Slayer - Why do you like it?

Everywhere I go, I see people saying "slayer is pro", "train slayer", blah blah blah. And that's not only on these forums, in game too!

So I wonder, why does everyone like slayer so much? To me, its very boring, and repetitive. Its just like any other skill, so when someone says "slayer is fun, has variety", I'm thinking "has that guy ever slayed before?" It's no better than skills such as mining/ agility/ thieving in terms of repetitive grinding.

So I ask, why do you like slayer? Explain to me since I really want to know, maybe convince me to start training it again?

They mean doing 500 tasks is less grindy then killing 100k AZ's.

DK drops (solo/LS): 66 hatchets, 14 archer rings, 13 berserker rings, 17 warrior rings, 12 seerculls, 13 mud staves, 7 seers rings

QBD drops: 1 kite, 2 visages, 4 dragonbone kits, 3 effigies, lots of crossbow parts

It's not called a Compensation Longsword for nothing.

I've sent a 12k combat mission to have Aiel assassinated (poor bastard isn't even Pincers-tier difficulty).

I disagree, it has tons of variety. While it's still repetitive as hell, it has tons more than other skills as far as variation goes.

Gear and inventory changes for almost every task, you manage kills/prayers/cannoning, there's many chances to get decent/rare drops. And (as mentioned above) you also get combat exp, in addition to slayer.

Myself, I don't like slayer for the same reason I don't like hunter (competing for spots). I can see why many people enjoy it though.

1st off: It is fun and it has variety. Most people hit the point of "wtf am I doing?!" at around your level. At least I did. =p

2nd: The loot.... Loot.

The challenge of a mistake is not to avoid it. The challenge of a mistake is dealing with the outcome.

lately i havent been in the mood for slayer but i origiaonly liked it cuz it was an efficient way to train combat and hit higher and get drops unexpectedly

it was fun getting 99 cuz it was a slow skill that took time to get instead of most 99s that get done pretty quick.

u get a damage bonus over camping monsters and most monsters arent worth it to camp

I like slayer because it used to be a mission impossible. That is to ever reach 99 slayer. However, changes to the skill actually led to reaching 99 slayer after starting training it when in came out in january 2005. It actually did take me 5 years to reach 99 slayer.

Slayer gave me something to do that could be broken down in short sessions. I don't always play for very long. And it helped me increase my other stats. It gave me a steady income. It gave me knowledge of the game.

I found it fun to level slayer.

But eventually I reached 99 slayer this year and I don't do it much any more. I never even gotten a junglewyrm task yet.

I'm not so fond of slayer any more because it seems to have turned into one of those efficiency skills. If you are not aiming at maximum efficiency you are a noob. But this is also true for all other skills nowadays.

And maybe slayer has gotten a little bit too easy. It kind of lost its appeal because of that.

simple, it trains every combat related skill at once while accomplishing an addition skill, it also gives good money, has more variety, and most slaye spots are less crowded than traditional training spots

also at a more in deapth look is the "wasted xp"

if you go max combat but have like 70 slayer, well eventualy some day youll want to get 99 salyer, so to do that ull have to go and max combat all over again and do it a 2nd time, where if you had just slayed the first time around its half the work to max skills

Training Slayer makes training combat skills less boring with a little variation and you get those free total lvls from it

And being able to kill all those monsters that you can't kill without Slayer is an added bonus to it.

There is no way you can say that Slayer is as boring/repetitive as other skills like mining, fletching, whatever. In combat skills, there's always an element of surprise - i.e. the drops are different every time.. this is unlike any other skill where the results are always the same, so I would disagree with you in saying slayer is boring... But I guess it all depends on the person.

Slayer is no way as repetetive as other skills.

Mining or w/e you do the same exact thing to get hundreds of k of ore or w/e for exp

Slayer every 100 - 200 monsters (on average) you go somewhere else face a new setup and method of killing.

Plus in training slayer you get decent profit from loot

And you also gain xp across hp, ranged, mage, attack, str and def (which ones precisely are subject to how you tackle monsters)

I like the extra boosts you can get by the slayer helm and kuradal's ring. People who camp abbies can hit perhaps up to 500. I can hit up to 610 on task, and get insane rates of melee xp/h. Next, there is the variety, and the fact that it can be broken up task per task.

Completely agree.

Plus you can actually be 'good' at slayer by putting some thought into it and paying attention etc.

Also, what use do melee stats really have anyway? I never use them except for slayer, I guess it would be useful to have max melees for boss hunting or something but to camp at armoured zombies for aaaaages just for that?

As mentioned, while it is repetitive, it's nowhere near as repetitive as other skills. Training on, say, Abyssal Demons for an hour and then moving on to Gargoyles, then something else is way more interesting than spending hours killing AZs. You also get drops and access to new monsters, and like Wantmyar said, free total levels. :P

Maybe now I look noobish with my 97 slayer, but what is AZ?

Just like with any skill there is a goal associated with it. And as Littleboy pointed out, you can also get some melee milestones with it as well. Really most used way to get XP past 99.

I think most people find that while training Slayer, they are accomplishing something.

Once you hit 90+ stats, its going to take a while to get a single level. If your mindlessly grinding a few thousand monsters, it'll bore you. Slayer allows you to see more level ups, and loot. While the loot isin't good, its refreshing to see a nice drop once in a while.

I like slayer because slayer is meant to be liked. Just like every other aspect of this game.

Hmm, the bonus from slayer helm is a good point. And I guess it is training at least 2 skills at once. But it isn't that fast even if you add it all together. And there are bound to be times when you get bad tasks. For example, I just keep getting waterfiend tasks, 199 of them on my last one, and I stopped. I know wfs are good for charms, but its so slow haha.

Does anyone think it has a reason about slayer being "pro"? I dunno, sometimes I feel there are people who train it just to be pro, just like how some people get 99 fletch/cook just to have a 99.
