April 3, 200917 yr Because Street Fighter is camp, and HPD isn't. :) Going to see the new Fast and the Furious movie tonight. Did you see the third one? I liked the first one a lot back when it came out, the second one not as much but it was ok. The third one looked pretty stupid though so I never got around to seeing it. I haven't put a review down for anything in a while, and I've watched tens/ possibly hundreds of hours of stuff since then. So here we go: "Andromeda" complete series - I've been trying to watch all the fairly recent space scifi TV series, and this was the last one I think I am going to do. It wasn't all that good. The only thing that kept me interested the first four seasons was Lexa Doig, who is really hot (except when she smiles for some reason, but she plays an AI in this so she doesn't smile often). Then everything changed the fifth season, which finally made me actually interested in the show, a little. Still wasn't all that great, plus Lexa wasn't on the show much that season due to being pregnant. Anyways, if anyone knows of any recent space scifi shows I missed, let me know. The ones I've seen are Stargate SG1/Atlantis, Farscape, Battlestart Galactica, Firefly and a little older one Babylon 5. I know about Gene Roddenberry's other space scifi (multiple Star Trek series, Earth: Final Conflict) and I don't plan on watching them. Chocolate - A Thai movie about an autistic girl who starts collecting money from people who owe her mother, who used to be part of some sort of gang. Her handicap allows her to copy people's movements, so she learns different martial arts from watching movies and the kickboxing training facility next to her house. This movie was awesome, while a little slow at first once she starts fighting it doesn't let up for the rest of the movie.
April 3, 200917 yr The Godfather parts I and II Very unimpressed. Why? I don't know, I typically have a hard time thinking movies are awesome that the general public really likes and that I see later than everyone else. I felt the same way with The Dark Knight, all my friends loved it and I thought it was mediocre. The Godfather was a good movie, but it wasn't as good as I expected it to be. The storyline really didn't seem to go anywhere and I didn't much care for the plot either. Although I will say the acting was good in it, but other than that I just didn't like it. Maybe in a month I'll re-watch it and reconsider. "He could climb to it, if he climbed alone, and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder."
April 4, 200917 yr I don't have any movie review to add here, but if you like campy, culty movies, this website has dozens of them, all free to watch/download. Because the movies are discontinued, they're not subject to copyrights or anything like that. http://cultrararevideos.com/ Most of the movies have no well known actors, and horribly stupid plots. For example: [hide=]the movie "Humongous" A woman is raped at cocktail party. Years later, her son grows up to be a big hairy murderous monster who stalks a group of teens shipwrecked on his island. [/hide] A couple movies actually have good actors in them though, like Vincent Price or Peter Fonda.
April 5, 200917 yr Author A Time to Love and a Time to Die I wanted to do a Douglas Sirk double bill yesterday night. First A Time to Love and a Time to Die, followed by Imitation of Life (notice the greatness of both titles!). But I was so incredibly tired that I fell asleep around half past eight. I didn't even have the energy to put the disc in the dvd-player. Around two in the night I woke up, and I felt like I was reborn. So I decided to watch A time to Love and a Time to Die. And I think that after seeing this movie once, it has got to be my favourite Douglas Sirk movie so far. It's so different from things like Written on the Wind, Magnificent Obsession, All That Heaven Allows (again, notice the greatness of all the titles!), and at the same time it isn't. It's a Sirk melodrama set in World War II. So you've got the grim look and the horrors of war (which is not very Sirkian), and within that a German soldier and his love closing their eyes for the world around them trying to escape (very Sirkian). Loving to live and living to love. The sets are brilliant, and so is the love of John Gavin and Liselotte Pulver in this movie. A very moving picture! April 5, 200917 yr Taxi Driver. I'm on a rampage of classics and I loved this one. "He could climb to it, if he climbed alone, and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder."
April 6, 200917 yr Author Glad you did, Range. Yesterday I wanted to see the Man with the Golden Arm, but the first shot after Saul Bass' opening credits reminded me so much of Do the Right Thing that I couldn't get that movie out of my head and I just had to watch it. So I turned off tMwtGA and put on Do the Right Thing. Which is one of my favourite movies, and certainly one of the most important (if not the most important film of the last twenty years). What makes this movie so great is that it is made by an afro-american and you can clearly see this, but at the same time this movie doesn't ram it's ideas down your throat. In fact: it's not very clear what the message is since the movie is in conflict with itself. [bleep]e allows you to think for youself. And that's great. April 6, 200917 yr James Bond - Quantum of Solace. In Blu Ray; the power of my PS3 8-) 2257AD.TUMBLR.COM
April 6, 200917 yr Been a while since I posted here, simply because I haven't been watching many films lately. Instead, I got totally caught up in the Battlestar Galactica universe, after lending series 1-3 from my brother. And I just have to share my sentiments: LOVE LOVE LOVE. By stating the following, I do not believe that I'm exaggerating: this is simply the best sci-fi series in the everness of sci-fi, and though I'm far from hardcore, I've seen quite a bit in my time :. I cannot believe I waited till now to watch it. Also got to know the minimalist composer Philip Glass thanks to an episode of BSG, and simply for that I would be eternally grateful. Apart from that, I watched the Hepburn-Spencer Desk Set. Didn't like it. Outdated, sexist, moralising. Apart apart from that, I watched the infamous Katharine Hepburn TV interview on youtube. What a woman.
April 6, 200917 yr Author haha, I never thought you would be a sci-fi fan. haha. But BSG is really good, from what I've seen. Got the first two seasons, but I stopped at the last episode of season one, and never continued watching. : If you want to get into Glass, here's a nice thing to watch click. :) Signature by Maurice SendakWhen the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore!
April 6, 200917 yr Yesterday I wanted to see the Man with the Golden Arm Have you seen this before? I caught it on TV a year or two ago and thought it was excellent. La lune ne garde aucune rancune.

You have the best part of the series ahead of you, there are some of the best episodes of any TV series around the end of season 2/beginning of season 3.
April 6, 200917 yr Yesterday I wanted to see the Man with the Golden Arm Have you seen this before? I caught it on TV a year or two ago and thought it was excellent. That's the Sinatra film right? If so, it's pretty good I agree. He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. - Aeschylus (525 BC - 456 BC)
April 6, 200917 yr This last weekend I gathered a list of movies that I hadn't seen but wanted to, then watched as many as I could. The Prestige - pretty good movie Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels - amazing movie, I've seen Snatch and new this one was very similar but never got around to watching it Snatch - after watching ^ I just had to, another amazing movie The Usual Suspects - pretty good movie, I didn't like it as much as I would've if I had watched this before I watched a lot of newer movies with similar plot twists or other thematic elements The Mating Habits of Earthbound Humans - I thought it was a hilarious movie, as I'm sure a lot of you guys would too...but it's one of those movies where if you like that type of comedy you'll enjoy it but if not you'll just think it was dumb. May the presents of our lord and savior, Santa, be with you this holiday season!First annual Clausmas - 2009 December 25

That's the Sinatra film right? If so, it's pretty good I agree. Yea, it's the Sinatra film. I haven't seen it before. I really should though, Preminger is incredible, and Sinatra in a somewhat tougher role, I think. So far the only films I've seen with Sinatra are the musicals and some other stuff. It's interesting, because Dan said (in his 50 albums thread) that he must've needed a stick to get the women away from him, but in the movies I've seen he's no ladies man at all. Often he's very shy and not very good with the women. In the end he always gets away with a woman, but not the one he originally aimed for. I'm sorry, Indy. :P I guess I'm not really a series man. I'm just not very good at watching them, it's probably the length. After a while I just get a little bored with most characters. I should continue watching though. But there's so much to see. April 7, 200917 yr thanks for the suggestions how2pk, i got them ordered. the archers are very precise indeed! =) recently saw wages of fear (english title of the french film) and mean streets. both excellent! i cant wait to check out clouzot's other stuff.

They do require a large amount of time to watch, which sucks, and things can get a little stale. BSG you don't have to worry about that though. Pretty much every half season (10 episodes) the show changes enough to keep fresh, but still keep the ultimate goal in mind (reach Earth). Season 1 has a few good episodes, but the series really starts to pick up in season 2. If you have the chance you should definitely try and finish it :) .
April 7, 200917 yr Just finished On the Waterfront. In my opinion, Marlon Brando's best performance of his career. "He could climb to it, if he climbed alone, and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder."

Good. :) Curious to what you think of them. Arigatô-san It seemed ages ago that I last seen a Japanese film (a few pinkies excluded). The new Hiroshi Shimizu box released by Criterions little brother Eclipse had to change that. I started with Mr. Thank You. It's about a ride in the bus of Mr. Thank You (they call him that because he's such a carefull driver and he always "Thank you!" after passing you), he's a sort of thing to hang on to in bad times, because he's so friendly and he always helps those in need of help. Anyway, we get a little insight on Japanese culture although that is more below the surface of the movie since Japan was in depression at the time and this movie is pretty joyous on first sight. Some laughs, a little romance and lots of nature (mountains, valleys etc). I also really liked the visuel motif of this movie: shooting from the front of the bus to dissolve into a rear view shot where you see the things you passed getting smaller. It may not be interesting the full length, but it's pretty touching and very relaxing movie. Signature by Maurice SendakWhen the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore!

Got the first two seasons, but I stopped at the last episode of season one, and never continued watching. : If you want to get into Glass, here's a nice thing to watch click. :) Oh yeah, I am so ordering that DVD, together with a few Glass CD's. You never stop to amaze me, How2PK, it's just incredible how broad your tastes and knowledge are. As for the BSG, hehe, I haven't really been profiling myself as a sci-fi fan here, I guess. I grew up with Star Trek, I was hung up on The Next Generation as a kid and I've seen quite a few sci-fi series since then. I don't consider myself a sci-fi fan as such, though, the only thing that really interests me in anything I watch is a good story, not whether it's in space with funny guns and funny-coloured aliens. But in sci-fi, it's often possible to explore storylines that might be touchy if they were situated in the here and now. BSG really puts a lot in question when it comes to humanity, power and greed, and in that respect, it is far more daring than other series could be. It's so amazing how well the characters are drawn, the story is compelling, it's not your average black and white, good versus bad war-story in space. And and and it has a female president, who isn't butch, who isn't a man-hating feminist nor a crazy megalomanian. A powerful, strong woman, who remains a woman. I haven't seen strong female characters like her on TV in like ever. Ik kan het echt niet genoeg bewieroken, ik ben zo verslaafd :D. Okay, i'm gonna shut up now :. But Indy's right, series 1 is introductory and great (so dark), but it only gets better as the story progresses. Although I'd have to admit, I'm not a fan of the love stories that are developped throughout the series. Except for one that makes me go *squee*. Ahem, anyway. Shutting.
April 7, 200917 yr Author Haha, you are funny, Sumpta. : But your enthusiasm works. I'll try to continue watching. Maybe I can catch the last episode of season one today. With a little luck I can even continue. Maybe it will even get me back into watching series. I still got 6.5 seasons of the West Wing. I got halfway trough the first season, loved it and never continued watching it. It's so stupid. Thanks for sharing that Hepburn interview by the way! Some great stuff. I loved the behind the scenes things at the start. :D Just to see her sit the way she does makes it worth it. With a little luck I can even continue. I was holding the DVD in my hand, but just as I wanted to put it in my DVD player that green Shimizu box started to smile at me. :-# Anma to onno (The Masseurs and a Woman) Ten minutes shorter than the Mr. Thank You film, and also ten times better. It's another ensemble picture, but this time there's more to the characters than in the previous movie (and that while it's shorter!). All of them are alone, and looking for a sort of recognition. We not only get to hear this, but Shimizu also works this out visually. Sometimes the movie made me think of Maya Deren's famous Meshes of the Afternoon the way the camera glides trough the locations without sound, the way the characters look at eachother without saying a word but we still know what they feel (which is a pretty unique thing in Japanese movies, for me at least), it creates a very special atmosphere. April 8, 200917 yr Aww, oh well, I understand. My brother forced his BSG on me, and I had the dvd's lying around for three months before I even considered watching them. Okay, I'll admit, the hot blonde on the cover made me think a bit too much of 7 of 9, you know, the resident hot alien who's only there to dazzle hormone-crazy geeks. I was prejudiced. But apart from that, I always feel it's difficult to begin watching a series because you know it will demand a lot of attention and effort to work yourself into it. But once that happens, I go in full addiction mode and simply have to watch till the very end even if it means short nights and temporary lack of a social life. How you can actually let go of a good series in the middle is beyond me :D. Although, I'd have to say, I used to really love Ally McBeal, but somewhere in the third series I just stopped watching, only to pick it up several years later. Now to get my hands on BSG series 4... And oh yeah, the interview. I almost fell out of my bed laughing at her dissing the carpet.
