Accents

Featured Replies

I've seen this kind of thread done elsewhere before and thought it'd be quite cool to hear what you all sound like.

All you need to do is go to http://vocaroo.com/ and record yourself speaking. If you're stuck for something to say, here's a few lines from a wiki article:

[hide]As human beings spread out into isolated communities, stresses and peculiarities develop. Over time these can develop into identifiable accents. In North America, the interaction of people from many ethnic backgrounds contributed to the formation of the different varieties of North American accents. It is difficult to measure or predict how long it takes an accent to formulate. Accents in the USA, Canada and Australia, for example, developed from the combinations of different accents and languages in various societies, and the effect of this on the various pronunciations of the British settlers, yet North American accents remain more distant, either as a result of time or of external or "foreign" linguistic interaction, such as the Italian accent.[/hide]

And to give this a little more discussion, what are your favourite/least favourite accents? Do you like the accent you have?

I'll get mine recorded once I get this mic sorted out.

Somehow the bitrate which the service saves the sound in is very low, so it sounds very critty, not my mics fault to your acknowledge ;-)

I have a Western Pennsylvanian accent, which is apparently very noticeable.

I've learned that people from my side of Cincinnati tend to draw out our O's into ohh. So instead of "home" we say something like h-oh-me. It's difficult to explain because I can't tell the difference by ear. All of my out of town floormates can tell though.

Oh, and warsh instead of wash. That one drives me insane.

I like the northeast cities accents: Philly, Jeresy, Boston.

I catch myself talking with a Boston accent sometimes. Might record later.

Had to use the crappy built-in mic so excuse the quality and the odd sound right at the start.

I also ran the text through Google Translate and translated it into my strange moon-language. It was difficult to hold back the laughter, as it made absolutely no sense.

Why can't the Big Bang be done by the hand of God?

It could have, but it is next to impossible because it also could have been caused by the flying spaghetti monster, or one of the other infinite number of deity possibilities.

I can speak English quite well, but when I'm nervous, I speak English it a generic Finnish accent (the stress always on the first syllable, th -> t, etc. and sounds much "rougher"). I could record it some day.

I have a Minnesoooooootan accent. And I say "oh ya" a lot too. I'm without microphone, though so you're all going to have to trust me on it :shades:

Meh, I have an (Non Dublin) Eastern Irish Accent. I don't really like it after hearing myself. But, link.

You've just inspired me to Google Translate it into Japanese and read that. It's gonna be awkward as [bleep] because I've not spoken it out loud in months but it might be funny or something like that. I guess.

http://vocaroo.com/?media=vWMXJ1OKwKMnys1IW Here you go. It's hilarious and doesn't make any kind of grammatical sense, but I did it. I hope it makes some of you non-native English speakers more comfortable (I felt it was fair!).

California girl here :P Maybe I'll record something later but I'm a bit pressed for time right now.
