I'd probably try it. As long as someone somewhere eats it and finds it acceptable I'll usually try it, I just won't eat "dare" foods and such.

I'd probably try it. As long as someone somewhere eats it and finds it acceptable I'll usually try it, I just won't eat "dare" foods and such.

I'd eat it, so long as I was aware of what it was. If I'd just eaten some sort of meat stew or something, and afterwards I was told "that was dog by the way" I'd probably be a but annoyed, I know that doesn't really make sense, but it's just the way my mind works

That is a ridiculous counterexample. The emotional bond between a human and a cow is not nearly the same as that between a human and a dog.

But you wouldn't have any emotional bond with the dog that you're eating. It would have been bred at a farm hundreds of miles away from you for the sole purpose of being turned into food, just like every other animal we eat.

Despite my intense dislike of cats, I can still respect that they are pets and very dear to some people on both a case by case basis and as a species. I could never eat cat either.

Ahh, the power of social stigma. In certain cultures around the world the cow is seen as sacred - which is a relationship beyond the level of a "house pet" if you ask me.

 

That being said, I'm iffy about eating anything out of the norm. It just seems safer and more practical to eat what's in the highest demand.

My point to the cow counterexample was that emotional interaction and dependence is reciprocated between dogs and humans because dogs have been specifically bred to do that. Cows, on the other hand, have not. Clearly the different variations of bovine species have not been bred as house pets or companions. While it is true that in some cultures cows are sacred, there is a difference between a companion and something that you worship.

Doesn't that completely run against the idea of argumentum hominem? You've just admitted to hating the person, not the action.

Hate is a pretty strong word. I don't hate them, I despise them. I suppose you're right in that sense, but through despising the action of eating dogs I despise the people that do it. In my eyes, they go hand in hand.

 

Edit: To be clear, I may despise something but I do believe in cultural relativism. Just because I do not like it, does not mean it is wrong for others to do it. I understand that my opinions are not going to influence someone from another culture to change his or her actions to fit my culture.
