I was going to take an ice sign (it was discarded on the side) but the light of day stopped me.

Today I'm hunting for new laptops. It's probably going to be a HP again. Leaning towards the HP Envy m6-1310sa.

HPs overheat like no other though. Always heard good things about Dell's stability.

HPs don't overheat anymore. Better yet, go for pro laptops instead of regular/gaming laptops. Hell my coworker's HP laptop is better than my Republic of Gamers laptop (although he did pay $2300 for it compared to the $1200 I paid for mine).

Dell being stable, that makes me laugh, with the experience I had with friends that had Dell and Alienware laptops for years, and now that I work, all Dells, and their hardware fails pretty often.

Well I would personally suggest Mac's above anything, but I'd get an assload of grief had I said that, because in all honesty, Mac's are 100% superior for everything but programmers and gamers. And on that note, they're not even bad for that, you just have to do alot of more loopsholes in order to have as much "freedom" as you have on a PC.

The problem with macs is that you pay triple the price for half the specs.

I found Asus (appart from Republic of Gamers) is pretty unbeatable. My 7 year old Asus laptop still runs like new, except the battery. Same with all the regular laptop's I've seen. I could say the same for Lenovo although I have never owned one. Unfortunately I can't say the same for Republic of gamers, seeing as my 2 year old ROG had some trouble already (but easy fixes).

Note that the population of these boards is mostly gamers, and a few programmers :P

Because it's a perfect excuse, some comics for general enjoyment:

I've had a Dell Latitude D620 for over 6 years, and it only started having heat problems about a year ago (most likely because of the age of everything) but I got a cooling pad for it and now it's fine. From what I understand though, it was one of the last good systems they released and most everything since has been just awful.

I managed to create an awesome depth sorting method and got it working today. It sorts from back-to-front using a topological sort. However, it uses lines to determine if an object is in front or behind another. Works nicely for strange props (such as those at diagonals) without enforcing a strict isometric view:

If its anything like mimicking 3D in Adobe After Effects, which I doubt, I understand it's usefulness. Are you making a game?

Yea, I'm making a game. It's going along very nicely. I used to roll my own game frameworks but am giving Love2D a try. It is so lovely!

Speaking of which, I implemented the console today. It can inspect any bit of the game state, modify it, and also log helpful messages and change rendering options on the fly. This will help speed up debugging exponentially (seriously!).

Oh, and I have an HP desktop (10+ years old and my first computer) that I used as a home file server recently... I like HP because of that. Never had any other HP computer. I would suggest Lenovo for laptops, though. And if you have money to burn, try and get an enterprise/business laptop, not the normal consumer lines. It'll be a bit uglier (usually) but they are built like rocks (at least Thinkpads are).

Went to the doctor the other day because I was getting concerned with breathing troubles and constant, sometimes violent, coughing. Found out I can have my medical records stored online now, and allow doctors and hospitals to access it (they require my consent to though). Might do it next time I have to go. Which won't be for a while. $110 is too much for an appointment.

As far as laptops go I'd pick a Mac over the current consumer competition, but would not run OSX on it. It and Windows are too restrictive.

Dell laptops are more stable. Your anecdotal evidence is not valid.

The second my entire steam library is supported on Linux I'll drop windows in a heartbeat, games are the only thing keeping me here.

The support with games is growing rather rapidly, especially with Gaben now pushing for Linux as the gaming platform in the future. This coupled with privacy fears in the wake of PRISM being known, more and more people will be trying, and hopefully sticking with, Linux. Me, personally, I got sick of how unstable Windows is and now use Xubuntu exclusively.

Job interview tomorrow with EB Games (or Gamestop as they're known in US). idc as long as it's better pay then gov' assist and keeps me mentally occupied.

Discout for your friends if you get it? 8-)

I have had 3 dells in my day and one of three died because of poor math skills - was a custom Dell Inspiron 5300 (I think) and it had a graphics card option that was not designed for laptops so it overheated and died. But Dell's website let my dad pick that graphics card. Stupid. And then he went and bought a Dell desktop that makes an awful racket despite being cleaned properly probably once a month and is just uber slow and garbage even though it has 8Gb RAM.

The first one was a Dell Latitude laptop that unfortunately we decided died when it was sitting on the counter in an inch of water. It probably would have booted up if we had dried it out but we decided to not try that as it was potentially dangerous and the laptop was pretty old anyway.

I have an Acer Aspire and it's awesome, the only thing I'd like to change about it is more RAM (which I can do for $70) and make it lighter (which I can't do anything about). It's a 15.6" with 4gb ram and a 500gb hard drive, got it off newegg for ~$300, AMD insides and a Radeon graphics card.

Why pick a mac for exactly the same hardware you'd get for half the price with the competition if you're going to use Linux on it?

As for my anecdotal evidence, I don't care what you say, everyone has their own experience. I just know that I haven't seen a lot of Dells that didn't fail after a short time after buying them. Hell, even very recently I had a friend that was asking me to repair his 1 month old Alienware because they wouldn't repair it or put it on warranty, so I guess even their service (that used to be extremely good) went down.

I've used my Dell desktop regularly (perhaps too regularly) for over 4 years now and haven't encountered a single problem.

Yeah my Dell desktop runs like a champ still even though it had a few problems in the past that were sorted out.

Ok, have it your way. It's like I said, everyone has their experience with their computers. Right now out of you 3, there's one that had a little bit of trouble. Then again maybe they make better quality computers for consumers than companies. I currently work with Precision workstations, Lattitude, Vostro, Optiplex.

I always heard bad things about Dell, I don't have any experience on them myself.

As for HP, I hate the damn things. Every problem I've had or helped someone else with, on a HP, was either impossible to fix or just a huge pain in the ass. They're way too strict about driver version and legitimacy, of both theirs and 3rd parties.

I've never had (more than minor) problems with a Dell that wasn't 6+ years old. That said, my friend's Dell was essentially a paperweight after less than a year.

They were the exact same machine, too. They were ordered, paid for and delivered together, even.

Keep in mind that the human brain has a gigantic blind spot for brand loyalty, in that your own possessions are automatically seen as superior (and this does include the brands we buy from), despite any evidence to the contrary. It's a fairly well documented and proven phenomenon. My point being, it's an argument in which everyone who has ever used a computer has a personal bias that is immune to argumentation, it will always circle back to 'yeah, but my chosen brand is the best'.

Just throwing that out there :P

I have decided that having a more comfortable bed makes it markedly more difficult to actually get out of said bed in the morning, especially now that the nights are getting cool. It is truly a case of 'at no point today will I be this comfortable, so I really want to stay here and enjoy this as long as I possibly can'. I think I am enjoying my class schedule though, it starts and ends on computers and english, with maths in the center. It's not a bad way to ease yourself into the day, and sort of relax at the end.

The first thing I did in GTA5 today was kill a hooker. It was like christening a ship for it's maiden voyage. I teared up a little.

There was a huge debate on the radio yesterday about that (specifically in GTA4) and how that kind of thing is corrupting the youth of today, with only minor mention of how it's rated M and should only be sold to adults an absolutely no mention of violence in movies (like Saw) or TV (like Criminal Minds).

I saw it as just one more example of how people raised in the 60's are horribly out of touch with today's society.

If a game had half the violence of Criminal Minds, it'd probably get slapped with an AO rating as soon as it was announced.

They do have a tiny sliver of a point behind all of the fearmongering, though. There's a bit of a difference between watching someone act out violence and being the one to act out violence. Even then, I'm not sure how much violence and 'corruption' has actually been caused by that kind of thing. By the time you can play the game, you know better.

Alternatively, if you're surprised that there are crimes in a franchise called "Grand Theft Auto"...

If you need me, I'm going to keep taking the 'good' route in games, in the hope that a similar effect makes me a hero in real life.
