If you have any criticism, please make sure it's constructive! :D Are You "Addicted" to RuneScape? The Editor We've all seen this question asked on various forums over the years. It's often asked about other games too, so RuneScape has no need to feel special! However, as it comes up fairly regularly, I thought it would be worth taking... NJE03
I think to some extent most people who play regularly are somewhat addicted. Good article. shadowbot
"Even a determination to make it to the front page of the high scores table, isn't necessarily an unhealthy obsession. As long as you don't play RuneScape to the total exclusion of every thing else, you'll probably get over it. " --------------------------- Unfortunately these days, playing runescape to the total exclusion of everything else is pretty much the only way to make it to the front page of the high scores. Bobbington
It's intresting for me. I would not like to say that I'm addicted or obesssed with the game, although yes..... I do play more than I should (or I did anyway, not really been on that much for a few weeks). When you talk about playing rather than doing school work. I have to make a confession, my uni work does suffer at the hands of this game. BUT I dont thinks that because I am obsessed with the game. I have always had a low work ethic, i will find an excuse not to do my work, and this has been the same even before I tarted playing a few years back. Its a result of a personality flaw rather than obsession (and no that personality flaw is not obsession :P). I will never say no to friends so that i can play games, In fact I dont think my firends even know I play...... i like to keep the two things seperate. When i'm ingame the real life things are no longer there, If I had real life friends playing...... It would not be the same. The game for me is a way to switch off. Lanze_eriee
i enjoyed todays article, i am interested in the phsychological affects of video games and have written several term papers in this general topic so i was glad to see an article like this. i must say for me the level of obssesion varies on a day to day basis some days i don't play runescape at all and some days are completely different. recently i have hit a few of those days where i stay up all night playing runescape and ended up not going to class the next day and sometimes i didn't even go to work " huh huh i was sick *cough*" lol it saddens me to think of it that way but as i see it i love runescape and since i can't go to turnements for a card game i used to rule at it has become my primary source of fun and respect, i am not good at a lot of things but runescape i excell at and ppl in game actually respect me and my opinion. well im off to post in the runescape forums now, kudos on the article
dante1918
very nice =D> ive been obsessed before (not with runescape) and its not nice to look back over the year and realize what̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s been brought about because of your obsession. one minor disagreement and that̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s to do with the whole school work thing. i wouldn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t say neglecting your homework is a sign of obsession i remember in my day i would put it off for anything... tv, music, walking the dog, hanging out withy friends... anything lol. just because some people may think that runescape is more fun than buckling down to work doesn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t mean their obsessed just that they have a tendency to procrastinate. Oh and on the subject of calling in a sick day because of an update, if it̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s a good one I don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t see a problem after all I'm calling one in on Monday because I̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢m anticipating a nasty hangover. Does that mean I have an obsession with drinking? No because I don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t do it every Monday and as long as you don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t call one in every update what̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s the problem? lol ~1733rd person to 99 fishing. gildogg
In regards to the DYK about Tears of Guthix... It only tells you how many days, when it gets down to that day it doesn't give you hours:minutes, it just says later... I made a suggestion in the Runescape forums and was flamed by a few people so I let it drop, but it would be very helpful to know that later = 6 hours and 15 minutes.... reaper88888
Hmm.... I'd say that RS is only a problem when it intereferes with real life, like you said, calling in sick, not sleeping, not feeding pets(or children!). Excellent as usual. :) PS: As for reading, it is good for you....as long as you don't just read sci-fi/fantasy like me.... : There is no meaning or truth in life but that which we create for ourselves. Kenshinjapan
Your were pretty much right except for one thing in my opinion. Where you say you are obsessed when you turn down your friends to go to the movies etc. 1.None of my friends can accept I play rs (all play W0W(more like BOO \ )) 2.I'm jut a reserved person that would rather be by myself than with a whole group of idiots rambling on about nothing . Still was a pretty good read, I liked it :) . YOU! ATTEND TET EVENTS! CLICK HERE!

Celestrana
I agree with The Editor that it is more appropriate to call it an obsession instead of an addiction. I suppose I'll have to consider myself partly obsessed with RS since I sometimes play till 1AM on a weeknight and 2AM on weekends. Why am I only "partly" and not "fully" obsessed? At least I have enough self control to do/finish my chores around the house before I start playing, especially on the weekends. I occassionally go out with friends to a movie and all that lovely stuff. Enough about myself... An addiction, according to the definitions from the article, implies that the user is in an euphoric state (they're happy/high). An obsession on the other hand, does not imply an euphoric state. When you're playing you can sometimes die from making a mistake while you're in a tough battle etc and this sets you back. An obsessed player would probably react by swearing profusely either in their room or through public chat. After blowing off steam, they would go full throttle to regain their lost items and possibly lose sleep in the process. An unobsessed player (is that even a real word?) would just shrug off the loss and continue playing at their regular pace and slowly regain their items. There's my two-cents. Zarfay
hmm during it i felt i was addicted because you said it doesn't matter about "i spend N hours playing" but then when you talked about excluding the out side world i shifted in my seat

michaelwg
glad u finally adressed the obsession problem. i dont find that im obsessed, but i definitly play more than i should. the first idea he states pretty much sums it up, that a human will do watever he has to to seek happiness or pleasure or w\e. i live across town from all my freinds and i find reading, rs, tv or basketball all i can do to entertain myself, and rs seems to be the one that keeps me the most happy, so thats just wat i do. :) ps my in game name is "Flyingfalco0". chats always on, and im going for 99 theiving, if u got any words of motivation, lemme know. currently 83 :)
