Wow.. been.. probably a year since I made a topic in this board.. And probably one of very few to come now that it is the combined pit of hell.. God this combined board is getting messy :P

 

 

 

Anyway, the topic up for discussion today is.... The usefulness of the new hot keys! Since Jagex updated the game engine a couple of days ago, we can now use the following keys as shortcuts in Runescape;

 

 

 

Esc - Inventory

 

F1 - Combat options

 

F2 - Your statistics

 

F3 - Quest Journal

 

F4 - Equipped interface

 

F5 - Prayer

 

F6 - Spellbook

 

F8 - Friends list

 

F9 - Ignore list

 

F10 - Options interface

 

F11 - Emotes

 

F12 - Music Player

 

 

 

Now, the question I'm posing is does anyone find these hotkeys useful, and if so in what way?

 

Maybe it's the setup of the keyboard on my laptop, but to be perfectly honest the only hotkey that seems usable generally is the Esc Key for the Inventory as it's on the end. All the other keys seems like more trouble than actually moving your mousee over to each tab.

 

 

 

However, I'm convinced that there is some huge benifit of these shortcuts somewhere in the game, like when doing certain skills involving switching between various interface tabs, but for the life of me I can't see any, as again, I don't keep my hands over the F keys, so it'd take longer to press one of the keys than to move my mouse.

 

 

 

 

 

So, because of my desire to not miss out on this huge hidden benifit.. who's actually found a good situation to use these keys in?

 

Or are they simply quite pointless and a waste of time on Jagex's part?

i dunno, sometimes it helps, I've got a feeling it'll help when you want to use a special of a weapon then switch to another since the keys are so close... I think maybe in cw...

i agree with you, but there are some who will use them....I mean it doesn't rly effect us.

Well I use the inventory tab quite a lot- very handy.

 

 

 

Also my friend is planning on using em for fightcaves :D

I find it useful when I'm making tiaras for crafting. I can easily talk to friends and smelt at the same time. Plus it has to be handy for pkers, dkers, kqers, and kbders and probably if your dhoraking.

Yeah, the esc one is convenient.

 

 

 

And I'm sure there is some skilling use we haven't found yet.

 

 

 

And maybe if you got really good they'd help for like pking or kqing or something.

I guess switching from the prayer menu primerally right? If it isn't then please continue and explain. I'm considering going for the Fire Cape soon.. as soon as I get enough to buy Guthans.. Even at 80 something defense I get the feeling something will go wrong, and I don't want to ever have to go through those caves again..

u got it switching between prayer screen and super restores/range pots

I have yet to try it, but I think if you had a gamepad you could set some of the buttons on the pad to an F key so you can not have to move the cursor around.

 

They also revealed that the hidden lower left tab will be used. ^_^

i've been trying to use them instead of clicking(to get a feel for them) while barrowing, not really necesarry to be quick if you know what you're doing. they are usefull if you get them memorized, especially for jad.

I myself don't use them, but It would be pretty easy to use them to switch between magic and prayer interface during pking, or magic, prayer, and inv.

I don't use them. I'm happy with clicking my mouse, I'm kinda used to it.

I would rather, that instead of changing menus, the buttons did specific things.

 

For example, f1 could be 'Special attack'

 

 

 

I can see this being much more useful, also the f12 on is annoying for a fairly obvious reason.

 

 

 

Maybe having the ability to change the hot-keys to different keys for ease of use as the f(1-12) keys aren't exactly in an easily accessible place.

Eh, I plan on ignoring their existance completly. I made it three years with clicking and I never had any problems.

 

They may be useful for jad, but otherwise they have no huge advantages that I can see so far, especially not on a F2P world.

I hate them I use F12 to take Pictures for my gallery and that interferes completely with it by switching it to Music Book everytime I try to take a Pic.

Yeah hotkeys are really useful in fight caves. I still died though... I think i need something better then full rune...

I'll be honest and say that I didn't even know they existed. I swear that list wasn't there the first time I read the news...

They should have left F12 out :evil: now I can't take screenshots

Did u know, the control for run was already in the game before this update...but jagex said in the update they put control as run...

I never read the news. I didn't know they exsisted.

I don't really see a point in having them in this game. I am probably never going to use those. By this time in the game I am too used to clicking for it to be any easier to use the keys. I honestly think that clicking on the pictures is easier anyways.

 

 

 

Besides, the area of my brain that would have been used to store which of the keys opens what can be put to better use.
