More fun or more respect?

This is a topic about fun and respect in RS.

We all know that RS is about having fun. Still, the game is full of repetive things that you have to do if you want to reach the high levels in for example crafting or smithing. I know that we all like different things in the game, and some players find it really fun to do these things.

But I can't keep wondering: Why are so many of those that don't find it fun really doing it, again and again, without break? A few examples of what I mean here could be make 40k bowstrings or melt 30k steel bars. To get a real high smithing level you have to first either spend loads of cash on ore or mine it yourself and then walk back and forth to a furnace a few hundred times (If you don't use super heat, but you still have to click a lot). The most of the game is about these repetive tasks and the most of us tries to complete these tasks as quick as we can. This to achieve our current goal so we can quickly start on our next one or reward ourself with doing something we think is fun.

To me it seems like way too many just do these repetive tasks to win respect from others and that they don't really care about if what they're doing is fun or not. Instead of doing what they really do want to do, they start doing these repetive tasks in the hunt for respect and fame. This is, according to me, one of the biggest problems in RS.

And I don't say that I'm myself not affected by this. Because I'm. In my history in RS I have many times done things that I haven't really wanted to, but done anyway to reach that high level everyone else seems to have and to get more respect from friends and other players.

But however hard we train and for however long time we do this, there will always be more of these tasks that, if we're honest to ourselves, don't really want to do. But we still do them! And we will always think that we will be satisified once we have reached our next goal.

This is if we don't break this chain and do those things that we really find fun in between these "must does". If we go and just hang out with friends or perhaps play a couple of castle wars games. Whatever you like to do in the game, make sure to do it every now and then. Otherwise you might very well become trapped inside this cage of hunt for respect and see nothing but the fame that awaits you as you have completed just one more of those repetive tasks. Then, when you're done with just that one, you will go and hang out with your friends. Another problem with this thinking is that when you once is done with this and go to hang out with your friends, you might find that you don't have any friends left.

I realise that to progress in the game you simply sometimes have to do things that you don't find fun. This gets more and more common too as you get better and get higher skills and complete more quests in the game. But still, you must remeber to take a break from these things and have fun inbetween.

Because even if you get more respect, you won't get more fun. And from my view that is what is the most important thing in RS.

Then it is also of course so that doing these tasks can lead to many new opportunities to have fun. Then you should of course do these things, but you must still remember to take breaks.

This is my view of this. I'm not turning to anyone special with this topic. I just want to give everyone a warning and make you think about what you do in the game. Ask yourself the question what is most important to you:

More fun or more respect?

I felt that this needed to be discussed, since I feel that this is one of the biggest problem in the game today.

So, discuss.

More fun, definatly.

What's the use of getting respect.

I don't think you're going to tell your children later 'I WUS RANK 4 IN SLAYOR@@'

You play games for fun, and if you play for fun, you'll enjoy it more being able to complete more and maybe better goals which will eventually get you more respect.

Fun > All,

it's a game after all.

I agree with you in this too. Everyone should of course play the game in the way they want to. The ones I'm talking about is those who do these things not for fun, but just to gain more respect, even though that isn't really what they want.

I think most people grind to get a higher level to enjoy what you can do at that level. Although some people do exactly as you say and go for game fame but I don't think thats for the majority of the people who grind boring skills. Personally I do what I enjoy because if I'm bored whats the point realy? I may grind alot but I do enjoy what I do. There are a few exceptions like when I got 70+all and stuff I may have hated the skills but it had to be done.

If your just hunting for game fame you deserve no respect at all because that is just pathetic to a whole new level.

So I say Fun>respect. Even though respect can be aa bonus for training to be able to access something new and have a new experience which is most likely fun.

On a last note, would I have spent 75M+ on runes for Castle Wars if I didn't aim to have fun :D :XD:

 isnt that up to them?? if they want to spend hours and hours on end crafting or what ever. then thats what they want to do. At the end of the day if they didnt enjoy it why would they do it???

Surely... they enjoy gaining the next level?? and gettin the benifits of being the higher level (money and repesct from there friends) so all that time that they spend cooking for fighting is worth it when they feel good about gettin there level or money or new armor to show off. and people will say "wow that must of taken ages =D> Well done" thats what they play for

^^ agree with Master_Smither on that too :)

I didn't feel satisfied with my account until I got all 70+. After a while, even that started to bore me, so I set myself a goal of all 80+. I do not want respect, I want levels that satisfy me, even if getting those levels is quite boring.

If I play castle wars or something for a day, I feel like I've wasted my day and haven't done anything productive. That may be the same while fishing, but at least that doesn't make me feel that way.

I like my farming and quest capes a lot. Not because of the respect I gain, but because I'm satisfied with what I've achieved. I think wearing my spottier cape over my farming cape when I have to run proves that. The occasional 'nice cape' when I'm wearing my cape is fun, though. :D

I don't care what people think of me IRL so I care even less on some computer game. I train up my levels not because I want to be respected, but because I want to get that level for the benefits of what I can do (Like I just got to level 60 att for dragon) or because I enjoy the skill (Smithing for example). Getting respected would be a secondary thing to me.

Seems like the most of you agree with me here :) That's great  . Of course most of us train to get the benefits of having a higher level or for have completed a certain quest. Not to do something that you feel that you have to do but not really want to do.

And TheSpyder, of course it is up to everyone to choose. But I find it stupid to choose to have boring instead of having fun. Don't you agree?

Getting respect should always be, as Racheya here said, a secondary thing according to me.

This guy here managed to say exactly how I feel. I achieved all 60+, got bored, got all 70+, got bored, got all 75+, got bored and am now going for all 80+. Mining, for example, may be boring, but just seeing an 80 instead of 75 makes me happy.

Although, I can play Castle Wars for a day, and just feel good, but I'll go back to skilling the day after.

And I won't wear my herblore/crafting cape where it isn't needed, while runecrafting for example.

It is clear that whoever who responds in this type of thread is going to reply fun. It is a matter of whether how much of respect comes into play. The word fun is quite general, to some people, the fun is getting respect, such as huge amount of cash/skillcapes. These people would reply as fun being more important, but in the context of the topic, they are more of the "respect type". It also appears quite silly to try and gain respect in an online game to some.

I for one is going for 99 smithing (soon, some 300k xp). Yes, is a goal, and is a fun goal. But there is also the side of respect where it drives me on when the skill doesn't appear so fun.

I also got a borderline thing with D-plate. I was one of the first ones to make it and wear it, all the signs were that it was going to drop in price. In one way, I can be making it for fun and not for the respect of money, in other ways I was aiming to gain respect by owning and making a D-Plate early. But I got to say, the feeling of having a frequently talked about item was worth every gp, hence it was "fun" (though thrilling is more accurate).

Being able to do everything in the skill is sort of a respect thing in another angle. Unless you going to make that item forever and ever, why get it? Aren't you just getting it for the sake of having respect for doing anything. Or even, an excuse for not getting the 99, short cut to glory. Not saying I feel that way.

So, I probably say I play the game for fun, but highly influenced by actions that in my view is respectful. I like skilling, hence I do it, but I like to be respected for doing it. I like the 99 capes, but I am not going to get an easy one like fletching or cooking, because in my eyes, getting it makes me look like a cheap cape grabber who is in it for the quick 99. Even if I have the financial capability, I prefer to use method that doesn't make any losses even if slower, as I see buying the majority of the material without work into it as cheap.

I'm being too philosophical...

Very good thinking here. You might very well be right in that I choosed the wrong word here, or should have explained a bit more about what I meant. Fun is indeed a very broad word, which can mean an awesome amount of different things. If you asked some people what it meant, you would probably get as many answers as the number of people you had asked! And as you say here, for many of these people (In this case it would be players) it would be to gain respect. A few of those who already have replied here say that this is exactly what they mean by fun: To gain respect. I understand this, and I accept it. As long as this is what they find fun they should of course keep going with it. As long as the hunt for this respect does not become bigger than the hunt for fun, and then I mean something that you enjoy doing in the game, it's fine for me (And most probably most others as well).

If I do a task to get a good item or a skill cape, the respect is a bonus. For me, in almost any game I play except for COD4, the journey is what is fun, not the achievment in and of iteself. I enjoy having the goal, without this, RS wouldn't be fun for me.

The grind is commonplace to all MMO's, even Guild Wars in which you can start a character at the maximum combat level and with all the best equipment unlocked whenever you want (as you still have to farm pvp points for higher ranks, farm money for better looking gear etc.). And yes, people do it for the respect, but there's no denying that respect can easily translate into fun at that point. It's much like why people try to gain achievement points on Xbox Live by playing through bad games that they don't like, either to become the best around their peers, or even ranked somewhere in the world. It's about what you get at the end, not what you get during. The same attitude is demonstrated in real life when people spend 4-10 years of their young life going through university, one of the most gruelling and for the most part, "un-fun" experiences ever conceived by man, in order to obtain the end products; income, job security, and respect. It's human nature I suppose.

While it is true that I do respect players that spend a ton of time training their skills, I respect people who are friendly and kind even more. Those that are friendly and always help out others make the game so much more fun regardless of level. I'd rather hang out with a level 50 friend who would'nt mind having a chat now and then than a level 138 master who thinks of me nothing more than a mere annoyance.

I feel that respect should be given through attitude and not amount of time spent, all in all I would rather have fun.

anyone who plays for respect is a douche, i know a lot of people who say they grind for fun, but I know its BS and they just want to be respected.

And i've got to say i agree with Returned3, 100%. I respect the players attitude more than their skills. Fair enough if they have lots of 99's but if they don't have a particularly nice demeanor in game, and treat people nastily, any respect i had for their skills is gone.

Well, I don't know about you, but I usualy make friends while doing these 'repetitive tasks' that you mentioned, instead of losing them.

Moreover, I don't do these tasks in order to gain respect, but for my own feeling of satisfaction.

For example, my current goal is 99 Woodcutting, gained with yews in f2p (although I find Woodcutting relaxing in some bizzare way, but lets not argue over that), and I'm just about to get it done (I'm about 700K exp away from 98), and I can already feel the 99, as a mood-boost, lol.

I completely agree with you. And this is partly the reason I don't have any 99s, because I put fun and friends before grinding skills. I'd much rather go play a game of Castle Wars than grind out 13M xp even in a skill that I enjoy.

Getting from level A to level B may not be the most fun, but the sense of accomplishment and self satisfaction is worth it. Plus, by training skills, you unlock/get better at fun activities, like mini games and boss huning. For example, a level 75 in rune and using a dragon long may find it frustrating that he keeps getting killed in Castlewars. However, by training his skills up, he can become a large asset to his team, thus enjoying the game.

I play for socializing and debates. Indeed, I choose neither of the options.

RuneScape works like an IM for me; I can keep my friends just to the game that way. The last thing I need are all my RuneScape friends messaging and e-mailing me throughout the day. As to the debating, I talk politics, economics, and religion with anyone who'll give me the time. So, if you're interested... -points to signature-

Nothing irks me like someone who demands respect though. When somebody in a Slayer cape (example only, I do not hate slayers) comes up to me and says, "Quest cape??? Lawl gf nub!!1" I launch into my pixel levels versus humans speech. Far too many people believe that because they had more free time to level their characters they deserve "respect" for their "achievements". :|

I love to meet people; send me a pm if you see me on RuneScape! :)
