Urza285
Progress update for those interested: Hi everyone' date=' It’s nearly two weeks since the HTML5 closed beta began, so we wanted to talk about how it’s been going and discuss our plans for the next few weeks. Even with such an early beta, the response from testers has been great and really helpful for us. On the first day alone, the HTML5 client logged over 100,000 sessions. You've also submitted thousands of bug reports, and we've gathered lots of data about lag and frame rate. This will be invaluable for improving the stability and performance of the client. Working with emerging technologies like HTML5 and WebGL is exciting for us, but also a bit nerve-wracking! RuneScape is the first browser game of its size and complexity using this technology, and while we’re proud to be pioneers in this field, it also makes development a real challenge. We really appreciate you helping us. Right now, we’re focussing on fixing the crashes and other major bugs. We expect, after another week or two, that the worst bugs will be fixed and you’ll have a much more stable client to test. Fixes are being released frequently, so it’s worth keeping an eye on Mod Chris E’s HTML5 Beta patch notes thread in the Beta Feedback and Discussion forum if you're playing the beta. In a couple of weeks, we’ll turn our attention towards optimising the client. Right now ,the lag and low frame rate are making the beta awkwardly slow for some players, which obviously gets in the way of a fun experience. Interestingly, performance isn’t just affected by how powerful your computer is - even seemingly small differences in graphics driver or computer spec can have a big impact on frame rate. Similarly, some in-game locations can run fine, but others can really lag the client. These are examples of the issues we have to iron out, and demonstrate why your feedback is so useful. We’re confident we’ll get there – we’ve seen certain mid-spec PC configurations which run the HTML5 client at a good frame rate, so we're on the right track! Over the next few weeks we’ll also be working through fixing the graphical glitches; making sure all of the game’s water looks right, and that all the sky environments are properly implemented. The water you see in the beta client now is created with only a basic version of our new water shaders, and you’ll see further improvements as we implement more of this new technology. Last week we also launched the first alpha version of the New Interface System. Your feedback has been superb – very constructive, creative and insightful. Mod ThatJim has posted in the NIS Feedback and Discussion forum with an outline of the features the team are tackling next based on your suggestions. More information to come when the NIS alpha build is updated later this week. It’s still early days, and the HTML5 client has significant improvements to come in the next few weeks and months. You’re helping bring this new technology to life and making RuneScape a better experience, so thanks to all who’ve got involved! Mod Pips If you want to find out even more about the RuneScape Beta Programme, why not come to our next Around the Campfire event this Wednesday? JMods from the beta team will be there to answer your questions on all things HTML5. So, join Mods Conor, Brain and Chris E, along with the Community Management team, on 1st May 16:00 GMT – we’ve set up a forum thread with more information here. Sbrideau
Lol they say they've seen some mid end pc configurations with decent framerate, funny because my i3 with Nvidia gtx 550ti has about a framerate of 2 and my laptop (i7 with gtx 460m) has about 15 fps. Birdd
I like the Alpha so far, if Jagex does it right it has alot of potential. As for the HTML beta, I tried it the first day and was super laggy, I just re-loaded it.. Does it have to load each individual object for everyone else? Which takes about 30-45 seconds? Quite a hassle. Hope it doesn't stay that way. [spoiler=Levels]

Instead of pausing you until it loads, it slowly loads in everything around you as it gets downloaded. Slow loading is likely a connection issue. However, once it does it, it should be a lot faster in future logins. Most objects should only need to be loaded once and then should load nicely afterwards, from what I've seen. lcchs
I think everyone would love to try playing html 5 but the fps is stuck around 5. Crowded areas go down to 1, so its not really playable. At least they learn from their eoc experience and we can gain xp from playing html 5.
Matey
I logged in to the RS forums and noticed that I could see the alpha forum, so it turns out I can access the NIS alpha. I'm right in thinking that it's not open to everyone? I haven't received an invitation in my message center or e-mail (yes, I checked my spam folder)... Oh well. I had a little play around and it seems like a decent start. The bank screen doesn't seem to want to scale to fill the empty space on my screen. Any way to fix this? To hell with humanity; The more I see, the less I believe.
Sbrideau
i3 with GTX 550? that seems rather disproportionate...Yeah but I did buy it when my 9800GT died a few years ago. I usually keep the graphics card when I build a new computer though I'm not sure I'm going to do it for my next build. On some games the bottleneck is significant, because of the processor, but other times I can see the graphics card working at 95% of it's power. I think at least doing things in tandem would be appreciated, but that could be more than just wishful thinking. The thing is they ARE doing them in tandem of sorts.A lot of this issue atm isn't do with optimisation - other than a certain GPU's it is optimised pretty well.It is the bugs and crashes that are slowing down the FPS for a lot of people. Many people via the bug fixes have seen the FPS quadruple or more (eg I gone from 5fps average to 20 fps average [which fyi is higher than I get on live game on my mac]) It's keep to remember in the kinda lingo they use optimisation =/= make the fps better in a literal sense; it more specifically means honing things that are operating correctly but are not doing so as efficiently as they should for specific hardware setups. Much of the current fps issues don;t remotely fall in to this category as they are caused by things operating incorrectly. The very nature of this means it would be redundant to start optimising now, as you may just be wasting time on something that wouldn't be an issue if bugs were not eating cpu/gpu usage up.
