03-Apr-2013 - Dungeoneering Dual Wielding and Charming Imp

Featured Replies

Really.. Chickens? If a person has drygores, they aren't going to be stupid enough to use them at chickens. They will use them where they provide a clear and undeniable advantage over the competition. This is the case in ALL areas of pvm (bar a select few such as Armadyl and DKS for obvious reasons).

My bad, I should have said goblins. You know since all areas of pvm count.

Obviously, drygores cost the most, have the biggest stats, and you gotta show your manhood and use them everywhere.

Forgot the cheap stuff like choatic weapons, royal crossbows, and godswords.

This is runescape, competition is what you wear, not what you do in castle wars on w48.

Drygores are the best.

  • Yes, because picking up charms was a genuine challenge and not just an inconvenience that we're better off without.

He just managed to show his ignorance and troll all of us(including me, since i'm replying) in one short post with little intelligence. Big props to him.

Gunna just leave this here and not bother anymore.

Ignoring the facetious argument above I hear the charm imp maybe a little broken, as in he doesn't always give you the charms you want him to collect or he doesn't pick them up at all. Can anyone confirm this?

He picked them up for me when I last tried him :) I told him not to give me golds and greens, didn't get them. But I wasn't at a high density charm monster, so I don't know much more than that.

I have had no problems with the charm collector at Glacors.

Okay. Just making sure. I heard from a clan member or two, and someone in the hyt chat that he wasn't. but maybe that's not a problem anymore.

Not interested in the previous drift, so responding to replies on something I posted earlier, concerning abyssal/vine whip...

Dharok's greataxe/Godsword.

C'mon, man... if you've played other games, at best, the whip's strength was disarming an opponent (NWN1 is one example I can think of.) It's not going to be equivalent to a blade, ever.

^This if you mean a literal 2h whip it just does not make sense. A whip isn't a two handed device; everything about it's design and use makes it 1 handed.

Well, if you want to get truly nitpicky and realistic-- yes, whips are wielded one-handed in real life. But with the possible exception of the Chinese chain whip, most are not even practical combat weapons. Real whip stunts don't include off-hand weapons or shields, either; whips need distance to even be effective in combat situations.

Looking over the Attack, Strength, and Defense abilities over and over again, I changed my mind. A whip doesn't seem to fit any of them well at all. But players seem to be waiting for dual-wield whips, and since Jagex says they can't animate an off-hand whip yet, we got a modified Excalibur. I tend to think the whip should just be modifed in some way instead of trying to come up with an off-hand version.

While the plain abyssal whip was relied on for speed, EoC neutered that benefit and eliminated the original benefits of the vine whip. Chances to poison and effective poison damage are much different now that they are bound to quaffed potions, not weapon application. Vine call special was area effect damage + poison, that is not effectively replicated by Abilities and Thok-style poison.

Ignoring the facetious argument above I hear the charm imp maybe a little broken, as in he doesn't always give you the charms you want him to collect or he doesn't pick them up at all. Can anyone confirm this?

I haven't seen any real problems yet-- it was especially a boon to me using it at Waterfiends riding out a Familiarisation triple charms boost. Got 300+ crimsons where I'd normally average around 150. I have him set to keep golds, and in all the Slayer tasks I've done, I seemed to get blues, crimsons, and greens okay.

That is why I went and bought off-hand Drygore mace.

Buying them before they go up in price.

Highly doubt they will go up much, 1m max I estimate.

Still a start :>

So, another noob question from me, but why is it that Jagex can't animate an offhand whip exactly?

Something about it looking too awkward. Realistically, how are you supposed to control this long tangly thing with just one hand? Especially if you have two of them? You're more likely to wrap yourself and end up looking like some kind of mummy.

So, another noob question from me, but why is it that Jagex can't animate an offhand whip exactly?

It has to do with the skeleton of the character. The right arm has more joints than the left arm, and the whip animation needs them.

This plus the fighting stance.

How it is setup the front (off-hand) arm can't really swing/flick a whip in a quick practical way without a move that would very obviously lash your round the face and/or tangle it with the whip in the rear hand.

It'd be impractical to create a unique stance just for whips off-hands as it'd be really complicated to make it work with all the slight variants of main-hand posing plus whilst the animations vary the basics rely on the attack/defend being roughly in same place to look like they marry up. Plus it'd be wasted labour and rendering power to add more skeletal structure to the front arm just for the sake of 1 weapon..

Just keep the same graphics and have the whip hit you in the face every attack, dealing massive recoil damage. Simple. It's already a shitty weapon that nobody wants anymore, might as well put some more nails in the coffin

Ugh this kind of view annoys me no end.

This is not Jagex or Runescape specific flaw it is the very nature of constantly updated MMORPGs. Content has to be added to pre-existing things, for it to not be wasted dev time it either has to equal an existing piece (to be an alternate), plug a hole or be the new best thing. The later two obviously make things easier and there in lies the nature of the MMORPG lifecycle, content either has to stagnant or become easier - the compensation is the addition of new top end stuff and entirely new game portions that add new difficulties which in time will become eased and so no and so forth.

If you don't like games where things get easier to do over the years don't play an MMORPG, especially not one where the process is faster due to weekly updates go play Assasins Creed or Skyrim or something where it all stays exactly the same forever more.

I'd like a glimmer for smaller items. Things like seeds can be hard to see in many areas.

Yes, because picking up charms was a genuine challenge and not just an inconvenience that we're better off without.

Idk Alg, I had a BLAST taking 5 seconds out of every waterfiend kill to go pick up my crimsons /sarcasm.

The problem is that without that time spent picking charms up, killing WFS for example is now over 450k att/str/def xp/hr, as well as being very good for charms. Combined with daggs for mage/defence, they've turned combat skills into a joke. WFS could really use a defence buff making it much harder to melee them and forcing the player to use their weakness (ranged). I agree picking charms up was a pain in the ass, but they appear to have over looked the effect this has had on xp rates, which definitely needs addressing.

Someone should point out to them that killing WFS (including the HP xp and charms) is actually more productive than buying spins for melee xp! Should get them nerfed pretty quickly :)

Asmodean <3

Waterfiends were so much fun before the charm collector. You had to click so much and so accurately to pick up the charms between attacks to avoid losing any ticks. With how carefully and quickly you had to make decisions, it felt like hunter. It was so great.

So if I ever kill wfs again, I won't use the charm imp.

Agreed, the charm gatherer is not great, the difference with prayer urns, bonecruncher and herbicide is that none of those produce items, so it's only a way to get some xp from stuff you would otherwise leave behind. The charming imp is a way to make high-attention scaping a ton easier, but easier usually means less interesting as well. It's not like anyone's going wild about the massive fun of updates like ivy & runespan & charming imp, it's mostly about how much easier the game gets. And while there is a reason to make max & comp achievable for anyone, given time, there should still be a reward for high-attention scaping. Runecrafting obviously lacks that, but now so does charm gathering, and that is by far the greatest part of summoning.
