and suggestions" one, I thought General was the best forum, even though it is not about Runescape.

Before you rant back at me. Please consider my point and how you can respond to it in a way that is constructive to others/beneficial to yourself.

Recently ive found myself getting annoyed at the irony in the forum. Perhaps im exaggerating a bit, but the basic principal in my argument remains.

I do enjoy the forum, but I find that we as a community are very cliquey, for those who dont know what I mean...

: a narrow exclusive circle or group of persons ; especially : one held together by common interests, views, or purposes

Personally, I dont find these forums a particularly friendly place for newbies. Whenever I see a new forum user, his/her post may not be perfectly relevant to the particular forum sub section/and grammar and punctuation are often written in the style of a 10 year olds.

But for me the average age of forum users is not an issue, what brings us together is a game. Just because somebody might have had 10 years less schooling than we have, it doesnt mean that we should try and push them away.

For example, when I see a newbie on Help and Advice, it will take them on average more time to get their question answered because the majority of posts are just spam/helpful but irrelevant information or flaming. I think what we have to realise is that tipit is slightly different to other forums whereby the majority of people speak sensibly, and that posts are not normally excessive on a topic. This is a different routine for the new members of our community; after they have browsed for a while, they will realise how things are done and the level of maturity.

Another point I want to bring to your notice is how we treat people from other communities. There are numerous threads such as HAHA look at the stupidity of RSOF/zybez/runehq

Threads like this may have some funny screenies (and I admit, they do) but lets use the basic rules of politeness and be tolerant towards other peoples mistakes

...So two tips Uncle King Joe...

1. Dont let hatred get the better of you, accept people from other communities and realise that we can participate in events without having to flame others. (events can be in game events/posts/discussions)

2. Treat/speak about others as you would like to be treated/spoken about. (in game, forums, posts, discussions)

Sorry for speaking like such a 'father' but i think it's a serious issue

Comments and feedback are welcome, please keep discussion clean and if you would like to flame. Please flame nicely.

Thank you for reading!

Thank you to tripsis for an awesome sig!

A lot of the time people posting on help and advice do not give enough information about what they are actually looking for; therefore the answers can be quite general and vague.

I would see the making fun of people on other forums as a kind of friendly competition so to speak. However it is more aimed at the individual person's idiocy then the community as a whole.

preach man! i agree, people here seem to think they are all so kind and wise which in some cases is true, there are some really clever and some stupidly kind people around so obviously this doesnt apply to everybody.

But everyone of us learns from experience so we should nto shout at somebody for making a mistake, just correct them politly so they dont make the same mistake in the future.

And as for age? what of it? i have been posting here for probably 6 years now, since is was 12/13 and like to think i made some valid contributions, heck i wrote hte runevillage agility guide when i was like 14/15 and thats still going strong, so not asll us young ones have invalid opinions. Ans im sure the older players could have great fun chatting to the younger, oe of my good friends here at uni is around 23 yars older than me and we have a great time!

in conclusion people should just think before they post, if your going to yell at somebody about grammer jus think, 'maybe english is not their first language? how much could i say in their native tounge let along use correct grammer' or 'what if this person is a lot younger than me and has never been taught that? maybe i should teach them insted of yelling...?'

manners ar'nt hard, we all have them, use them!

I agree, I have found these days that the community of TipIt has become a lot worse than 2-3 years ago (I have been reading these forums since 2005). Everyone hates specific types of people etc. These past few weeks I've actually considered leaving because of this, because every day when I come home to check new threads I see posts that just make me irritated. I have actually been reading the Zybez forums since a year ago, and I don't see why everyone hates it so much. I even think it's a better community than here to be honest. So I'm considering joining the Zybez community, since the TipIt community has been disappointing me these days :( (This post was written in a rush by the way, might explain anything that doesn't make sense).

[insert birds flying in a circle here]

Yes, that sig was annoying.

I try to take all posts/threads on their own merits. Granted there are a few trolls around here, but i haven't seen too much in the way of people not letting new-er members having their chances.

Big thanks to Stevepole for the signature!^

You're correct.

But it is not Tip.it as a whole, rather a few select people who derive some form of pleasure at harrasing new members.

I agree. I know the vast majority of people on here are mature and all that but there are a few people that know that they do it.

However there are some people that do it without knowing it.

Thank you to tripsis for an awesome sig!

The demographic that this game caters for would leave only one possible outcome TBH.

I've found the community cliquey in the sense that there is a small group of "regulars" who constantly back each other up and make comments at the expense of others. "Group think" reigns supreme. I've often noticed a blatant falsehood or misconception continuously reinforced by Lemming #2 right through to Lemming #25 purely because Lemming #1 said it was true.

I found it particularly difficult to post here originally as I felt that a few people who would like to portray themselves as benevolent and decent, also find themselves falling over themselves to flame alongside their friends when any accepted 'wisdom' is questioned.

Also, all of the wannabe mods (however well they try to hide it) don't do anything for posts that would be harmless if not for the back-seat modding/flamey comments.

I think the mods here do a fantastic job sifting through the scum tho.

Yeah I agree. Also Woking is near me, I'm in Guildford

You may have something there. This community used to be much friendlier when I first joined, and that's what kept me around. Nowadays people are more likely to bash a new user if their join date wasn't too long ago. It doesn't seem to matter if their posts are brilliant, with valuable information or smart insight. If you joined recently or have a very low post count then you are wrong, simple as that. And that's exactly the kind of attitude that is making some users turn away.

I try to help others as much as I can in Help & Advice. But most people there only bother to answer easy questions, often doing nothing more than repeating the same thing a hundred times. I'm always seeing topics with 2+ pages of people just filling up space whereas another topic would be left empty for hours or even days just because it's not a question that can be answered in a line or two. It's like people don't like to be asked something that's not general knowledge.

All forum users who have been around for years and have thousands of posts pretty much know each other. They seem to be grouping into "factions" whereas they agree with their allies and attack those they don't like, who's right or wrong seems to be irrelevant sometimes.

But hey, no community is perfect. For the most part everyone tries to be nice to others, and all that bad stuff doesn't happen as often as some would think. (apart for a few idiots who never shut up)

POG3.jpg

Pretty much what Dragon said.

Thread terminated.

I guess that means I'm the thread Terminator?

No Tip.Iters were harmed in the making of this post.

I've been feeling like this a lot lately, too. I even posted something in "leaving tip.it" because I was so sick of the attitude toward newer members... and yeah, I got bored and came back within like 3-4 days -.- . I'll admit, I haven't always been the nicest, most mature person, and even now I do have my moments, but it still sickens me when I see one of these so called "noobs" being treated like scum. They're just kids. They have every right to be playing this GAME that we do. I think some of us just take all of this way too seriously.

This happens with any group that has had a long road, Tip.it has been around for a while. The old timers know each other well and bring in the smarter new guys and then treat the others like garbage to make them leave so they don't post horrible insignificant things. I'm not saying that every new person here needs to be smart or achieved much in game, but they need to at least read a guide or two on the subject that they question.

I personally only have a few friends on here, which the only reason I was able to meet them was through ventrilo. They bashed me for the first couple of days, but then they realized that I had potential and we started getting along well.

When I came back from quitting for a couple months, all my tip it friends weren't on or either deleted me and moved onto new groups that fit them.

I think people just need to come to this forum ready to take some jokes or criticism, besides that, why does it really matter what someone over the internet said about you?

yeah people do form clicks and then rant not their own opinions but the clicks opinoions

enex2sigjpegkm3.jpg

I don't think I've ever seen a group of people gang up on another for no apparent reason, I mgiht be wrong but it isn't a crime to be of the same opinion of your friends. Generally speaking you'll get on with those that share a lot of your ideals than those that don't.

What you are referring to definitely happens in the rate this forums consistently.

When an achievement isn't something that most people are impressed by they go to whether the person is their friend or not for their rate and comments.

britonlongbo.png

Very nice thread I agree with you, people shouldn't be haters, Help a newb out and be friendly. ::' Wow everybodys replys are so long and mines like 2 sentences... :P

I understand what you are saying, and agree to some extent. Like most communities, cliques are formed and not everyone is as mature as they could be. Sometimes it really can't be helped, but other times it can. Those who choose to act like idiots shall be considered as such, and those who don't, will not be.

I think a good example of this is when the old unofficial clan chat (Lightning's) was... you know, gone? And people were deciding between clan chats. In the end, there were a few, and frequenters of each always seemed to harass the others...

And of course, this is just within TIF itself, basically.

All in all, our community would be amazing if people did not act like such idiots sometimes. :notalk:

When I see people say it, I pronounce it "poon" in my head. Makes more sense to me. My friend said it in real life once and I almost kneed him in the family-maker.

$DO || ! $DO ; try
try: command not found

People form egos and feel superior over others on the internet.

Whether you have a higher post count, longer registration time, or your general knowledge that you know are all contributing factors to how you post, and act, and word your posts.

Tip.It consists of 13-20 year olds with raging hormones and the ideals that they, individually, are better than everyone either mentally, physically, or because of some status they own online.

From this, we all formulate posts resolving around this. If someone is inferior to us, we will most likely try and disprove their speculations, or arguments. If someone is superior than us, we will offer a 'nicer' argument towards their argument, or just agree with them or take their word for it.

Flames & moderate insults come from those that try to break this 'forum quota'. You'll often see the largest egotistical users, or the ones with the higher post counts either one line posting, flaming, or degrading the newer, or even older users of the forum.

This doesn't account for trolls though, though they are fun to watch people get lured into them, lol.

True discussions only arise when the mature, and those not seeking self-gain from the forum, go in to voice their opinion/argument, with evidence.

However everyone is a little bit of everything, while others contain a majority of one style of posting, while others contain an equilibrium as well.

I know I'm not perfect or adhere to this, but the attitude of your posts, or personalities of your posting style is all defined from the reasons above.

I just hope people don't take my word for it.

About 1 year ago, I thought tif couldn't get any worse, but it did. It's actually impossible to communicate now. Whatever you post, all you will get in a handful of flamming and snide comments. This forum is neither friendly, or mature, as a matter of fact it's simply worthless. You definitively won't see me here anymore, because sadly you just don't deserve me here. And I urge anyone who isn't like the scumbags who regularly polute tif to do the same, and leave if atleast to go to another RS fansite community. It's going to be a funny sight to see as this forum spirals down into hell, because yes, it will.

What kind of jerk are you to laugh at a failing community?

I would not say we're failing though; there are just so many idiots on here anymore is all. At any given time half the posts in Help and Advice are "im por how can i make gps???" I find it rare that there's a decent question in the sub-board, so rare that I don't even visit it any longer. Most are simple things that can be found in guides/databases/other active topics.

I've experienced snubbing by many higher-level Tip.It-ers in game, but never on the forums. If you type out your words and spell them properly, assuming your post is relevant, nobody will flame you.

I love to meet people; send me a pm if you see me on RuneScape! :)

I agree with your opinion, your right about the cliques, just look at rate this and sort of on the photo's sticky in general disscussion (although its more open). I also think that tip it has gone downhill over the past two years, and a lot of the good guys have left, and newer more aggressive people have joined. There also seems to be a lot of trolling lately, something which is entirely uncalled for.

i wouldnt say were all mean and hateful, most the time were doggy each other as a joke. like this one for example, kota is a woman. real life is too much maturity, i think what your seeing is a lot of us just getting our obnoxiousness out here.

as for cliquey... THE GALLERY IS VERY FRIENDLY, hint hint wink wink go der we love you all and want to see more art!!!!

-blogscape is rather cliquey at times. but usually its Evil mumm Ra chat click one, and lightning click two and both are very friendly.

So true. This game is like life for some. When someone makes some stupid comment about the game, or say something that is untrue about the game or whatever, these people label the person as a dumb person altogether, rather than someone who doesn't know how to play.
