Generally, all of my homes that I build above ground have a balcony or something (or maybe just stairs/ladder up onto the roof) so I can sit up there and snipe the mobs that come near me. Always be wary of skeletons if you do that, though. Making the balcony high enough off the ground will prevent the spiders from getting at you, but skeletons can shoot you quite easily, they do have near perfect aim after all. They do have trouble shooting straight up, though. I tend to build a block high barrier around the outer edge of the balcony to hide from skeletons if needed, but that's up to you, since one could easily just retreat away from the edge of the balcony to avoid arrows. Oh, and don't do this if there's a cliff or anything nearby that mobs can jump off of onto it (common sense, but still, they're perfectly willing to half kill themselves jumping off of cliffs to get at you).

Alternatively, build a cactus fence. That generally keeps mobs from getting too close, and if they do get through the fence, they're already damaged at that point (or, instead of having each cactus one block apart, do it diagonally:

(assuming the forum code doesn't break it, anyway)

That'd be impenetrable, unless if they spawn on the inside of the fence >.> just have a single gap (maybe with a door or something) so you can get in and out. Personally, I don't bother with cactus fences, I tend to dig pitfalls and a trench around my house (at least two blocks deep, three and at least a 2x2 across hole for spiders I think, not completely sure on their jumping ability). They see you, run towards you, and drop into the trench and get stuck. Once morning comes around, just head out, kill off any creepers inside, drop in and grab the loot, etc etc. Of course, I've had skeletons shoot at me, hit a creeper, and BOOM there's a new crater in the side of my house before, though. Might be better to move the trench out further, in that case.

Of course, I'm thinking all simple stuff here. I'm sure there's more complex defenses, but I'm usually too lazy to bother with them :P oh, and that water door looks pretty cool, actually... hm...wonder how opaque water is, if it's fairly transparent I might use the water door idea and surround my house on all sides with it... >.>

EDIT: Of course, the forum breaks the ascii I was doing to show the cactus idea -.- hang on, I'll upload a screenie instead.

EDIT 2: Here's what I meant (and yes, I'm being ocd about showing what it is I'm talking about):

I've started building a multi-level castle in-land as opposed to out at sea. I've got a reed farm set up so I can create a library, just need to get a skeleton to kill a creeper for a record for my jukebox. then build a Abyssal floor, Watch-tower floor and then go back down build a basement, surrounding walls to my kingdom and I'm done and ready to slaughter some mobs. >:3

Well I finally bought this game. Problem is I haven't gotten anywhere in the Alpha version since every time I make a new world I can never find any coal ;_; Tried three different worlds so far, managed to make it to night time all three times without finding ONE coal rock.

So instead I just started playing around in the creative mode. I'm making marble sculptures :3

So when you die, you lose all the progress you've made in that world, including buildings and stuff you've made?

:wall: :wall: :wall:

No...

You only lose your items...

Your items drop on the ground, too. And be sure to build stuff near your spawn, and torches guiding you to any far-away base.

Here's a good tip:

Build a huge, stone tower that reaches up to the clouds near your base, and make sure you put a lot of torches on it. There's your pointer near your base. :shades:

Managed to run a server off of my computer for a bit. Friend wasn't on to try to join but I spent a few hours blowing stuff up with TNT. Apparently servers don't defaultly have a spawn teleport, so I had to use TNT to travel up. If anyone has any tips on how to add things like the spawn thing, they'd be helpful.

True vid is true.

I built my unholy portal to the Nether and brought back 3 stacks of Netherstone. Now wut i duz wiffit?

Netherstone can be lit on fire and burns forever. (Until you put it out.) Also since it is very weak, perhaps it can be used for Spleef Arena's in SMP or used to make underwater tube systems/bases for the clearing the water out portion.

Started this game yesterday, some guys on my WoW guild have been going on about it so I gave in. Made some tools, shelter, all that good stuff. First time into a cave system ever, came up with a tons of Iron and Coal, a good amount of Gold, 3 stacks of Redstone Ore and 7 Diamonds. Just been messing around with water lately though, may try a water slide or lazy river sort of thing around my house..

Expecting a good life because you're a good person is like expecting a bull not to charge because you're a vegetarian.

wat. Took me weeks to even find 3. <.<

Many believe that the 1980 eruption of Mt. Saint Helens was a catostrophic geological event, in reality it was the day that Jimi Hendrix returned to Earth from the next world and actually stood up next to a mountain and chopped it down with the edge of his hand.

Yeah that cave system is ridiculous. I skipped half the Redstone I saw and still came up with over 200 pieces. I made 2 Diamond Picks and a Shovel, I guess I just got really lucky..

Jesus [bleep]ing [cabbage] man, I've been playing on my latest world all week and only found four diamonds, one redstone (the rest fell into lava), and four gold. I did find a lot of iron though, I've always been lucky with that.

Make impractical but cool-looking torches.

And about that TIF server... is anyone going to actually make it?

Roses are red,

Violets are blue.

This line doesn't rhyme,

And neither does this one.
