RSOF poster types: Sadists, Wannabes, Ranters, etc.

Recommended Posts

We have all read the rants about people who complain excessively each time there is an update. What about other types of posters though? Let's categorize them.

Daddy Knows Best

He is firmly on the side of game developers and views them as the ultimate god-like authority on everything whose will must never be questioned. He feels emotionally attached to dev team and often comments on their "hard work" and how sorry he is that people flame devs. To him all players who complain are just crybabies or ungrateful kids who don't appreciate the effort being made for them by the game companies. He regards the game as the sole property of devs and players should be grateful that game makers allow them to play their game.

Give It Time

No matter what the complaint is, he always responds with "give it time." Even if people are dying in droves to unfair players, according to this poster all players have to do is to give it time and everything will be hunky-dorky. Due to the nature of MMORPGs, over the long run this poster is often proven right as most players will likely prove to be sufficiently addicted to the game to continue playing so eventually even the worst controversies will blow over in time.

"A Kenyan man once said to me, 'You can get used to anything.' He used to stick mice up his [wagon] for twenty bucks a time."

Wannabe Mods

These posters may be similar to the Daddy Knows Best variety but their motives are much less pure. Whether it is the official forums or a fan forum, they stick up for authority figures and are always anxious that all the rules are always followed to the letter. A common refrain of theirs is "mods should," for example "mods should lock this" or "mods should move this to rants." Another hallmark of the Wannabe Mods is their constant quoting and reminders to others of the rules.

Ranters Who Rant About Ranting

A special breed of poster who posts only because he wants people to shut up. He hates rants yet he reads them a lot and can't stay away from them so his constant pet peeve is "people who rant" even though his own posts are are as incoherent as the rants he professes to hate. Whether they realize it or not, these posters start an endless cycle of ranting. First there are ranters, then ranters who rant about ranters, then ranters who rant about those who rant about ranters, then ranters ranting about ranters who rant about those who rant about ranters, and so on. The cycle is endless and ridiculous in the extreme. They often have no sense of humor and answer seriously even the most ridiculous posts about rants because their posting time is completely taken up with ranters.

Best Update Ever

Much like stores in real life that seem to have the "best sale" or "lowest prices" every time they have a sale, for every update there are posters who love it so much they declare it the "best update ever." Whether they have been playing the game for 1 week, 1 month or 1 year, they confidently proclaim the update to be the "best ever" and thank the game developers for their genius update. Sometimes they painstakingly list each and every positive point of an update, no matter how small it is, just to emphasize why this one is the "best update ever."

The Perennial Kisser of Behinds/Bootlicker

One of the most common of posters, this one just wants to suck up to mods and game developers so he can score brownie points. Privately he may have his doubts but publicly he always makes it a point to stand up and be counted as a supporter of each update and, by extension, game developers. He likes to refer to people by their first names or nicknames even if these people have never spoken to him personally. In his mind, he views complainers as fools because complainers never get anything. He regards himself as smart because he knows game developers have the only real power in the MMORPG so he is always on the winning side.

Bow Down to Him, for He is the Great One

If a pmod, mod or game developer should post, this poster goes into raptures over him. Ecstatically going along with whatever mods or devs say, this poster's goal is to make friends or have a connection with his idols. Squeeling "omg you posted, you posted, I love you so much and this game, thank you!" like a star-struck fan, this poster only wants to love and be loved in return.

Me, Myself and I

This poster feels it is important to post that since the update or controversy doesn't involve him, he doesn't care about it. 99% of players might be affected but he wants people to know that he isn't directly troubled by it therefore it's great to be him. He admits that it might suck for other players but as long as his own playing style is untouched he is happy.

Substitute Posters

Has your training area been completely ruined by an update? There are other places. Is your character now obsolete? There are other types of characters. Are your skills now unprofitable? There are other skills. This poster has the answer to everything because to him each aspect of the game can be easily replaced by another aspect. He is the type of player who enjoys doing everything so he simply cannot understand why people whine when their favorite things are taken away. After all, there is always something else to do.

Let's See YOU Make One

This poster thinks every complaint is invalid because they were not made by a game developer. His motto is "if you can't make a better game then shut up." He likes to ask other posters if they think they can do better than challenges them to develop their own game. He doesn't even care about what the other poster's complaint is, he just thinks all complaints by non-game devs are inherently invalid.

Marquis de Sade's Brother

To the sadistic poster, human suffering is sweeter than mother's milk. The more people complain and whine, the better he likes it. Common examples of posts are titled "LMFAO, Pkers owned by update" or "Don't you just love it when nerds cry?" These posters thrive on pain and chaos. He loved riots and posts on quitting posts by saying "goodbye and good riddance." Sarcasm is his favored tool and harsh posts by other people delight him. He is the the player hater of MMORPGs. He may hate merchants, skillers, duellers, pkers, boss teams, veterans, wealthy or any other type of player, but one thing is for sure, he hates them with a vitriolic vigor. Frequently he hates them because he has had bad experiences with these types of player before or perhaps he just envies them.

Top Posters In This Topic

This an exceptionally good post. I am kind of lost though. Do you want us to discus something are you just stating something? Or is it both?

Oh my, we can always discuss the types hahaha or make your own post of what other types you know of.

This is, by far, one of the best posts ever written, Mel! Keep up the great work!

Thanks, Sly.

Forgot a couple.

The "$5" Poster

This type of poster tries to make the point that Jagex will lose their $5, usually adding something like "worst update ever."

The Massive Spammer

This person will post something stupid over and over again to drive in a point. Example below.

The ASCII Art Poster

The type that will post the ASCII art of the man pointing a finger with a caption like "Jagex fails" or "We pay to pk" or something similar.

The "That was my idea" Poster

The type of poster that keeps claiming that a certain, very popular idea (such as lootshare splitting the actual drop equally) was originally thought up by themself.

The "I Posted This Over and Over" Poster

Will keep spamming their poorly typed up idea that starts with "I've been posting this since page #abcd." Example below.

I get your point. But to be fair, you're presupposing that each of those categories' opinions are not legitimate. In many cases, they very well may be, however they differ from yours.

Oh I believe a lot of those types of posters have pure motives, for example the "Best Update Ever" type of player genuinely feels that it really is the best update ever.

Just *some* types of posters are pure jerks.

I'm the Nostalgia Poster. You know, the one that always points out "it used to be much better, remember when Andrew actually *asked* us if we wanted Wilderness or not, even though we were all f2p? Now we don't have a say in anything even of we pay" type of poster.

i think you give too many people a free pass. it's not these types of people that are causing the main problems on the rsof. it's the people that just like to stir up trouble for whatever reason. they dont care about runescape, they like being an annoyance to others.

It might well have been better back then, but then there were only 5 of your playing. Kind of impossible to get everyone's opinions like that now.

Those who have no sense of humour are not allowed to read the hidden message which is my reply to Sheynara. By reading it you void your right to take offense and/or be indignant. Clicking on the hidden message also indicates that you understand that humor is needed in our lives, be it real or interweb-type life.

[hide]Excuse me but how is it reworded? My types are completely different. Mine is also original (written by me) while Toxi merely cut and pasted from a website which is not his.

Not to mention that his post is an example of Ranters Who Rant About Ranting while mine is clearly superior because I wrote it. \' His is serious, too, while mine is witty and amusing.[/hide]

You forgot the KNOW-IT-ALL ones... I'm too lazy to search for examples, but you've seen them a lot with the recent updates. "Jagex should have done like this, it's better, they didn't think", "you are all wrong, this is what is going to happen", "let me explain to you why Jagex did this", etc.

Oh, and does your post belong to one of the categories? Or is there a category like ... POSTS ABOUT POSTS ... or something :D

I would say that it is a fairly accurate description of many posters nowadays. One only need to read thru the first page of the general board to see a potrayal of most of those posters in action.

The biggest problem with developers making decisions without the views of the playerbase, especially the long time players, is they do not have a accurate view necessarily of how the players enjoy playing the game. You cannot please everyone, but you can do better than this.

Paul Gower used to play himself, and had a understanding of how things looked thru the eyes of the player. Their hands on involvement with the community, the fact that they commonly associated with us players on tip.it and on IRC helped them and this game to get to where it is today.

I peticularly am tired of people saying "shut up" every single time someone has a viewpoint that differs from their own. The whole point of a forum is to *discuss* things.

Sad thing is no matter what Jagex does, some will constantly say its the greatest thing since sliced bread. As I said earlier, if Jagex changed every one of our characters into walking pieces of feces, as long as they stated that it was better or combatted RWTing, then people would be here praising it.

What Jagex did might be effective against the majority of the RWTers, however its about the real world equivilent of stopping bank robberies by getting rid of banks. It might be somewhat effective, but it is going entirely too far. Just like the police understand, you cannot stop all crime, and your objective should be to minimise it as much as possible without annoying or angering the law abiding citizens.

Not to mention, those who are determined to illegally sell items will find a way to do so. Be it by the game chests in their house, converting items to armor and dying at the new bandit minigame, slow 3k exchanges, or just selling the characters themselves.

The two biggest defining characteristics of a MMORPG is human interaction, and different ways to play.

Starting with the latter, there is no one way to "play" the game, despite the views of alot of posters and Jagex lately. You can be a social player, or you can keep to yourself. You can specialise in one skill, or work on abt of all. You can be a hero, or a villian. You can be peaceful, or kill your fellow player. You can be a merchant, a roleplayer, or a item collector. The choices are SUPPOSE to be endless.

Lately, it has gotten to where you are forced to be a skiller, and not just that, but a skiller that does everything. Anything else Jagex and the dang posters as of late will tell you is not how you are suppose to play the game. The fact that you had so many options in the earlier days is also one of the reason why this game become so popular.

As for the human interaction, be it trading the way you want, working on skills together, fighting dangerous beasts, player killing, chatting, or any other possibilities. Lately, each and every update aimed at stopping RWTing has also severely limited many of the human factors of the game, the very reason for having a MMORPG in the first place. If we wanted to perform every single action thru an automated process, we might as well play an offline RPG!

Which category was that?

I'm the Nostalgia Poster. You know, the one that always points out "it used to be much better, remember when Andrew actually *asked* us if we wanted Wilderness or not, even though we were all f2p? Now we don't have a say in anything even of we pay" type of poster.

It might well have been better back then, but then there were only 5 of your playing. Kind of impossible to get everyone's opinions like that now.

Clearly you are exaggerating how few players there where, which I understand.

Its harder to gather opinions, but its not impossible. You also do not necessarily need every opinion, but gather a general view of how many oppose and support ideas.

Again, the long term players again are ideal, as they typically have a better understanding of the game. They have seen how many updates effect the game, and typically are aware of how the average player uses the various features of the game itself. I do not mean by any stretch of the imagination that are the only ones who get an opinion, but rather that their thoughts and ideas should be listened to more closely.
