Jagex - Launching two new games next years.

Featured Replies

Five years would be quite a short time, if I had just started playing the game. It's been like 4 years since I started (that much  ) but my rs-journey will come to the end soon. I will be finishing the comprehensive school next spring and honestly, who has the time to play computer games in the high school?

wtf

........... who has the time to play computer games in the high school?

Just about everyone who plays RuneScape and is in high school. Unless they do sports or Quiz Bowl etc. or w/e.

Hey guys, If you've ever wondered why "bots" became popular with runescape, think back To Ultima Online and those accounts with a mansion and a million gold sold at ebay for REAL Thousands of dollars. This is my first recollection of the greedy darker side of gaming....

Yes, before World of Warcraft, before Everquest, there was Richard Garriot's Ultima Online.

As for the future of Runescape itself: My friends say it will go on for 10 more years. I feel that 5 more years is way to long for any game's popularity.

I can't wait for losers like Zezima and anybody who joined Runescape before 2003 (when the Jagex grinch stole Christmas) have a nervous breakdown for their little obsession suddenly disappearing! :boohoo:

if you think about it. look how runescape started. very small at first and grew and was added to with updates. i figure these titles would be similar in how they grew/grow. so, dont expect a full game like runescape with a lot to do at first, more just a new mmporg that is starting out and will be updated as it goes; and will develop as its playerbase grows, that's what i'd expect but maybe they will be more complete than i expected, but i dont think so. the big thing about these games is they will probably be a similar leveling structure/addictablity features/chat systems/technologies/minigames/music etc. so that people will play it in a similar way such as runescape. anyways it's good news they're expanding and it makes sense, since they do have more capital and a fan/player base as well as great technolgies and experience. i would expect these games to be entertaining. and i wouldnt be surprised if there were f2p servers as well if not exclusively when introduced. and maybe runescape members will be able to play the beta. we'll just have to wait and see.

The original RuneScape was created by Andrew and Paul Gower. If Jagex is making a game called MechScape, there probably would be about 20-30 people working on it at least.

And for Jeff's sake, please use paragraphs.

Quite interesting the BBC did an article on Jagex :)

BTW: Is it just me, or do the graphics in those screenshots have much better graphics than the real RuneScape?

I don't recall being able to play at that resolution, with monsters having that clear textures.

There is no way that is real. Jagex most likely faked that picture. That is supposed to be in God Wars, right? I haven't been in God Wars, as I am F2P. But I was on there long enough to know Jagex could never pull such a stunt off with Java...

And two new games? Are you serious? MechScape, but what else?

If I remember right, Graardor does actually look a lot like that, I've never looked at him closely, but it seems like it.

At first when I read it, my thought was "only 5 more years? Aww, I wanted it to last forever"...Then I thought about it and realized that I'll be off to college and have other things in my life, so maybe it's not so bad after all.

it is bando's godwar main general. he looks very much like that.

not as detailed from the player pics, but its clearly the same guy.

THAT. IS. THE. SAME. AS. THE. REAL. THING!!!!!!

Jagex says that it can create 3000-polygon models. I highly doubt that General Graardor in that picture exceeds 3000 polygons.

Jagex could probably create a new game with EQ-style graphics using Java, though it would be impossible to implement them into RuneScape.

Oh, and the picture from the bestiary looks less detailed because it got blurred by MS Paint or whatever they used.

Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:

Also all those ads showing up on the F2P worlds. But they don't run those on other sites (do they?) so I guess it doesn't really count

F2P for life :D

the average player plays 22 hours?! i only play about 6 hours a week!

GESig.gif

I wonder what will happen to Runescape in 5 years.

Players do not even need to pay to play. About 100 hours of adventuring time in the Runescape world of Gielinor can be had for free. Those wanting more can subscribe for ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã3.20 (4.55 euros) per month.

I didn't know that there is a limit of how much you can play in f2p. :-k

Are you really that thick? Doesn't advertise as in Jagex doesn't advertise about Runescape, it's different from serving advertising on Runescape.

I am a tree.

All the people who talk about the picture. Yes it is a runescape pic, the only difference is that they zoomed in , vector style, wilst you ppl zoom in in paint/(bitmap/jpeg).

Have a nice day, and we talk again in 5 years :^o

Proove that if you would. Jagex said somewhere not sure where though, that there is a lot of players who are not even in school.

Most in High School, i think most are in Nuserey how mature half the population act.

I don't know if anyone has posted this but on that BBC News site, the info is a bit misleading.

It says you have to download the game and that it's a 1.3gig download!!!

We don't acctually download it like otehr games online, I mean if it was a 1,3 gig download, it would take ages to download!! People who are reading that might be put off thinking it's an accutall download.

"Runescape runs in a web browser and the whole download to get playing is 1.3 megabytes in size."

I think you will find thats what it said.

Why do I feel that Runescape has contracted a terminal disease, like, it won't affect it for a long time, but eventually it will die unnaturally early?

I appreciate that 5 years is a long time, but I really think that trying to place a life expectancy on such a great game is beyond cruel. In fact, they are fulfilling their life expectancy by predicting it in the first place. They really didn't have to do that. <.<

I think pepole are reading this wrongly. Iddison hasn't said RuneScape will definitely take a back seat in 5 years time, or that Jagex will cease development of RuneScape in 5 years time - he's offering a guarantee that RuneScape will remain their number 1 focus for at least the next 5 years. I imagine they'll keep updating and developing RS as long as it remains profitable and has a reasonable number of members.

Brings me to my other theory - Mechscape sounds like it may be similar to RS but set in the future. If this is the case, then it would more than likely use the same game engine to run - think 'Half-Life and all the third party mods that there are for that game.

Using the same engine would mean that Mechscape would only need content creation teams plus scriptwriters if they decide to use quests in it - that's assuming it will be a MMORPG - but that way they wouldn't need a huge number of people working on it, and it wouldn't take the focus off of RS development because it would be essentially another version of runescape except with a different setting and different content.

Don't you just hate it when a company gets a new Cheif Executive? They have a grand "vision for the future" and all the ways they can leave their mark on the company, but most of it is just talk...

wow, ive read every post and not 1 person seems to mention what is most likely the MAIN reason JaGex is doing this, they want to be able to make a larger scale of money. How? They say they want to implement things such as item malls, which means whoever has the biggest credit card has the best equipment/characters.

They just want to be able to make more than 5.00 a person per month.

Is ScapeRune upon us?

Lol brace yourself for uncooking!

and training your vulneranbility! :-k

Yeah...Some people just go out of their way to ruin other peoples fun.
Sounds like Jagex to me...

im curious if these new games are alike runescape :D

postedimage.png

(This is similar to one guys post) Maybe they are going to make Runescape as we know into F2P and the new game all members?

EAT DIRT!!!!!!!!

Love,

Granny

It just says "online games" that doesn't mean its an MMO. I don't believe that this Mechscape thing is going to be an MMO. I won't believe it until I see it.

Well we will have to wait and see then.

I can guerente (excuse the spelling :P) this though what ever it is in the upcoming months there are going to be so many crappy rumours your not going to know what to believe.

MMO's take ALOT to run, especially if they plan on running both games the same as they run Runescape. Updating weekly, keeping reasonable customer support. You would need 2 seperate teams and I dont think even Jagex has the financial capability to do that. My opinion is that it will be a Mech type multicombat game that is Java based, but not an MMO, more of a Quake Arena type game (basically a battle game is what I'm getting at).

Guarantee*

Wakka, even though I agree with what you are saying, Jagex are expanding their team at a phenomenal rate in my opinion, and if you were English, you would know that, during July 2006, Paul and Andrew had 27.9 Million Pounds (Around $55 US). This was because of the Sunday Times Rich List. Paul and Andrew ranked N̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâú. 6 in the Under 30 Category. By now they could have easily got to a total of 30 Million Pounds and have probably crept up to the 40 Million Pounds mark. They should have the financial capacity to hold 2 big MMORPGs, expeically since they hired the Director of PayPal (I believe), which will allow Jagex to expand well.

Also there are clues which suggest this such as mechSCAPE and runeSCAPE? I have seen some animated content of a robot, and a bit of scenery, not telling you where though, and in my opinion, it looks like a Sci-Fi sort of MMORPG.

Nobody knows what to expect, but don't be disappointed if it isn't what anyone thinks it is.

Would it be something like Star Wars or Star Trek games?

Am i the only person that hasn't heard of Mechscape?

May i ask what it is?!

OT: I don't think I'll still be playing in 5 years, but i think when ive grown up it would be cool to log on and see the message saying "you last logged in 6000 days ago" and see where u last logged out.
