Where you live ...

Hey, guys. Just a question/topic that I've been thinking about for some time know.

Do you like where you live ? Do you like your suburb, your town, your city or even your country ? What don't you like about it, and what would you change ? If you weren't living where you're living now, where would you live, or where would you like to live ?

Subsequently, has your physical place in the world had any effect on how/ what you think of others, and of yourself ?

Thanks,

I live in Australia, semi-rural NSW north-west of Sydney. Nice place, we got animals, plenty of land etc. It makes me dislike the city somewhat though, I enjoy the open+uneven terrain. I don't plan on moving away any time soon.

Can't really say if the way i think of others/myself is influenced by my environment, I'd say its more influenced by my experience. I've been to a few other countries, interestingly i feel most at home around the mountains of Siciliy (place of my genetic heritage), more-so than my actual home.

There is undeniably a vast separation of paradigm between countries of the world, I see this as a bad thing.

Not really.

We live about 25km from the town I go to school in, and the bus doesn't pass by our house so I have to get to school very early. I also get home late which cuts the school day short. aving my drivers liscence also means visiting friends is full reliant on parants and such as well. Also slow internet and ba dconneciton for games.

On the positive its a nice place, great weather.

I live roughly between brisbane and the gold coast, in a medium size suburb.

Short drive to the city, coast, rural area and the mountain + rain forest. Right in the middle of everything.

Happy where I am

Australia, west of Sydney. Everyone in the town seems to hate the place, my friends and I often joke about these attitudes. But yeah, I have the option to move to a bigger town at any time, but I haven't taken it yet, so hey, something must be decent about the place. In all seriousness, where I live, despite it's lack of decent gaming shops, is good enough.

I live in a small town in California. There are only about 4000-5000 people - it's the kind of place where you grow up going to school with all the kids your age who live in that town, where you know everyone and everyone knows you. It's an absolutely gorgeous town with multiple "open space reserves" and countless hiking trails. Unlike in the cities, you can actually see the stars at night, which is truly amazing in August, which is a month known for star gazing.

Before I was able to drive, living in such a small town could be frustrating. The only stores within walking distance (30 minutes round trip) are a small cafe, a grocery store and a hardware store. After that you get to a 50+ minute walk round trip to get to another small cafe, another grocery store, a Round Table Pizza and a bank. At times it felt very limiting, but since my parents were very accommodating and drove me places whenever possible, it was never too much of an issue.

The only thing I might change about my town is the weather. As gorgeous as it is in spring, I've never been fond of hot weather. In summer, especially, the temperature gets far too high for my liking. So I would love it if it were a bit colder... but other than that, no complaints :) I love my town and if it weren't for the hot weather and ridiculously high prices of houses, I'd be content with living here forever.

I live in a town called Glastonbury which is in the south-west of England. If you like music, you'll of probably heard of Glastonbury Festival which the town is famous for. Like in Tripsis' town, it's where you know everyone and everyone knows you.

My complaint is that I live in a rural area that's about an hours drive from the nearest city, which actually has shops.

I live in a small village just northwest of Great Yarmouth.

It's kind of a picture of middle-class English life, which isn't a bad thing. It's quiet, the people are decent, the scenery is beautiful and it's safe. Even the Internet connections are exemplary for England here. I wouldn't trade this for anything.

Eh, crappy chav infested council house estate for me :) It's a pretty small town, but it's right next door to Bolton which is fairly large. It's also really close to Manchester, which is probably the only good thing about living here.

Tbh it's horrible, horrible, horrible. I can't wait to move away from all these idiot dolites, chavs and all the kids that have been bullying me since I can remember. I do, of course, have friends. And there some nice people, but as soon as I'm able I want to move to Manchester or Salford.

The weather is crap, the people are crap, the housing is crap...

I live just outside a town in west-central Scotland, roughly around 20-30 minutes from Glasgow and a bit more to get to Edinburgh so it's pretty handy being within roughly an hours drive of the two main cities.

The area i stay in has a few shops, post office/butchers/pub and a primary school pretty close by but the main town centre is about a half hour walk which has a good shopping centre, pubs/clubs and all the other kinds of stuff you normally find in a town centre. I enjoy it here but i reckon i'm going to either move to Glasgow after i'm done with Uni or stay in Edinburgh, where i stay when Uni is in as Edinburgh is a brilliant city.

I live in the middle of nowhere in Kentucky(US). I hate the rural area. I like the sounds and sights of the city. I want to be able to talk to my neighbor who lives 30 feet away rather than 3 miles. I would give my left one to live the city now.

Some people say the rural is peaceful and relaxing... BS. If you want to maintain interaction with people outside of your family and be able to hang out with friends besides doing tractor races, then don't move to the rural area. As soon as I finish up college, I will move to a major city.

I'd say I live in a decent area, everything I need is within walking distance. My school is 1 minute away, and my work is 15 seconds away, and most of my friends live relatively close too.

I live in a very affluent suburb in Jersey... As far as geography and weather and stuff, I like it a lot. Because of all teh wealthy peoples here, there is a very strong republican influence. It's not that I mind the small government mentality, it's the conservative that comes with it that I hate  On the rare occasions I leave my house, people call me a hippie and tell me to get a haircut and [cabbage] :/ It gets annoying after a while, I guess. The town in which I live is 88.86% white, but I don't really think that makes me racist or anything. I dunno... I guess it could be worse :/

Long story short I moved from near Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, to near Helsinki, Finland what feels like my whole life ago. Am I happy with it here? Not really.

First of all there's the language. As you can probably guess Finnish is dominant, what you may not know is that there is a minority of Swedish-speaking people, mostly the descendants of the Swedish-speaking population created when Finland was occupied by Sweden for the better part of 700 years. Finnish is horrible. I've been learning it for nine years with nearly no results. Swedish is not. I learned it fluently in a year. But Finnish dominance remains, and my most-said phrase is "Do you speak Swedish or English?".

Second of all there's the fact that I live like 30 or so km from anything, i.e. Helsinki. But that's a small complaint compared to #1.

I'm a suburbs guy living 50 miles east of Los Angeles. To the north we have 8000+ foot mountains, then a higher middle class suburbs, freeway, then middle class suburbs where I live, then lower class. (that's going from north to south). Though all the people living there go to roughly the same High school, so we have a pretty diverse student population.

As for shopping, I live about 1½ miles from a out-door mall. It's actually pretty neat as it's styled for a 40s look. I have access to almost every store available for anything. A supermarket within my "neighborhood" and several food joints nearby. We get amazing weather most of the year and have access to the entertainment centers of Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Las Vegas pretty close by. (2 hour trip to Vegas, but still)

California is an amazing place to visit and live and I would never leave it.

Hi county partner!

I'm from a village just outside of a town which is just outside of Peterborough (Cambridgeshire).

Basically, my house is roughly 1/1 and a half miles from the village which is so small all we have is a Pub, not even a shop, and the village basically consists of two roads with houses along one side of each. My house is about 7 and 3/4 miles from the nearest town in which I went to secondary school. Its almost an Idyllic location, because it is in the fens (Low-lying flatlands in the UK) you can see almost nothing but fields up until the horizon from my kitchen window. In early life it was great living there, so many adventures. My house is basically in the middle of a field, with a river running parallel to the road next to our house. So basically, it is house, lawn, road, river.

But early teen life there was horrible, and I personally blame the location which i lived in for how i have turned out, which is a very quiet and rather un-sociable guy. Being so far from town, i could rarely see friends outside of school, and as both my parents and older brother work full time jobs, i was alone for 3-5 hours after finishing school almost every day. I learned to have fun on my own and now people probably think I'm strange that i can spend so long without human contact, but my upbringing got me used to it. Safe to say though, at the time i hated living there because of it.

I like where I live, I guess. I mean, there are places I would rather live, but I'm not complaining. It's the mid-size city thing where it's not large enough to be a nationally-renowned place but it isn't (nearly at all) small enough where people could call it a small town, so thus it's "boring."

But the weather is very diverse, we get dramatically different seasons. 100 degrees out in the summer, 8 feet of snow in the winter. We get decent enough music acts to come around.

I'll probably end up moving, just because I enjoy change.

96.76% white. Oh hi.

Anyways, I like where I live. It's a pretty nice town, about 15k-17k people I'd guess, 13k in 2000. It's been voted into the top 30 best places to live in America by CNN or whatever so I guess people like it. Pretty low crime, most people who get arrested are teens on possession charges and stuff like that so it's not a big deal. Uhh, our high school is really nice, it's like 5 years old now so it's pretty new. It's pretty boring though, not to much to do inside the town, but it's pretty easy to get to places where stuff actually is. Probably pretty expensive to move here now, but my parents bought our house like 25 years ago or something like that.

The weather is amazing two out of four seasons, summer is a little hot for my tastes and winter depends on the year. It wasn't bad this year, but there are years where it's below 0(F) for the majority of the winter which isn't very fun in my opinion, but it could be far worse.

I live in the older part of town where most of the people in the area have been living there for more than 10-15 years and the houses are mostly 40 years old and older. It's a lot less "neighborhood" than the newer areas. I like where I live because I have woods behind my house that I spent so much time in as a kid. I grew up exploring the area back there, climbing trees, playing in the stream, and other stuff like that. The problem with where I live is that there aren't nearly as many kids my age around and a lot of my friends live in the new developments which are on the other side of town from me. I spent a lot of my time by myself or with my sister which probably is a small part of the reason I'm an introvert compared to people who can walk across the street and be at a friends house.

Do I like my:

City? No, too many people. I grew up in a town of 1600 or so, now live in a city of close to 400 000. I would much rather move back to my old town and commute to work every day.

Country? Yeah.

I've never really thought about where I would live if not here or where I grew up, but I'm not sure I would like living out of Canada. Maybe in parts of Europe? As for where I WOULD live, probably still Canada but out West somewhere.

Where you live has a significant influence on who you are as a person. Good or bad. Alot of times, both. I'm from the suburbs, but after college I'm thinkin of moving to The Big Apple, cause the city life is the life for me. I would never move to the country, because big open spaces of nothing kinda freak me out, and I like being near crap loads of people.
