Star.
From my experience, its always nice to pick a uni that's in a city you aren't going to mind walking around in. Not that Halifax is the safest place in the world (5th highest crime rate in Canada, I think BC has dibs on 1-4), but a huge portion of the student body from various universities go downtown (most bars per student capita in North America WOOOO!) all time. Not one of those places where you go to University and never leave the campus the whole time your there for sure. I don't think that would be any fun. My biggest worry is that I'll fall into depression while I'm there so I do need a place where I can take a walk or a bike ride. I guess I will choose Nottingham but I'm so unfamiliar with the area. stevepole
Has anyone here gone to a college/university in an unfamiliar city? I did. I grew up in small town in Washington state, then moved to Arizona to attend my University. I had never been to Arizona before moving there so everything was very new to me. I loved it, it was a great experience, I don't think I would have done it any different, looking back.
Ginger_Warrior
My biggest worry is that I'll fall into depression while I'm there so I do need a place where I can take a walk or a bike ride. I guess I will choose Nottingham but I'm so unfamiliar with the area. Has anyone here gone to a college/university in an unfamiliar city?I have, but asking for my experience may not be that helpful because what suits me might not suit you. One thing I would say though is that, due to the reality of finding employment and progressing your career, you will probably have to move away from home at some point in your life. If you feel you can cope with the transition, it might as well be now when you're receiving student grant and another amount of means tested loan. If I were you, I'd be asking myself these questions instead:How far away from home am I going to be / How often can I come back home to see friends and family? What keeps me sane whenever I'm not working or studying? What place 'feels' right?A common worry among students moving away is whether or not they'll make new friends in the city they're going to. The last thing anyone wants is to be stuck on a course for three years with no-one to enjoy the experience with, but for the vast majority of people, that doesn't happen. Look at the Students Union for each university to get an idea of what activities are available. These societies and clubs are a God-send because it's so very easy to find new friends with common interests there. That's entirely the reason they exist. Furthermore, I found it much easier to make friends at university than I did at college. Everyone on your course is on there because they have a common interest. During Fresher's Week you'll almost definitely be given the chance to meet people on your course before formal studies begin. Sometimes there's even Facebook pages. Then of course there's accommodation. Every September, residential halls are filled with people who've moved away from home, more often than not for the first time in their lives. For everyone in there, it's all very confusing and distressing, and part of that is deliberate, because together you'll learn to live independently. You'll make friendships here. My point is, there's really no need to assume that just because you're shy or whatever, you will go through university living each day as a miserable loner desperately searching for a way out of a spiraling depression. There's just so many purposefully designed opportunities to find friends at university, it barely ever happens that way. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
fastortoise
I'm spending all day reading thesis papers from past students that held research positions in the lab I'm starting in on Monday and good lord... people can't write! It's no wonder I do well when there's a written component to an exam or project - I write like goddamn Sir Doyle. I'm not trying to be snoody or anything, its the honest truth! I can tell they're trying to sound professional and that they know what they're writing about, but they fall short by so much that the quality of the writing is sub par to the vast majority of posts in this forum alone. jasignhagj
Just got back from a 30 hour famine. Raised some money, hung out with some good friends...It was a good time. And food has never tasted this good before.I did one of those in Jr. High. We ordered pizza after, and it was the best pizza I've ever had. Estonian dude
As a comment to that party last night, I didn't enter. Some guys older than me had already occupied the spot and didn't want to let anyone in, so we just went home. And that is illegal in Estonia aswell, that 13 and adult thing. So I've noticed this thread's regulars all follow similar trends. And food has never tasted this good before. This needs some explaining for me. To my knowledge, a famine is usually an involuntary shortage of food in Ethiopia or some such place caused by drought and mismanagement. They usually go on for longer than 30 hours, too. But I am guessing there's an American meaning I'm not picking up on. Bonez899
You go around raising money and pledges saying "for every hour Johnny goes without eating I will give $2," the money will be paid before hand as the length will already be set. The money goes to some charity or another. I have never had the chance to take part in one, and honestly think I wouldn't if I didn't need to as it would be freaking grueling... In other news, I'm away this weekend at a nice hotel swimming, eating, and using my laptop while my dad goes to a conference. Along with that I'm hating on the people partying next door. Also, changed my display name, try and find the difference? http://forum.tip.it/topic/325514-bonez899s-journey-to-an-eventual-max/ My blog of progress on Runescape. Randox
I was never up for a 30 hour famine. I start trying to vomit at about 16-18 hours without food. I wouldn't do well in a famine :( I did go 4 weeks in the hospital without food though, which is exactly as fun as it sounds (and I got sick a lot at first as my stomach made its displeasure known). Also, there are a staggering number of commercials for food on TV, so I spent most of my time on a laptop or playing xbox.

Ouchy
We have it here in NZ too, but ours is for 40 hours. We can do whatever we want for ours, we just have to give up something. Most people choose no sleep and just drink redbull all night. My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages. RpgGamer
I fast like a dozen times a year because I'm the first born male of my generation on the jewish side of my family. 30 hours ain't shit. Going to a party at a 14 year old's house sounds lame as all hell. And if I heard anyone over the age of 16 saying "trying to get some tight [kitty]" in that situation, I'm gonna start knocking skulls. I had an uneventful day, but I bought my Loaded Tour tickets, so in a couple weeks I'll be rage raving. Finally, something to look forward to. Bows
Played some Reach with some of my staff members at The Halo Council earlier and had a blast. Ordered a few things in preparation for my vacation in June with Kym. Heading down to Los Angeles for MLG Anaheim and to visit Disneyland with my brother for about a week. Kym also just bought StarCraft, and, since she's Asian, she's going to be amazing at it in no time.
