Plagiarism - Don't be jerks, I was just making a point.

Recommended Posts

Hello, my name is Kashi and I'm hear to speak to you about plagiarism. (play-jer-izum).

Some of you (probably not) may have

read/heard of/used the pages as cigarette papers

of a fiction series titled "The Belgariath". Well a friend of mine recommended that I read it, and even let me borrow Book 1 out of her private collection. Now I wont say it was fantastic, but it was certainly good, and unlike any other book I'd ever read in the same genre. I'd suggest you pick up a copy at your local library.

The real purpose of this post is that, as I was reading the book I came across a few names that seemed awfully familiar. As in, names that had appearined in RuneScape. Here are just a few.

Faldor - A farm where the main character grew up. Compare to "Falador".

Trellheim - A mountainous region where another character was born. Compare to "Trollheim".

Barak - A viking-style warrior who always wears furs. Compare to "Baraek", a Varrock fur merchant.

Durnik - The blacksmith of Faldor's farm. Compare to "Derrik", the blacksmith of Miscellania.

Torak the Accursed - Main bad guy. Compare to "Torag the Corrupted".

I'm not saying anything, I just think that's a few too many coincidences to be ignored. There are probably more, since I'm only about halfway through the book. If I find any I'll update this. Lock it if you feel necessary, I've sort of lost interest.

EDIT: Ugh .. don't cite other examples of this please, since you're all being sarcastic. I'm not talking about them taking the name of the governor of Georgia or stealing Romanian heritage. I just thought it would be a bit too coincidental for all those names to be so similar and not have any prior knowledge of etc. (run on sentence).

Like a ninja, here I was, gone I am now.

BUT! I may be back! Add my new account, Dr Bloodveld!

God I hate you. Alot. :)

I'd like to add:

Torak the Accursed - Main bad-guy in the book.

Compare to "Torag the Corrupted".

jagex sample things all the time, often doing so so that you have to read the book/watch the film/be english to have a clue what they are talking about. this just happens to be another source for them.

Back by popular demand!

And I guess I just wanted to tell you, as the light starts to fade, that you aree the reason, that I am not afraid, and I guess I just wanted to mention, as the heavens will fall, that we will be together soon if we will be anything at all.

Right, for one the serie is called: "The Belgariad" you're getting mixed up with "Belgarath" one of the main characters.

I've read all 5 books of The Belgariad, then the Sequel to that series: The Mallorean.

Also The Elenium/The Tamuli, more series by David Eddings, basically i've read everything he's written.

I can see where you're coming from with these links, but I highly doubt it's plagiarism. Jagex being a company has to abide by rules, and could get fined for stealing content without permission, they'd have too much to lose for names as such.

It's probably just complete coincidence, the majority of the names go way back in History,"Barak" for example, the basic Viking Barbarian if you want to stereotype it, the Norse used names like that for their people, they're just regional.

For example, you're more likely to find a lad in America or the UK called John, than in somewhere like China, it's regional

Good taste in reading though :D

ok while browsing a guide of the city burgh de rott , i couldn't help noticing that 80% of the inhabbitants there have typical romanian names (victor , catalina , calin , razvan ,vasile and more)

if they made any connection between the social/economical status of my country and burgh de rott( i mean the citisens there are the poorest and u know ... ) ................... well ............... jagex has made a HUGE mistake :(

and i DO know some people whose names are the same with the inhabbitants of that city , and they would be mad ..... (my name is the male vresion of catalina)

anyway soz if i made gramatical errors and stuff

feel free to flame my personal oppinions :ohnoes:

I'VE READ THEM TOO! (except I didn't get into the Elenium and Tamuli)

Kashi, I get what you're saying because I noticed that too when I first started to play this game (now I dont play but that's besides the point). The most obvious one was Faldor and Trellheim. Just wondering but have you read all of them including the Mallorean?

Those books ring a bell... I might have read one or maybe even the entire series... Anyway, loads of games do it so I don't really care if Jagex does it.

2146 overall - 136 combat - 6 skillcapes

Plus I think the whole teenage girl thing will end soon (hopefully), because my girlfriend is absolutely in love with him(she is 18), and im beginning to feel threatened by his [Justin Bieber] dashing looks.

A famous person who's name escapes me once said "There's nothing new under the sun."

I've never heard an original rap or R&B song, they ALL "sample"

It isn't plagerism if it isn't exactly word for word or if it is intended as parody or is overtly obvious. I think its BattleMech??? RPG that has an entire Corp named after Bukaroo Banzai and its characters.

Its just conincidnece mostly

I mean there are only so many random combinations of letters that can be put together to make something easily pronoucable for fantasy names etc

Plv6Dz6.jpg

Operation Gold Sparkles :: Chompy Kills ::  Full Profound :: Champions :: Barbarian Notes :: Champions Tackle Box :: MA Rewards

Dragonkin Journals :: Ports Stories :: Elder Chronicles :: Boss Slayer :: Penance King :: Kal'gerion Titles :: Gold Statue

While reading the Epic "Beowulf," I realized something familiar in RuneScape...

The Blue Dragon dungeon in Taverly

The last scene in Beowulf, when he fights the dragon, and dies, he is in a room filled with treasure...

The Taverly dungeon has gold on the ground, Coincidence =p?

through history it seems all dragons protect gold or some treasure. I'm sure most everyone here has read The Hobbit...It seems like dragons and treasure depend on each other...

I kind of like the references that Jagex puts into RS. We all know of "I should call him... mini-pig." and some of ther references to books, movies and stories. Plus, having to write stories in English I'd base some characters on characters in movies, books and games and whatnot. It's just things people do...

I doubt it can be called plagiarism because it's not a direct spoof or copy of the book series. But good eyes for spotting those things.
