It's pretty cruel to preemptively label the person in question an attention [bleep], though, especially considering that if they were lying, not much was lost, but it's one of the shittiest things you could think of them if they were telling the truth (Pascal's wager style). Or in an introduction, or within a couple of days of knowing said person. Besides, what's the problem? I don't say it to their face, I do say my condolences in case it's in fact true, and move on with my life. If they're telling the truth, what CAN I do anyway? If not, I'm not wasting my time on an attention [bleep]. Here's my basis: people don't like talking about terrible experiences about their life.
