BlueLancer
It wastes too much time unfortunately, and sadly some people don't realize that they're wasting the best years of their lives on this. :s How so? If they weren't, they would just be watching T.V or eating or playing another video game. Yeah you can say people who play RS "waste the best time of their life" while you go and play Call of Duty. Same exact thing. I don't believe that hellbellz ever said that what he did wasn't a waste of time. Either way it doesn't change the fact that runescape is indeed a waste of time. Anything besides working & earning money is practically a waste of time. Hell, I don't know many people whose best years fell on the ages 11-16. Neither did mine. In most countries you can't legally drink, smoke, go to bars or nightclubs, get real jobs, drive a car, buy cruise/airline tickets, see movies rated M or AO, open cell phone plans, sign any documents or agreements without a parent's consent, change religions/names, get married, have fun in a casino.. You're practically owned by your parents as a teen. Modern life in that age these days usually consists of studying most of your time, playing sports or video games and hooking up with friends or significant others. Most of that is a 'waste of time', or if you look it from another perspective, a "part of life". If you leave out everything that's a waste of time, your life would be so boring you'd have no reason to be happy or live. (And no, I haven't played RS or other similar games for years)

Trollface
RuneScape is a form of entertainment, like anything else. Until you're not being entertained, then it's a waste of time. godofskils
I'd say that essentially runescape helped to improve my time management (not just in-game) as i've had to complete all my college/school work, and on top of that i played, so in some ways its helpful, but i can see how it could be thought of as a time waster. 99 cooking achieved 15/07/200799 hunting achieved 19/12/200799 firemaking achieved 29/11/2008
stormveritas
There are always more efficient things to do. If you're out walking and getting exercise, you could be running. If you're reading a book, you could be reading a more challenging book. If you're taking a class, you could be taking a harder class. Is it really time wasted if it's time spent doing something you genuinely enjoy?

no_way2go
It indeed 'wastes' so much time but it also gives allot of satisfaction back, I'm currently not active playing (only f2p GE merchanting, 5 mins a day) cus I know it will take up too much of my time when I start playing again and that's not the best idea now I'm at university wich takes up most of my time, also don't wanne neglect my girlfriend for rs. I recently had a discussion about this whole runescape 'time consuming'-thing with two of my friends (one of them introduced me to rs 6 years ago, now also retired, and the other one also invested 1000+ hours into it). We came to the conclusion that if we ever had too much time on our hands... take for instance you get an accident and become handicapped and are unable to work/leave home but you still get enough money from the governement to have a confortable life. What would you with all the time? Play rs offcourse, it would be ideal :P As member i'd never get bored I think, you can just keep playing it: set new goals for yourself, check out the weekly/monthly updates, hunt for this monster/item, raise that skill, get x-total xp, get x-total lvl, complete those quests, ... The list is endless and the great thing is that it's just so much fun, the game really gives a feeling of accomplishment. It aren't 'just pixels', this game also has a great community. If you want you can throw away your whole life with rs, it's endless. I'd also never give away my account/items because I know I will start playing again one day start, it's just irresistable. :) (Forgive me for my spelling mistakes, I'm not English : ) - Back to casual f2p scaping due to limited time (university and girlfriend ) -

Exactly my thoughts; I wasted my time watching a season of favourite TV show - that cost me 1012 minutes of my life. Why did I do it? Because I like it - its a hobby, not a lifestyle, same applies to Runescape. I find it amazing how the list didn't include any console computer games - especially games such as Halo or CoD. Seems to me that people have a personal objection to playing games on a computer.

Admerial
I think that runescape has to be one of the biggest waste of time. Not sure about others but I know for those who started in Runescape Classic, and are still playing to this day may have wasted a lot of time that they could of spent doing something more productive. I use to be the kid that would get off the school bus and run to the house, log onto runescape and play till my mom came home ( 3 hours later ) and told me to get off and do homework. Those were the days when I was content to sit in front of the computer and play for hours on end trying to get as many 99 skills as I could. I am not saying I regret playing the game, I had a great time but I think it is one of the bigger time wasters in life. Sure you can point to other things being a waste, like playing too much COD4 on xobx live, or watching youtube too often as time wasters. But I think when we all step back from the game and really examine our lives, look at what we have accomplished in an online game we get that sense of pride that we really did something meaningful. But in the end runescape is not going to help you out in college, if anything it may cause your grades to slip, to neglect your close friends, and to have mood swings ( when you get vistage drop or die will full guthans ). Its not something you can put on your resume and say hey I was a clan leader in this online game runescape, my skill total is 2275 and am 137 combat can u hire me for a job? The first few years of playing may not seam like a waste but after 3 -4 5 years and doing the same thing over and over it becomes a waste Jagex normally doesnt permanently ban people for Bug abuse. Blingkachi50
Biggest time waster is school. Without school the whole world would be so much more intelligent than it is right now. Agreed. But to a certain extent I think that School (as much as I hate it) is neccessary. But I really don't see why we have schooling (in America at least) as a Mandatory activity past the grade level of 8th grade. Exatly... School from pre-school to 8th grade is the only necessary one. From then on you should just go to college/a specific school for your desired profession. OT: Everything is technically a waste of time, do as you enjoy. Bauke
Runescape doesn't require anything from you. You can play it 80 hours a week.. or just half an hour. It's entirely up to you. There's not a single obligation. Also, games are played for fun. For enjoyment, relaxation, whatever. Is that wasting time? I don't think so. Runescape is what you make out of it. Omar
Games are generally not productive (unless you somwhow get money from playing games), so yeah, the idea is to waste your time. Star_Fox
a bit of a contradiction but writing stupid, pointless articles in which no one would listen to is a bigger time waster in my opinion.
Laura
I love the overwhelming bias of the article. It is as if the author never drew a conclusion or backed up his reasoning. You say sudoku is a time waster, when many scientists link it to a hierarchy of thinking. Perhaps the author should actually play these "games" for more than ten minutes before they come to a conclusion that they are a waste of time. To put simply, life could be related as a waste of time. If you are not "wasting time" to have fun or do what you enjoy, what else are you possibly doing that does not allow you to do so? To be conclusive, I failed to see that article on the list. What could possibly be the point of reading an article about things that waste your time? Omar
^It is, unless you're researching stuff/learning/doing something generally productive. To put simply, life could be related as a waste of time. Remember when I got flamed for saying that? RS is a waste of time. Sudoku isn't. If I were to rate them on a scale of 10 for wasting time, RS gets a 9 and Sudoku a 0. Sudoku helps develop your thinking; if there was such thing as a Thinking class, Sudoku could be homework. RS teaches you what a Mjolnir is. That doesn't make RS a bad thing. It's just a way to kill time. Matt: You want that eh? You want everything good for you. Well I'm sorry it turned out that way for you. If it wasn't for RS I'd probably be out getting drunk every weekend and getting into trouble. I've had a solid girlfriend for about a year now and have good grades. Personally I dont think a sport has any good "long term" benefits. The only time it benefits you is if you go pro. The only thing it will do is increase you're risk of a long term injury. A kid playing out football team at the last home game split leg nearly in half (the bone) as well as tore several vital ligaments. I have a feeling he wont be on the field again as well as having severe arthritis and other problems later in life due to an injury like that. I don't find that to be a good example is all. Really the only valid argument you pose is school. Most of the people I know that play RS make very good grades and take AP courses.
Laura
Remember when I got flamed for saying that? Indeed I do. But now I see that it is a relative statement, one that only an individual itself can decide. If you look at it from a biological standpoint, we have been taught that an organism's role is to survive and further the species. Humans do not have a problem with either. But again, that is only one standpoint, as there is essentially an infinite loop of ways one could see the statement itself. Regardless if I get flamed, it is an open opinion, one that cannot be decided by a majority. Anyways, I should probably stop. :P
hellbellz
Wakka, you don't realize some key points of playing football? It raises your self esteem. It gets you into a team oriented environment which can help your teamwork skills later in life. You get involved in the community and the school. I can also say the biggest plus is the physical condition it helps you achieve. I'm just saying Runescape doesn't really help you achieve anything, but talk to online friends and click on some monsters and trees... The game literally wastes time, helping you do nothing but basic math skills. You're not helping anyone while you play this game.
