Hawks
If you frequent the Tech and Computers forum, you know of my plight. My parents are totally OCD about our computers. And I currently hate them for it. I have a restricted account on the computers with internet access, and I share one without with my brother. A week ago I convinced my mom to let me download IE8 (because I figured my dad would be okay with it since it's MS and I thought it would work better than IE7) on her login. So I got it all set up, and it's okay, not amazing, but imo slightly better once you've got the kinks worked out. Only problem was Java wouldn't load. Since I wasn't thinking, I thought it was because IE didn't have it in the cache yet. I then got off and didn't use it until today. Then my brother tried to play RS and got really mad because it wouldn't work. He then yelled at me. I thought for a while (and since everyone always thinks it's IE) I think it's Java. So I told my dad that. Then my mom came up and asked me if I could play RS on my login. I told her I couldn't, that I told dad I thought it was the Java, and that he needed to fix it because I wasn't allowed to. I got mad because she kept going on about how she really shouldn't have let me do it and all this crap so I yelled at her and she took away my computer for tomorrow. (I'm writing on my DSi) How would you get two over-controlling parents to let you have even a little say in what programs are available to use on the computer? Multiple people have said to buy my own, but I don't have any money. I'm 15, have a good knowledge of computers and graphic art, and I have experience working with kids. I do yard work and odd things around my house but my parents pay me next to nothing. I would try doing some sort of commission art but I'm afraid they'll flip when I ask if I can. What other sorts of summer jobs (or part-time year round) could someone like me get? I do also have First Aid and an Adult CPR certification from the Red Cross. What computer would you recommend get sig by Soa.....tip.it times.....art & mediadeviantart/flickr/last.fm/steam/twitter/tumblr/youtube
Hawks
(sorry I guess the dsi only lets you put that many characters in) What computer would you recommend getting? I know it's more of a T&C question, but I'd like your thoughts. Obviously cheap is good. I'd rather not have a laptop because I'd like to be able to upgrade it frequently. I'd like to build it myself if possible (I might be taking a class on that next year in school). sig by Soa.....tip.it times.....art & mediadeviantart/flickr/last.fm/steam/twitter/tumblr/youtube
Brad25891
If I was in your position I would just try my hardest to get a small part time job and save as much money as you can. Although, if you're only looking to run Runescape you could probably just pick a really bad one up second hand really cheap. Alternatively, you could save up ~£300 (Not sure in dollars) and that should get you a computer capable of running crysis at a decent framerate, let alone runescape. Thats not including monitor money. To get a decent monitor you're looking at another £100, or second hand you could pick one up for a bout £40-70 Again, Not sure what it's like in america, could be cheaper. l0rd
Well, if the purpose of this thread is to ask what kind of computer we recommend, then this belongs in the appropriate forum. However, I think you want a little more input about your personal life: Your situation at home seems to trivial to get too upset over. Just let your parents fix the computer or, even better, download Firefox. As you get older, and as long as you stay out of trouble, your parents will trust you gradually more. You also might want to take some initiative and show them that you are (more so than them) competent with computers somehow. As for a computer, if you don't play any graphically intense games, I'd recommend getting a 200-350 dollar netbook. You may not want a laptop, but you can get a perfectly fine netbook that will last you a while for very cheap, it's a good option for someone with little income. If all you're doing is looking to play runescape then a netbook will be absolutely fine, and they are very cheap. I can also give you a list of games that would work great on a netbook too :D Deviant Art Account2 Signatures | 6 Photographs | 1 Other

Nadril
You're 15, you should be able to get a part time job. I wouldn't do commission art unless you can find some people local. I have a difficult time trying to find commissions, part of the reason why I need (and want) a good portfolio. Why won't any of the suggestions we gave you in T&C work? Just get a small flash drive and load a portable version of firefox and stuff on it for yourself.
obfuscator
If you think your life sucks because of that, you have yet to experience a life that sucks. This. While certainly your plight isn't one that's enviable, there are far worse things than a junky computer and over-controlling parents. As others have said, I would advise getting a job. Even if you can't find one working for a company of some sort, try doing door to door yard work; there is usually a good market for that in the summer. i_love_burritos
Ever considered killing your parents ? Or alternatively you could start saving or get a job and buy your own computer and become more independent. You won't always have your parents over you, you know. mmmcannibalism
Create a problem and solve it to prove yourself to your parents? Certainly not the ethical way of doing things, but I think you should consider it. Orthodoxy is unconciousnessthe only ones who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed. Laura
Sounds like your parents are luddites. Not much really changes that, especially since they don't trust your technological skills.
Plugpoint
Rather than forking out a lot of money for a computer just talk to them... they're your parents after all. Not to mention the fact that I bet they'd go OCD with what you can install on the new computer. Maxed 15/06/
Wizz
Wanna trade parents? Mine fall for the easiest scams ever, I'm just about done erasing 6, yes SIX Trojan Horse Viruses and like 370 Spyware AND Malware. They get angry at me because I want to renew our Anti virus.... I have to make a back up every two weeks or so because sometimes it gets so serious that I have to erase everything and restart from scratch (or a system restore would do.) It's sad that I'm the Admin and my parents are the Limited Accounts. :/ Wongton is better than me in anyway~~

Hawks
I guess I forgot a couple of important details. The reason I can't download anything is because we have Norton Internet Security 2003 (+the limited account) and it won't let you run any [Caution: Executable File] files you've downloaded unless you have admin access. I can't even move shared shortcuts from my desktop. Tomorrow after I go to the doctor's I will try to download portable firefox and an IE6 skin. Also my dad is and has been for a while a software developer for various companies, and he thinks he knows everything there is to know. And I kind of live in the middle of nowhere so door to door work isn't really an option. The only reason I'm on right now is because I'm in the process of downloading my insulin pump to the computer... It's easier if I don't have to disconnect it. I have sort of created a problem by getting IE8 on the laptop, I've sort of solved it by telling them to update the Java, but I can't do anything about it because I can't update the Java. Plus if it does actually fix it, they'll ignore anything that it was my suggestion that fixed it because they know it was my fault (even though my mom has admitted that she'll take the blame for the IE8). sig by Soa.....tip.it times.....art & mediadeviantart/flickr/last.fm/steam/twitter/tumblr/youtube
IGoddessI
1. It's their computer - you don't own it. Therefore they aren't being over controlling as it is their computer and up to them what they want on it. You are however, being a little emotionally immature about the whole thing. 2. Get a part time job and earn some cash - buy your own (good on your friends for being smart). Good job getting first aid and CPR but you're 15 so don't go thinking all these over the top, cool jobs that you might get because of it. Your age unfortunately is going to be a let down point. Start off working at a fast food joint or something like that and once you mature, get older, become wiser then try working with children because really, you're kind of still a child yourself. Start off small then make your goals larger. 3. The cheapest that has the most qualities, that is good for gaming (to suit your needs). You can always upgrade it and get flashy crap for it when you earn more money. 4. Perhaps the whole family should be more concerned about spending time together offline ;) The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours. l0rd
Aye. Not that I have any experience running a family, but it always seems like the families with the most rules implemented are the least happy. I say set example and lead your kids in a direction to make them want to be good, instead of treating them like high-security inmates. Freedom is the is root of forbearance. Oh, and WB Goddess after your posting-respite. :D [iNSERT "I R EATIN TEH SHIX ATM" BILL COSBY SIGNATURE GIF HERE, LOL]
Range_This11
It might be the parents' computer, but honestly, restricting kids' access to it is like having a huge bowl of candy in the room that they can never touch. As a kid who was once restricted use, I can say that it's really easy to get frustrated. Controlling things like a curfew or which friends you are allowed to hang out with is fine, but when the computer is in the home and there are ways to check what kids do on the computer, restricting it is just kind of ridiculous in my opinion. walka92
in my experience, a parent generally knows sweet [bleep] all about computers. tell them that, and ask them to give you admin privelages on the computer so you can fix any little mistakes like that. and if you use the computer more than them, just tell them that it will be easier to keep the computer up to date and clean if you have full access on a daily basis its what i did, lol. it worked, too I'm gonna be walking down an alley in varrock, and walka is going to walk up to me in a trench coat and say "psst.. hey man, wanna buy some sara brew"walka92- retired with 99 in attack, strength, defence, health, magic, ranged, prayer and herblore and 137 combat. some day i may return to claim 138 combat, but alas, that time has not yet come
