They Killed Kenny...Uh, I Mean Cooking!

First of all, I've never watched South Park...the phrase just fit into my title. :P

Runescape, as we all know, is rapidly changing. With constant updates, certain things are bound to be outdated, including skills. My question to you is simple: What update(s) do you think "killed" certain skills?

Personally, I think the the Menaphie update (and later the Pyramid Plunder update) ruined theiving by making it too easy to level. Now any good updates to the skill will require an ourageously high level (This section of my post is dedicated to Esper_Jones).

Smithing was devalued by not keeping up with the dragon and barrows armors and the availablility of rune armors from treasure trails.

Crafting simply didn't have any consumable items (excluding battlestaves and bowstrings) and simply made it almost useless as a result.

Firemaking was ruined when it was first released...although the Splitbark Armor has improved its standings slightly.

Ranging....can be debated. Some people believe that the release of Desert Treasure and the DDS have off-set the triangle. I'm only 70 ranging, so I can't make a good judgement.

Runecrafting was obviously hindered by the Pure Essence update....although it probably hurt f2p'ers the most. However, if a 91+ runecrafter makes nats and buys pure essence, he will actually make more money now than before the update. Go figure. :?

Cooking was really hindered by the "Cook X" function, for obvious reasons...

Agility, fishing, and mining...hmm...nothing I can think of.

Etc, etc...

Anyways, what is your opinion?

P.S.: Whoever uses the :?: or :!: emoticons?

Sorry Rhino, but I don't think any updates have really killed a skill. They generally are improvements, personally I like it when a skill becomes a little bit easier, helps my total skill levels

I'm sure SOMEONE will argue that RS2 ruined Runescape but I AM NOT saying that.

I think the farming skill, in itself, was useful, yet stupid. First off, plants take forever to grow, and xp is not that easy to gain.

Cook X made it better for training, but ruined it for those of us who got to our high cooking levels by clicking over and over again. They are making this game easier and easier -.-

I agree that firemaking was ruined. I don't really see a point in it at all, at least not for f2p.

Crafting is useful in some ways, because you can make range armor, some mage stuff, etc. Although the extent is limited.

Smithing isn't that bad. The only problem is that too really make money, you need really high levels, or lots and lots of ore.

Currently P2P.

I don't want the world to see me, 'cause I don't think that they'd understand.

No matter what an update does to a skill, a skill will never die. There will always be at least ONE person who uses or enjoys that skill. The question is practically untrue, as skills can be hurt but never die.

DT didnt kill rangers, the dds did. -.- You can still range through a ice barrage or watever. And with the dds you have 4 specs that hit 8 times. With the mage short, only 1 spec that hits 2 times.....

Stop complaining and either play the game or quit, might sound harsh, but if you think everything is being killed, then play another game.

Harsh, I know, flaming...perhaps, but I'm in a bad, bad mood today.

Drops: Barrows: 60+ DK: 4... Dragon: 60+ Whips: 2... GWD: 0...ouch!

Main Goal: 2000 total with no 99's

I'm sure SOMEONE will argue that RS2 ruined Runescape but I AM NOT saying that.

However, I am! , ah well, what can you do, rs2 is supposedly a good game too, right? right? *silence*

RS2 ruined RuneScape if you like poorly made 2D characters akwardly placed in a 3D background.

The only one I can think of that truely ruined a skill was the mere fact that they ignored range for such a long time. Meh; it was intended to be a support skill, so I guess it'll be forever a support skill.

Lol, I rarely do thieving, but I know what you mean about Esper.

I was present at his 99 thieving celebration. :)

I personally am glad that the secartures came out for farming. I dont really think that harmed farming exp much. Also to all those that say farming takes too long, well my friend, its the perfect skill to train when you dont get much time devoted to runescape. The xp grows while you work. I love it :!:

In your point of view, killing a skill=making it easy to level...or so it seems with cooking.

Cooking was killed because of cook-x?...who cares if their are more people with 99 cooking...the skill itself is hardly profitable, as much as it can maybe just save you money.

Theiving...how did pyramid plunder kill theiving...it gave the skill a better use in rs2...if anything, it's helped it.

like many have said, skills dont die...they may suffer a beating, but they won't die....and in most of your examples, its things that have made the skill better

how do you manage to conclude that 91 rcers make more cash after the pure ess disaster?

+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Before Disaster:

Price of Essence: 30 - 40

Price of Nature Runes: 300

Low End Profit: (300*2) - (40) = 560 gp

High End Profit: (300*2) - (30) = 570 gp

Average Profit: (300*2) - (35) = 565 gp

+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

After Disaster:

Price of Pure Essence: 90 - 110

Price of Nature Runes: 330 - 350

Low End Profit: (330*2) - (110) = 550 gp

High End Profit: (350*2) - (90) = 610 gp

Average Profit: 580 gp

+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Yes, the low end profit in the "After Disaster" section is lower than that of the "Before Disaster" section, but there are a few things I should tell you.

1) The Average Profit of the "After Disaster" is higher.

2) The "Low End Profit" of the "Before Disaster" was much more reasonable than that of the "After Disaster"; in bulk amounts, essence was often 40 each right before the disaster. Today, very few people (that I know of, at least) buys essence for 110 each and sells bulk nats for only 330 each.

3) Right before the pure essence update there was a crash in the essence market...the price dropped from 50 each to 30-35 each. It was only starting to recover when the update came.

I hope that helps... 8-)

P.S.: By "die", I mean put into disuse or damaged to a certain extent by the updates, not completely obliterated. And yes, making a skill too easy to level is killing it--it only makes the skill more like firemaking. I would rather have it hard to level and have good rewards than be easy to level and then wonder a little bit why you did it. I should know; 80 firemaking...
