Anyone here been affected by the fires in California? It seems like it's been one of the worst I've heard of in a long time. Hope everyone from here is ok.

Indirectly affected (poor air quality). It's pretty much just as bad as when I was in Southern California back in October 2007. :(

Here are some images from NASA showing the hot spots of the fire, as well as the smoke spread...

I have a friend out there, and I don't think he's affected by it, but I hope he's safe in case the fires spread out to SoCal.

(he's in Rancho Cucamunga)

My thoughts are with the families and those affected by the fires.

It seems that the west coast (or west side of the country in general) gets hit with huge forest fires every year. It must suck to have live out there and be constantly worried about if your home is going to make it another day or be burnt to ashes.

I hope everyone living around there gets evacuated.

Yeah, Octobor's were a lot worse than these, in terms of how smokey the air was, and I'm all the way down at the beach..

EDIT: Huh, they're nowhere near me. I've been out of town for the past two weeks so I was just thinking I had missed them, lulz

The fires are pretty located all over California, mostly in the mountainous regions where most of our forests are located. Those in the metro areas face the aftermath of the fires, i.e. smoke and ash raining down in some parts of the state.

In San Francisco, it's not so bad, but on some days the smoke mingles with the clouds and the sunlight ends up being a light pink to a reddish color when it beams down on the ground. It's rather creepy. In Redding, which is further up north in California, the sky's practically pinkish/orange colored, and there were reports of ash falling down there as well, picked up by the winds from the vegetation fires.

Majority of these fires were caused by dry lightning strikes. At one point there was nearly 2000 wildfires burning. There are now approximately 300 still going on. In Northern California, officials are still concerned about the Butte Fire (a.k.a. Basin Complex), which is near Big Sur. Containment has been going up and down so it hasn't been great for the residents there at all.

Here's a more interactive map, showing the fire locations, shelters for both humans and animals, and Red Cross shelters.

Word to the wise: When in California, pick a home in the city. :geek:

I haven't seen much smoke where I live, which is west of San Bernadino.

The smoke has been coming down a little bit, but its not nearly as bad as the fires that were in October. My school district closed because the smoke was so bad.

Its a good thing I live right next to a lake. I can just jump in there if fire comes to my house.

When I flew down to L.A. over the 4th I got a pretty good view of the Big Sur fire. And this weekend I was up in Chico with some friends. It was pretty smoky.

My carbon footprint is bigger than yours...and you know what they say about big feet.

Those fires are about 600 miles North of where I am (OC baby), so I got nothing to worry about.

It's not just California, Washington and Oregon have been having a lot of wild fires recently as well: http://www.king5.com/localnews/stories/ ... 6397e.html California seems to have it a lot worse though.

I hope that anyone living around these fires is okay. I hope these fires are contained soon.

it was a dreadful experience. ashes we're falling to the windshields in cars, sky was red, the sun was pale orange and in the dark, fogs of smoke would be visible. but it eventually faded away after 9-10 days. .

Yep. 1.75 miles from my house. I'll post another picture my dad took of the flames when he gets home so you have a better idea of how close it was.

Read were i live, we have had Very very very very poor air quailty, for weeks sometimes you step outside, you smell the smoke, i have to practice cross country in this too :(

I was mostly affected by the Big sur fire and the fires near the Bay area, but sometimes the smoke went farther south making it worse. I haven't heard anything new so far, so the big fire like the Big sur fire and Indian fire must be out :), Also to some of the people talking about the sky, During sunset on smoky days its weird, you can actually see the sun in a red glow and stare at it without having eye damage, I'm just scared that the fire don't start close to the bay area in the Coastal Range.

Just watched the news. Big Sur fire now at 61% containment! But it may not be fully contained until the end of the month. :(
