Dracion1
Just started reading Dune by Frank Herbert. Classic Sci-Fi that I just haven't gotten round to reading until now  Also got Matter by Ian M Banks, I've read a few of his books before which I've liked quite a bit. If anyone's got some good Sci-Fi recommendations, I'd like to hear them. I've read a lot of the popular authors, but if anyone knows of anything that's good but not as renown I'd like to know. Thanks :ugeek: "In the beginning, the universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move." Nom
I just finished The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Picked it up because of the seemingly universal accolades. I enjoyed it but I don't think it deserves the huge amount of hype. The writing was mediocre to bad at times and the female "lead" is FRIGGIN' ANNOYING. So many fantasy authors seem to know zilch about women . . . looking at you, Robert Jordan. Now on to Terry Pratchett's Reaper Man.
re4p3r1
just finished Christ Versus Arizona by Camilo Jose Cela. Wow, amazing book. if you guys love experimental stuff give this book a read.
meol
Can anyone recommend something more along the lines of political fiction, like 1984 or Animal Farm? Atlas Shrugged sounds like a nice idea (if maybe on the other side). Anything else? This signature is intentionally left blank.
Moogel
I don't know why I haven't thought of this thread by now, since I love reading a good book, or two  . Anyways, I'm about three-quarters of the way into "Daemons are Forever" by Simon R. Green. It's wonderful, and has never lost my interest. I think it's the second in the series, but that doesn't matter. I started reading this book since I found it randomly in the book store, and I had all the story I needed. It's not like in Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings where you have to read all of the previous books to understand the story fully. Also, I suggest the book "Tunnels" by Brian Williams. The ending is a bit dissapointing, since the authors PLANNED on a sequel <_< but, whatever. This feels exceptional on my under-carriage.

Atlas Shrugged sounds like a nice idea (if maybe on the other side). Anything else? Depends how far back you want to go, I suppose. Some of the best fiction of that kind came from Russian writers during times of social and political change (emancipation of the serfs, Russian nihilist movement). If that kind of thing interests you then I would suggest both Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev and Devils by Dostoevsky. The issues tackled go far deeper than politics of course. They're two of the best novels I've ever read. La lune ne garde aucune rancune.
Denith
Maybe some Tom Clancy meol. Except wait.. he doesn't write allegories or dystopian novels... try The Time Machine or Brave New World Wtf are the books about, L. Fictional? Non fictional? I loooooooooooooooooooooooooooove ancient Egyptian culture, though bizarrely pyramids bore me beyond tears. Light fantasy. Imagine Douglas Adams writing fairy tales (well... just minus a little bit of the sci fi and more of the fantasy). Not all of Terry Pratchett's Discworld stuff takes place in the Egyptian themed country of his universe though.

Just spinoffs to the Malloreon/Belgariad series, and some stand-alones. Also, starting on the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, by Stephen R. Donaldson. Got the FIrst Chronicles (3 books). Honestly. I'm stuck on like page 200 of the history book. I only read it at work when I'm bored so... However I learned the name of an indonesian island. Well and I read a 600 page book on the brain over december. But besides that it's been like 3 years. I have all the 99s, and have been playing since 2001. 1_man_army
Have anyone read "Master and Margarita" by russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov. It's amazing novel. So mysterious and dark, with a lot of philosophic I haven't yet but it's been sitting in my Amazon wishlist for over 6 months now. Glad to see that you enjoyed it, I might get round to ordering it now. EmEss
Just finished reading Battle Royale Novel... I don't know why but the best things to read, I find, are either Shakespeare or Novels from other countries which have been translated... I hate to say it but I think most literature nowadays fall into two categories; really really dull or really really crap *coughtwilightcough* Just look at what the most famous book of the past two years is; TWILIGHT. Harry Potter is like... the only good thing out recently, and that just ended!!! #-o But yeah, Battle Royale... I still have to finish Genesis(Undone to USA) by Karin Slaughter. Rach's the Bern to my Lambda, Req's the Erika to Rach's Bern. It works.

Harakiri
Just finished reading Battle Royale Novel... I enjoyed it. I found the part at the lighthouse to be a bit too long but I found the ending to be very suspenseful. The "Don't trust anyone" moral of the story really played amazingly into the suspense of the final pages. Reading Going Postal by Terry Pratchett. It's kind of funny. I like the dialogues between the characters, those are very good.
EmEss
]I enjoyed it. I found the part at the lighthouse to be a bit too long but I found the ending to be very suspenseful. The "Don't trust anyone" moral of the story really played amazingly into the suspense of the final pages. The Lighthouse was my favourite part, how their friendship is immediately unravelled and they all turn on each other. In both the Manga and the Film, that was my favourite part as well. Finished genesis... I really did not like the conclusion of it. I was hoping for a more interesting reason... Oh well. Rach's the Bern to my Lambda, Req's the Erika to Rach's Bern. It works.
blakdragon39
Wheel of Time is definitely my favourite series. I'm reading it for the third time, so I remember what has happened and can read the books Brandon Sanderson is writing. The release date for the next book is November 13 or something? I'm excited! Only one more book after that one to draw the epic series to an end. :) Robert Jordan tells a wonderful story. :D Brandon Sanderson is supposed to be starting a series too, which looks interesting. After I finish with my very long reading list I'll look into them. :) Someone on the thread mentioned Graceling. I read that book, and it was pretty good. I recently bought The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and the other two books in the trilogy. Once I'm done with the WoT I'll be reading them! I'm also waiting on Christopher Paolini to and hurry up and finish the damn Inheritance cycle. There was supposed to be 3 books, but then he decided it was too long, so now there'll be a fourth book. I've been checking the Eragon website periodically over the last couple of years, and STILL NO NEWS WHATSOEVER. He's really taking his time. EDIT: In fact I just looked at the website. The last time it was updated was march 2009... Come on now.
