Internet Memes

I know the point of them is to be as stupid as possible, thus somehow making them 'funny', but why do you people do it? Tradition? To fit in? To annoy people like me who don't like them? Do you actually think there is comical value to them?

Don't take this as too hostile of a question. Yeah, I think memes are stupid but I'm also legitimately interested in what drives one to use them.

Rainy_Day edit; This thread is not an excuse to spam it with memes/images ;)

Memes are like the Internet's inside jokes. People get a popular reference that people who don't frequent the Internet have no idea of.

So, basically Earthysun is Jesus's only son.

Don't turn this into a funny pictures thread ok guys?

I like meme's. It's kind of cool how the whole internet community can recognize a completely random item and turn it into a part of the internet culture. The Rick Roll has got to be the most publicized meme to date. They do get old, but when you come across a new one they can be quite entertaining.

I really like the Philosorapter and the Courage Wolf (or w/e his name is) meme's.

Some of them are lame (over 9000), but those with an actual funny/troll story are usually good (Rickroll until it starts getting annoying, you fail it/a winner is you). Having something to say that everyone will recognize is good though like I accidentally, inb4, WHARRGARBL...

inb4meme

oh nvm

:P

@Gauper: Yeah, inside jokes.

[Edit] It's just a matter of not using them too much and looking like a tryhard.

Matt: You want that eh? You want everything good for you. You want everything that's--falls off garbage can

Camera guy: Whoa, haha, are you okay dude?

Matt: You want anything funny that happens, don't you?

Camera guy: still laughing

Matt: You want the funny shit that happens here and there, you think it comes out of your [bleep]ing [wagon] pushes garbage can down, don't you? You think it's funny? It comes out of here! running towards Camera guy

Camera guy: runs away still laughing

Matt: You think the funny comes out of your mother[bleep]ing creativity? Comes out of Satan, mother[bleep]er! nn--ngh! pushes Camera guy down

Camera guy: Hoooholy [bleep]!

Matt: FUNNY ISN'T REAL! FUNNY ISN'T REAL!

Most of them get old after the first few times (the game/mudkips/9000), but I still think the original content ones are great. I still like the yo dawg ones and the animals with phrases one, like kcdragon mentioned. My favorite's the socially awkward penguin. :P

I agree, those ones do have comical value to them. It's the ones that have nothing else to offer except for the fact that they are memes that get to me, such as Mudkips.

Memes are awesome, just as long as they're not forced. Going onto 4chan and posting some random phrase off the top of your head over and over again is just stupid. Memes are funnier when they form naturally.

I'm on a boat, the game, crap like that is washing into my school.

IS STUPID.

Anyways, I don't much care for memes either. They don't really irritate me too much, though.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

The game is a part of my life now. Whenever I think about the game I have to say I lost the game. It bugs me if I don't say it.

Since I was reminded of it, I lost the game.

I enjoy memes, I think they are an important part of internet culture. Inside jokes, that can sometimes be funny. Original content memes are the funniest - things like Yo Dawg crack me up. But I think of memes as what happens when you shove a million people together in a room and tell them to do whatever they want. The internet is very much like a social experiment.

Meme's online aren't funny to me anymore. And I overuse them a lot to be honest.

Now when someone slips in a meme in casual conversation, I tend to be amused. Especially in larger groups where you can tell who caught it and who has no idea whats going on.

Oh, and I don't mean the meme's everyone knows like mudkips and such.

I liked the Tip.It OT meme.

That came out of a serious thread, and filled everyones signatures. It was pretty awesome.

So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth,

These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf,

Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in,

Cos you can make a difference, you can change everything,

Just let your dreams be your pilot, your imagination your fuel,

Tear up the book and write your own damn rules,

Use all that heart, hope and soul that you've got,

And the love and the rage that you feel in your gut,

And realise that the other world that you're always looking for,

Lies right here in front of us, just outside this door,

And it's up to you to go out there and paint the canvas,

After all, you were put on the earth to do this,

So shine your light so bright that all can see,

Take pride in being whoever the [bleep] you want to be.

Memes, like all other references, inside jokes, and puns, are only funny when placed in the correct moment. Correct and Moment being the keywords here. Most internet folks have the creativity of an ant and plaster it everywhere in hopes to be funny. Rather, if you put it just right, it's funny.

I liked the Tip.It OT meme.

You mean the glass eating? :P
