Where do you guys usually find a good mine? I've found some reasonably large caverns, but not much ores to be found.

I personally just build my own quarry system to get ores, a 5x5 hole with stairs along the sides in a downward spiral. Usually that will hit a cavern after a few levels. If not I just dig tunnels off each side for more ore and more chances to hit caverns.

It actually only takes about 15-17 seconds to mine obsidian with a diamond pickaxe (50-60 seconds with anything else according to wiki, and you don't get anything that way). Still, it feels like forever. We're probably spoiled by everything else only taking a second or two to mine :P (besides redstone for some odd reason).

Finally fixed Fail Lake's currents, and I have my epic bridge built. Behold!

minecraftbridgeandminec.png

(yes, I realize it isn't that spectacular looking, but the time that went into it was considerable >.>)

Everything works up to the next station, which you can see on the hill in the distance. That one has lots of storage too, so I'm in the process of moving everything out of my spawn point base, and carting it to that station, where it'll all sit till I have my house built, hopefully near the mob tower that I'll build eventually. All connected with minecart tracks, hopefully.

I actually enjoyed building the minecart station. It's the first time I tried making a roof that wasn't just flat (and making the building a big box). Of course, I also spent half the time chasing down obnoxious mooing cows and falling into a cave system that happens to be right below the station, but still :P I enjoy building things.

Hopefully, I'll have the bridge up and running to get onto the mainland again (what you can see in the uppermost picture is actually an island the far station is on), and from there, the 0,0 coordinate. I'll be scouting out a spot for a house near it as well. Still don't know what style I want, though... I do have 512 blocks of mossy cobblestone, so I might use that for at least part of it.

That's how deep my mine is currently, now I've encountered a small cavern. Should I explore or keep going down?

You've gotta be joking. The second I try to go back to the bottom, I fall halfway down the shaft and die...then get spawned the other side of the map. <_<

At the bottom of my staircase is water 2 blocks deep. When I want to get to the bottom I drop into it.

That doesn't really matter if I can't get back there does it? :|

Great idea.

Aeon, making a staircase that large is a waste of time, and you will fall off it often. In the future, build a 2-by-1 shaft with ladders up one side. This conserves pickaxes and helps you get to the bottom faster, where all the good ores are.

I started building an underwater dome, and completely remodeled my underwater passageway. Then the game crashed, and loaded me in the same place with the same inventory, but deleted my recent buildings. Stupid "alpha".

Thats why I build my base on my spawn.

Then make a minecrart system to other satellite bases.

Just stumbled across a spider dungeon already filled with gravel so that the spiders that spawn there can't get out.

Just threw down a couple buckets of water and turned it into a trap. Now if only I could figure out how to get the string they drop...

Just so you guys know, once you build something up at the Skylimit, you will want a pool of water 3 blocks deep. I've learned the hard way. :3

Problem with a minecart is that I've got loads of hills round my area. :|

You could try digging tunnels through them. It'd take a while, but it's better than using iron to make boosters every time you want to go up a hill.

I tried to make a new underwater dome, but it was too deep so I died multiple times. I lost my first flint & steel, and when I went to get another I accidentally burned down the closest base, which happened to be a treehouse-style building made entirely of wood. Minecraft hates me.
