Defence Apparently is Useless.

Yep, thats rich coming from a guy trying to get 99 defence for the past 2-3 years. I'm in the wilderness with a friend, as I finished killing someone some git with a dds trys to pile jump me. 0-0,0-0,0-0,0-1. I thought nah, he wont manage: 40-40-34-40 dead (yes I ate before you say thats over 99). He has 90 strength, I have 95 Defence. Im in Rune armor with 95 Defence, you would THINK I wouldnt get hit so much but NOOOO, even with Chiv he drives right through it. gf 250k gone from my already crappy bank.

ouch, tough luck there

I'm gonna be walking down an alley in varrock, and walka is going to walk up to me in a trench coat and say "psst.. hey man, wanna buy some sara brew"

walka92- retired with 99 in attack, strength, defence, health, magic, ranged, prayer and herblore and 137 combat. some day i may return to claim 138 combat, but alas, that time has not yet come

His attack level and boosts are all that matter for the hits; str then determines how hard said hits are.

 

 

 

Bad luck though.

I think this is why defense is so underrated. Would defense be more useful it he hit a 1-1-1-1? The numbers you get are 100% based on your opponents strength and luck. That's it.

 

 

 

Your saying it would have been better if he hit low?

 

The strength level he had would make strength useless if you had your way.

 

 

 

You think Rune armor has good defense in members?

 

Die with some good armor then come, and rant.

So you think an entire skill is useless because somebody with an unknown Attack level managed to hit through your Defence level and your rune armour a mere four times?

 

 

 

Having a high Defence level doesn't make you invulnerable. It just makes you harder to hit, and influences the random chance of getting hit in your favour.

Attack should be countered by a new skill ,"dodge" or "elusiveness" or "evasiveness" or what have you, and strength countered by "defense" or "toughness" or "resilience" or whatever.

 

 

 

Not that I really agree with this rant though. All I can say is LUCK.

Well, I guess thats what it's mostly based around. I knew he could hit but I just wasn't expecting such high, constiant numbers.

I think this is why defense is so underrated. Would defense be more useful it he hit a 1-1-1-1? The numbers you get are 100% based on your opponents strength and luck. That's it.

Rune barely has 200 stats with a shield. Barrows has 250+ without a shield.

Hmm you're 106 combat, he could've been a maxed zerker, or if you were in level 4 wild or so some barrow pure with 99 strength and piety and still like 90ish attack. He just got lucky, because you haven't fought a tank ranger, with my 92 attack I barely hit 85+ defence in just d'hide and some rune.

The guy he was fighting had 90 strength. no zerker hits them hits at 90 strength.

Defence in Runescape is like armor in DnD- it affects the chances of the attacker to hit the defender. Defencel level is natural armor which actual armor, barring the Elysian and the Divine shields, adds on. Attack increases the chance of hit, like in DnD as well. Strength is a modifier on the damage you do.

 

 

 

Most other MMORPGS have a dodge AND a defence percentage. WoW's agility raises both armor and the percentage of dodge ever so slightly. Armor further increases armor, reducing the PERCENTAGE of damage dealt. No one can ever have 100%, barring some sort of buff, as increased armor has decreasing returns. Strength increases max hit, while another stat increases chance to hit, can't remember it at the mo. Most MMORPGS also have a max and min hit- unless you dodge an attack.

 

 

 

This system is far less random and, in my opinion, much better. The only con is that it is far to complex for mere mortals to calculate all the time, which is why DnD uses the more random system of dice. Runescape can, and should, do better.

If the CORPORAL beast is this hard, imagine how hard a GENERAL or COLONEL beast would be. a corporal is not even an admirable rank in armies that use that ranking system.

 

Yeah, it is a pking minigame, so any arguments anybody makes will probably be biased.

The best way this will end :Everybody just says,"I'm not arguing with you anymore, goodbye."

The worst way this will end: I don't really know, psychological warfare? Worldwide thermonuclear war? Pie eating contest?

I see what you mean, it seems pretty weird that strength is not mitigated by any stat, maybe they should make armour bonus less like defence and make it more like a percentage reduction.

 

 

 

My understanding is that at the moment armour bonus does the same as defence whereas it decreases the chance you're hit... But if it were to say- reduce the damage taken by a certain % for a certain armour value- this would effectively give you a dodge chance ( defense ) and damage reduction even if you are hit ( armour bonus ).

Armor doesn't make you more elusive/"dodgy"/evasive, it negates some damage you take.
