God damn, I have to read To Kill A Mockingbird over the summer for first term of Freshman year. The worst thing is, I already had to read it in 8th grade. -.- Whats so good about that book anyway, its completely overrated. My teachers say its a classic, I say its an average book at its best. Why does every high school make you read that book, I really don't get it...

Its a very good book if you don't read it at school and get to avoid having to analyze it. The problem is while its a very good book, it is very simple so you get annoyed when you have to discuss it. While its a classic tale, its best to have kids read it about 6th grade so they fully understand but aren't underwhelmed by the depth level.

I didn't really like it when I read it, but I understand why they call it a classic.

Just finished the novel "Velocity" by Dean Koontz, amazing thriller/crime book.

Now I am forced to read "A Prayer For Owen Meany" by John Irving for my Honors English 11 summer assignment. Another book dealing with religion, ugh.

^^^Yeah, I have read Clancy...I ended up buying Battle Royale by Koushun Takami. It's apparently the Japanese version of Lord of Flies. Stephen King even has a blurb on it, and if Stephen King has a blurb on a book published by a manga publishing company...

I also got Rouroni Kenshin...the first three. I like Kenshin ::'

If you got the manga of battle royale I hope you have a taste for porn. If its the same version I half viewed its rather disgusting stuff.

No, I didn't get the manga, I got the actual book. It's the first time it's been translated to English and I always have loved Japanese literature. They sure can write some screwed up stories.

That's interesting, tell me how it turns out I may look into reading it if it is a good story.

I've got BR on DVD and I've read some of the manga that my friend got (lulz, she's not 18 but they let her buy it  ). I've been meaning to get the book but I wasn't sure if it was worth it.

I read Jurassic Park during my extremely long car ride across the country . . .

Honestly I don't think it's that great. Sure, it raises some great ethical questions (duh, I read it for Bioethics class) but when the only characters of any interest are Malcolm and Hammond, the mouthpieces for the opposing sides of the central question, you have a problem as far as a novel goes. I never even got any kind of thrill in when the freaking VELOCIRAPTORS attacked. I mean, this is supposed to be a thriller, right? All that aspect really managed to do was spawn a running joke on my backpacking trip (forget the bears, watch out for velociraptors!)

When I finished that I borrowed The Dragon Never Sleeps by Glen Cook from a fellow backpacker. Terrible beyond words. After 70 pages I still didn't understand half of what was going on. Not a good idea in any kind of novel, but especially a sci-fi one.

I'm only at page 75 but Battle Royale has been really really good. The translation has not had one mess up, which I find rare for a translated book. I've never watched the movie or read the manga, so I never knew how brutal it was going to be.

I would definitely buy the book, I personally have been looking for a crazy book like it for eternity. I would suggest it to anyone who really needs a great action book.

So yeah, I would get the book. I just found it randomly at a B+N and haven't been sorry for paying as much as it was. To tell the truth, I can't put it down.

So yeah, it is really good.

@Nom: I was thinking about reading Glen Cook...thanks for the warning

Yeah, but as the Halo books have proven, and the SWTFU book, video game books are not always too good.

And why with the expletives? He's talking about VG books, not VG's in general. And I agree that VG books are usually pretty bad.

I've recently had a new interest in reading, paticularly popular science and science fiction.

I loved it before, but fell out over time.

And now, after a trip to the library I'm starting to rediscover it.

Right now I'm focusing on authors that I know well and have read previously.

Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov are my current favourites.

Concerning science fiction, and Asimov in particular I've only read I,Robot The Caves of Steel and a few of his short story collections. So I'm starting to read some more.

If you guys have any good suggestions please tell me !

From Asimov, try the Foundation series. It's science fiction inspred by the decline of the Roman empire. Here's the wiki link which explais the plot better than I can: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundation ... he_trilogy

I've only read the original trilogy books (Foundation, Foundation and empire, Second Foundation) and they were pretty good. I was unable to finish the fourth one (Foundation's edge) because it was too dense for my taste, but there are a lot more books of those series if you like them.

Really you need to read quite a lot of Asimov before everything clicks. Try to read (most) of the Foundation series (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation, Foundations Edge, and Foundation and Earth), and the Robot series (The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, Robots of Dawn, Robots and Empire). The Empire series is not as good, and does not fit entirely with the other two series.

If you didn't come across Nightfall in the short story collections, then you should look for that too.

Titles by other authors you could look out for would be Hyperion by Dan Simmons and the Rama series by Arthur C. Clarke, starting with Rendevous with Rama.

I am into so many types of books that everyone I know is pressuring me to get into a single genre.

Books I've Read Recently:

Dead Man's Walk by Larry McMurtry

-This a solid Larry McMurtry Western yarn that acts as a prequel for the Pultizier (sp?) Prize-winning novel Lonesome Dove, which was also excellent.

Comanche Moon by Larry McMurtry

-Also an excellent Larry McMurtry book which is a sequel to Lonesome Dove.

The Stand by Stephen King

-This book scared the hell out of me, yet ended up as my favorite book of all time. :ohnoes:

Summary: America is struck by a man-made disease (engineered as a weapon, but escaped from the lab) that killed all but less than 1% of the population. Half of the survivors flock to the banner of a 108 year-old women to band against the other half of the population, who joins up with one of the devil's minions in Las Vegas to try to wipe out the remaining free peoples of the country.

The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay

-Great book about a boy growing up in South Africa in the middle of apartheid (sp?).

Shogun by James Clavell

-Excellent read about Japan in the colonial area with lots of violence, deceit, and politics that lead to more violence  .

The Belgariad and The Mallorean by David Eddings

-Wonderful twin fantasy series with the same characters, whom you grow to love and admire fiercely. There are five books in each series, and I re-read them several times a year.

Hopefully the books I described were not mentioned in previous posts, as I did not have time to read the entire thread.
