  1. I think the general consensus is that intels are better, but not necessarily better 'bang for your buck'. At higher tiers you should definitely be looking towards intel.
  2. Also, this can be expected if it's an issue with the Windows installation. Why did i not think of this >.> Depending on the problem your data may or may not be lost. As nyo said, see if you can copy files from the hdd onto the ubuntu usb. If that works it just means the installation of windows is messed up - back up, wipe and reinstall. If you cant do this then your data is pretty much lost (you may be able to get people to manually extract data but it is expensive and not really worth it).
  3. Booting Ubuntu from a CD worked, I'm posting this from my laptop right now. Now I'm not sure what's wrong with windows... Then it seems to be a problem with the hard disk. Hard disks are easily replaceable and aren't too expensive, you just need to look into getting another 2.5inch model. Does the hard disk make a lot of noise? If you want to further single out the hard drive as the problem, take it out of your laptop (its normally held into the chassis with a couple of screws) and put it in your desktop (unplug your existing hard drive and plug the same cables into your laptop hard drive). If its a problem with your hard drive, windows still wont boot up. Booting a laptop version of windows on a desktop did produce weird results when i tried it though o.O
  4. Try creating a live disk/usb of a Linux distro, eg ubuntu. There are instructions here. Stick it in your DVD drive to see if you can boot from there.
  5. Adblock plus all the way. Fastest fox is good. it's quite hard to explain but have a look at it and you'll see. helps quite a lot, but seems to be a tad buggy.
  6. Probably Peter will have to answer the following... Isn't there a way to leave the forums online at the same time while a script does all the dirty work? ~D. V. "Why offline when you might be able to run simultaneously?" Devnull I highly doubt this is possible. Editing loads of forum posts will mean that they HAVE to be offline, and taking random threads on and offline would be incredibly disruptive. A majority of the concerned threads are no longer active, and stickys and such I assume have been manually cleared up. There's no point seeing as it's pretty rare to run into a thread with such spacing. Regardless of that, it would take either too many man-hours or a week of no forums for such a tiny problem. Doesn't seem justified to me.
  7. This. It's useful also to have a file browser, and I'm not sure about the quality of the default internet browser on your phone but Dolphin Browser HD is very good - kinda similar to chrome. Even if you don't like chrome give it a try. X-construct is a fun physics-ish game.
  8. Hmm I guess that would work but it might look a bit odd on the deflection skin. Is the colouring for the syntax highlighting generic across all of the skins? That could pose a problem and if so it would indeed just be easier to change the background colour.
  9. That email looks phishy (see what I did there?)
  10. First off, I'm pretty sure this has been discussed already, but I've had a quick look and can't find the previous topic. The text within the code tags on the deflection skin is incredibly hard to read, I have to highlight it in order to make any sense of it. [hide=Screenie][/hide] I wonder if some of the colours, black and blue mostly, could be changed to be more legible? Thanks. edit: Oh and out of interest, what language does the syntax highlighting apply to? Seems to look good with java.
  11. I'm half expecting the next newspost to be 'Great news guys, we sold the company to a large RWT store!'
  12. Replacing the HDD or reformatting would get the same end result for a fraction of the price, unless you have a particularly old system.
  13. We've been through this before I seem to recall. They cost more than an identical windows laptop. If you are going to try to tell me that macs are better value for money than pc's then it is simply not worth debating. OT: [hide=advice] 500GB has no advantage over a 250GB HDD apart from simply the amount of space. So long as you get a 7200RPM drive and it has a reasonable amount of cache, preferably 32 or 64MB, then they're all identical. I'd recommend getting at least 500GB simply because you only have 50GB left and the price difference is perhaps $10. I have no experience with an SSD but apparently they are the bomb. If you can afford one - get one, but you should easily be able to live off a single 7200RPM drive - that's what the vast majority of people do. If you aren't too fussed about boot times, wait for SSD prices to come down and get one then. 4GB is standard and what most people run on. 8GB is the tier above, but so long as you get 2x2GB sticks for your 4GB RAM, if you feel the need you can easily buy another pair of RAM sticks to get your total up to 8GB. It's not worth buying 4GB extra then finding you never use it. Remember to install 64 bit Windows! Get one you like the physical look of, and make sure it has plenty of fans. Cable management is good but not necessary. If you find one you like we can give you some advice. Key thing with the PSU - DON'T GO FOR CHEAP ONES. They are literally too good to be true. They are sub-par quality and they are very very unreliable. When (not if) they blow, they can damage your entire system and break all of your parts. Do not skimp on this at all. 5770 is currently one of the best price/performance ratio cards in the market. I'm not sure how future-proof it is though - that card has been around for a while. Also, I'm not sure what kind of quality you will get with dual monitors. I know my 5850 handles dual monitors fine. I can't claim to know lots about GFx cards though. i5 2500k is a beast of a CPU. If you get this, I'd advise an aftermarket cooler in order that you can overclock it, which is very easy to do. The i7 2600k is more expensive, but much better due to hyperthreading. Don't think you're getting a bad CPU if you get a 2500k though, you are most definitely not. Stay way clear of AMD. Make sure you have the correct socket for the CPU you're getting and it has DDR3 slots for RAM. Expensive is generally better, even if specs look identical. Asus is a good brand, they do some good 1155 socket (Sandy Bridge socket, ie. i5 2500k/i7 2600k) motherboards. Cooling is generally dependent on the case and the airflow. Most cases come with spare fan slots and it's always good to fill them - fans are cheap. CPU cooling is highly recommended for an i5 2500k build, that thing is really easy to overclock, but without good cooling it can get quite hot. I couldn't give you a good CPU cooler off the top of my head, sorry.[/hide]
  14. I like the idea - desktops are much more value for money and easier to work with. Make sure you think about getting a netbook though - they are often small thus have small keyboards, and even I find them quite difficult to type well on. Depending on budget you may be better off getting a good laptop rather than a mediocre desktop and netbook. Then you wouldn't have the headache of transferring files between the two. Judging by your first post you want to keep budget as low as possible, thus stay away from anything Apple. I can't vouch for the solidarity of their builds, although they do look pretty good, but I would stick with a windows laptop in order to get better value for money. This, I think.
  15. Sounds like a hardware problem I think. Check the inside of your case - is it very dusty? Just something to check.
  16. Good to see you got the problem fixed. How did you fix it in the end? And having 4 posts in a row isn't great, there is an edit button that you can use so you don't have to post after yourself again and again ;)

    Today...

Proud to say I sat at home playing minecraft all day. After 2 weeks of working for exams every day, it's all over and I can go back to my life of doing nothing :D At least, until Y11, where it goes downhill with mocks and GCSES...
  18. Yeah the evil thing won't work, some past and current TET people are evil incarnate. Good luck to all that are applying, I can promise you that TET is a whole lot of fun. It's only the leaders that have evil tendencies. We tolerate it :P
  19. Old from me :) All of them are excellent though, tricky to decide.
  20. Nope, should've mentioned.
  21. Hmm.. I presume other games run absolutely fine? Do you have any other computers to see if you can play rs on them?
  22. Can't get youtube videos to play in Firefox 4.0.1 with latest flash player (reinstalled it a couple of days ago) but videos work in google chrome. What's strange is that normal videos won't work in firefox, but videos in the 'Catch up on the lastest TV' section will. I have no idea while that is. When watching a normal video I get an errror "An error occurred. Please try again later". I've tried reinstalling firefox but to no avail. I guess I could try again. Running Windows 7 x64 on a 5850 by the way, but I doubt it's a graphics error. I'm stumped - does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers [hide=Youtube debug info]screenh=900&el=detailpage&playerw=640&playerh=390&csipt=wwad&fexp=907060%2C913300&scoville=1&pd=0&fs=0&ptk=Demand%5FMedia&nsiempty=1&hl=en%5FUS&vid=koLVBdY5Pk2%2DLMGyA%2D4CxUIcI2rCdaKEC&erc=2&q=paintbal&referrer=http%253A%252F%252Fwww%2Eyoutube%2Ecom%252Fresults%253Fsearch%5Fquery%253Dpaintbal%2526aq%253Df&plid=AASlSNt7d1xCW05w&smoothing=1&vq=auto&debug%5FvideoId=yYIgQ8zmR7g&fmt=34&debug%5FsourceData=&debug%5FplaybackQuality=medium&h=360&w=480&sourceid=ys&debug%5FflashVersion=WIN%2010%2C3%2C181%2C22&cr=GB&debug%5Fdate=Thu%20Jun%209%2016%3A11%3A39%20GMT%2B0100%202011&cfps=0&debug%5Ferror=%5BErrorEvent%20type%3D%22error%22%20bubbles%3Dfalse%20cancelable%3Dfalse%20eventPhase%3D2%20text%3D%22NetStream%2EPlay%2EStreamNotFound%22%5D&screenw=1440[/hide] SOLUTION: Turned out to be a conflict with AdBlock Plus addon.
  23. Does the RS downloadable client let you join the game?
