Hi there, I just have a couple of questions to sig makers here in the forums... :-k

Most of the questions I have concerns pixelers mostly, though might apply to other forms of styles.

1.) Is there anyone at all left in this forum that wants to do pixel work for free?

What motivates you to make a pixel work for free, even though there are other forums that you can go and sell your talent?

3.) If you are able to make other types of signature, like abstract, or vector, etc... Why don't you make some for people for free every now and then?

4.) Is there anyone in here interested in bringing back the Tip.it community Pixel signature collabs?

If you guys remember, it was Aldurion's (I think) and we kinda just lost interest and everyone stopped working on it.

You dont have to answer any questions that do not apply to you, or if you do not want to.

The reason I made this primarily is because there are alot and I mean alot of requests out there for sigs and stuff.

I know some of people who requests stuff can be a little inconsiderate, but there are some who just want a piece of work that they can use. :?

For example, if no one wants to do pixels for free anymore, then why don't we just ban Pixel related requests?

I mean, no one wants to do them, and all the threads do is take up space... :-X

1.) Well, if I did a signature (aplying this to whatever, not pixeling) I would do it for free, yes.

2) Mostly the fact I don't play the game anymore. If I did make something it would indeed be for free.

3) This is also retaining to the first two, but mostly because I'm busy. I also generaly don't like having to adhere to someones rules on what they want in a signature, I'd much rather make one and give it away.

4) N/A for me.

5) To be honest it seems a bit... I don't know, too welcoming. I used to think of this place as a somewhat "intermediate" graphics place where a lot of the pixels we see today would just be referenced to as "a joke" as in they were litteraly jokes. I'm not sure what to really do about this, but I do think that we are a bit too forgiving of some of these... "things" people are making. I'm not saying everyone has to be very tallented, obviously that won't happen, but I was just hoping that we could get away from the "look I did this pixel IN ALL PAINT!!" and it turns out to be some scribbled sword.

6) Man, overdid my self. Pretty much relate to that above question. Its not to say that there are still some very high quality things being posted, but I generaly see more threads around now devoted to first pixel signatures or the likes. I don't think it's near the quality we had here a while ago.

Cartoons. Yeah I guess they're good sometimes. Ive seen quite alot of funny ones myself.

Not a lot of people makes cartoon-ish sigs in here though. On forums like RSC maybe, but tip.it has been mostly Abstract and pixels as far as I can remember.

Heck there are more buddy makers here than Cartoon sig makers!

Cartoons can proabably alliviate some demand for sigs if someone makes a shop. :-k

1) Indeed, if I had the motivation to actually finish signatures within a reasonable time frame that doesn't span months, then I would offer signature-sized pixels for free. Sadly, I tend to lose interest in pixels and drop them after a few weeks, and I don't particularly want to do that to someone who I promised a pixel to. So... it's a sort of a yes/no answer. :|

2) Technically I kind of said yes, so I'll answer this too. :P If I make a pixel for someone else, it has and always will be free because it is against JaGEx's rules to sell them for ingame GP. I ain't risking my account, because I'm paranoid like that, and because as a player mod I'm going to have to abide to the rules I help enforce.

3) N/A. I'm terrible at everything else. :D

4) I'm interested, but I'm not too familiar with the procedures of the pixel sig collabs, so if it's too big a part I have to contribute to, again, I don't want to have to commit myself to something big if I'm going to drop it halfway through. :|

5) Oooh, this is a hard one as I've only just recently been active-ish in the Gallery and sort of only drop by once in a while at the Art Bazaar. From what I've seen, though, the veterans of the Gallery (and digital art in general) are pretty welcoming and give some good quality c/c, whilst those who are 'less new' to the Gallery and have decent graphics skills tend to be very critical of those who are just beginning pixelling or abstract-ing, and give very little, if any, c/c at all. The Gallery is never boring if there are new works to take a look at - I quite enjoy loitering in other people's topics as watching the progress is fun in its own right.

The Art Gallery, as I've said before, I have comparatively less experience in than in the Gallery. Judging from the few times I've been there, it seems to be packed with those who want signatures (pixels in particular), and none of their requests are being fufilled, so it feels a little... neglected?... as a forum.

6) Nadril's pretty much summed it up in his answer to Q5, but I'll reiterate here as I'm bored and don't really have much motivation to do much else. ><

The quality has indeed dropped a little since JaGEx banned signature selling. I think this is because those artists (pixellers in particular) who were quite promising and constantly produced high-quality work and were willing to learn from the c/c have left the Gallery, as they see no profit or reward from creating signatures anymore.

Of course, there are always those excellent signature makers that are still here, and I take off my hat to them.

5) I think there is a pretty good atmoshpere exept there are some people that flame to much and spam alot <.<

6) Also pretty good, BUT there are way to many newcomers that always want to post there first "pixel" and that becomes a bit anoying becuase in 9 of the 10 times they are realy bad :(

And about the pixel requests: they (almost) always want pk scenes and no1 want to make those because Way to many people already requested them <.< If there are some original idea's and they ask it kind then i think there will be more pixel requests made : so... if there is a way that can help this problem... :pray:

All those were free. But I had to stop making them... :cry:

also i already said it on eckereds topic... maybe we should start a topc on the art bazaar were pixel makers can put there free avvy's and sig's on and that people that want one of those can ask it and that we give it awey like that... just an idea but maybe worth trying :-w also i'm working on a fairly big pixel work (already done a 1024x768 last week) and maybe ill give it awey.

I don't think there are people left who do quality pixels for free. Sure, I make freestyle random pixels sometimes, and if I don't end up auctioning them, I give em away. Only happend once though.

Perhaps Godslayer, but he doesn't roam runescape forums anymore.

The sig I gave away was made in a period I didn't really play rs anymore, so I had no use for rs money. It's a shame to see so much work go to waste, so why not make someone happy with it.

Every now and then I have some premade sigs I give away, but this is mostly at my clanforum.

I find it rather passive, but that might just be me. Low quality sometimes, but it is a free runescape board afterall, everyone is welcome to post his 'art'. There are some good initiatives, but not enough participants to keep them alive.

As I said, sometimes it's just low quality. Mainly on pixelsigs. People who just get started on these don't realize the effort and time which should be put in, and make a sloppy drawing, without thinking about shading etc.

Ever since the sigmarket was closed, alot of people left, and the decent standard of work we had here went down.

How do you feel about the general atmosphere of the Gallery and the Art Bazaar? I feel that it has lost its community feel. People used to help each other out instead of just criticizing work (different from c/c). Folks would try new things, new forms of art and work at improving their skills ie, use Photoshop to the limit. Now you see pretty much the same thing posted over and over. As for the Art Bazaar, it used to be that folks actually made sigs for free...perhaps they felt more generous when there were people paying money for them... now no one wants to do anything for free it seems.

I don't think the forum is welcoming, but it is also not hostile... it is just kind of there...

The quality of work has declined from back in the day. But that is really not a fair statement as the reference is to individuals that have practiced art in rl and on the forum for quite some time. I feel everyone here has the potential to be great. It is all a matter of drive and interest.

Eh?

Don't do pixels, but there isn't anyone left who does the quality of pixels that people want. People like Kinkydave, GS, TJ, TH, Caskade even, all went to forums like RSC, MHM, and other clan fourms where sig selling is allowed, and found a thriving community, unlike here.

I am looking to start up a shop soon, now that i've got an eight week holiday, but i don't like making sigs for people that don't use them, as i found that that happened alot in my old shop. I occaisonally give out sigs on GU, because it has few members and it feels as if we're all mates.

It is bad, completly lost it's comnity feel, exactly what Auldron said. When the Media Market closed we lost all our talented and respectable artists, along with their decent c/c. The only decent pixeler around still is really terley, and mxm of course, with the occasional appearence of DH. The Gallery feels very begginerish, i never post my work here anymore because of the rubbish c/c that i get, i get much better on Chaos GFX and GU. I think that the board as a whole lacks the effort and patience required to make a decent sig.

As i said after the MM closed, the quality of the work went straight downhill, and to be honest the pixels that are coming out are crap, apart form TJ and such. And don't get me started on buddies, thank god the up surge of them got queled a bit by the sticky. i dont "want" to, but i dont mind doing the occasional, because i dont play. actually the reason for that is im working on my own "rpg", and am quite buisy with that.

the gallery is dead in my oppinion. i reammmember a while ago, new people coming in and out, godslayer was here, ter was more active, random was here, so was that "punkage" girl, many a pixler left through the thought of making profits irl, or in runescape.

not sure if this is really the place for this, but i think we should bring back sig selling. even though it breakes jagexes rules, it also brings many newcomers to the forum, and will bring all of the pixelers back (imo). it would be great because then all of the pixelers who keep going to rsc would stay here instead.

again, just my oppinion.

(also, i find more clan support to bring people to a forum too...)

:| I don't check out the Bazaar. The Gallery. Eh. It's probably not as welcoming as it used to be, to newcomers.. But if they don't get hot-headed over some strict C/C, they usaully become respected members.

No, I never work for free anymore... I use other forums... I post here just because its habit... I almost never C\C things anymore because 99% of the time I could go on for half an hour going over stupid things like default colors... I try and get C\C myself and instead get a ton of "wow looks good" Bs... that isn't C\C... thats a waste of time and a person thinking +1 post count please

As said above I don't give sig for free; my reason being that I spend at least an hour on the smallest of avatars... Over 6-12 hours on a signiture... I am not going to waste that massive amount of time for no reward...

I have PS but I dislike that kind of signiture (even though I use one, it was just because [i think it was lp or random] Did such a killer job and i liked the artwork)

For what point and purpose?? So I can spend hours squinting at a moniter to create a sig that A. I won't use or B. Won't gain anything from...

Terrible really, Nothing much worth coming here for... There are a few of the old mates here but they are above C\C'ing and then there are a few of the nubiles who need so much C\C its not even funny...

As said above, when we used to have alot of good pixel'ers then it was easy to get great C\C on a person's work... Now its pretty dam hard to even get posts... We had about 60%-40% ratio of people who knew how to pixel... you wanna see some good work... jump to some of the pages after 190... now that is decent C\C and pixeling

Worshippers, "omg thats nice" nearly No C/C. Then there are flamers. Thats why I suggest Runescape Media forum. Lots of good pixelers and stuff around there, all RS based. Friendly atmosphere there.

Yes, I've seen a few. Not me however, don't have the time to make all the sigs I'd like to make for free. I barely can make myself one when I find an idea I really want to make.

Practice, to help someone who really needs. Made one avatar for the SODB group because I could tell they were real strong, and lasted long, so an avatar to destinguish them was nice. Otherwise, I have no motivation to make a request for free, that's 1 month of work for someone I don't even know, it would have to be a really good friend and a really good idea. People who even attempt to push that on me are ignored.

Less motivation to make artwork since sigselling's gone but it's amazing people still have shops and offer sigs for free, that's cool. Don't blame anyone for not making pixel requests, doing all that work for free for someone you don't know is tough and makes you wonder why.

Some work is really amazing, but people should wait a bit longer before posting their very first work. Some people should compare themselves less to others and more towards their own older work when trying to improve. :)

It varies alot.

Some people get irritable, impatient and sometimes just come across as arrogant. There are many posts consisting of just "MAk Mine Now?!" when they know there's a waiting list.

Personally, I think the Art Bazaar should just be a sub-forum of The Gallery.

Again, it varies.

You get the casual, willing-to-learn type who will post there first work and will take advice and use it. Then there is others (no naming names ;)) who just post their work, flame anyone who doesn't like it and doesn't get any better.

To be honest, if you aren't going to take advice then don't post. Just asking for ratings is merely just a quick ego boost.

One last question you should have included;

How do you feel about the quality of criticisms being posted on the forum?

Criticisms play a major role in getting any better. If people never criticised, i'd never be as good as I am now. If you search for old posts of me as the author at The Gallery, you'll see what I mean. I used to use filter piles all the time but as soon as I was criticised and told to use brushes, I gave them a go.

Comments are nice, criticisms are much better.

How do you feel about the quality of criticisms being posted on the forum?

There's some that write out full CC's which are awsome to see, which I think is fairly good considering this is just an RS forum gallery and not a gfx only forum. Short comments are encouraging, they may not help specifically but at least you sort of get an idea of what people liked or didn't like. Personally I wish I had time to write out full CC's on many pieces but when I post a short comment it'll be fairly specific to a cetain area of the sig that really needs changing.

i ocasionly do requests and thwe such, but i mainly prefer to be only limited by me, as oposed to what someone else wants. with requests i only do them if i have the time, think its a good idea and think i will get gratitude and useage back in return, no point working on something you dont enjoy, in the same way of working on something and not getting anything back...

2.) If you answered Yes to the first question, then please answer this too.

What motivates you to make a pixel work for free, even though there are other forums that you can go and sell your talent?

i rarely play runescape and dont see alot of point doing stuff for game credits, id rather do something ill enjoy, of corse if theres both avalible ill go for that, also i dont like entering comps, theres not much security of you winning, and so it can feel pointless. also there can be alot of frustrating waiting to get the prices youd like for your work, and isnt really worth the effort to be frank

3.) If you are able to make other types of signature, like abstract, or vector, etc... Why don't you make some for people for free every now and then?

i can do photomanips and 3d modeling, as well as the opasinal other types (poorly ill add) with photo manips again, i prefer to be free to do what i like as oposed to limited by someone elses requests and 3d modeling takes quite a while, and i just find its not worth it...

4.) Is there anyone in here interested in bringing back the Tip.it community Pixel signature collabs?

If you guys remember, it was Aldurion's (I think) and we kinda just lost interest and everyone stopped working on it.

yeah i am, was thinking about this recently and just starting a new topic about a pixel colab, but we curreently have the iso grid that needs to be finished by the end of the year or im dead :ohnoes: so yeah, next year im all for it :

im fairly used to it being what it is and dont have alot of emotion regarding it, however i recon it could be fairly scary for new commers (as with most things) alot of people flame their work or they can get off to a wrong foot, which is offputting and bad, however that oftwen dont read the rules about first works and the such, which is one problem. i havnt really had any problems with flaming as of recent, however i remember when i was new (when dinosaures roamed the earth, and computers were meanly magic stones) i didnt get the warmest welcome, however im still here, but i have just left a few rtimes when its just got boring or whatever, however at the moment i look set to stay on for a while. the only things preventing me from visiting here is school work which i can see getting hecktic in the near future.

6.) Again this is for everyone.

some is decent, some is avarge and some is poor, it varies alot and thats good. it means people of all stages can feel invloved. theres only a few artists here who are really good at what they do, terly, mxm, cad to name a few, they give people a hope of what they can achive, then theres the avarage, whats more realistic and what people are at, this is good and it has the opurtinity for good CCing and the such, and of corse theres the poorer work, some is, to be blunt, crap, however its where alot of new commers will be at, really we need to be more posative to this grounp as oposed to just the ave group. just see it from their view, they are generaly younger people, more nervous, posably new to forums and the such, i was once, and it can be off putting having people flamming your work, they may have workwed hard at it, but because of varies limits of being young it isnt great, thats the perfect opurtunity to encourage someone and give them guiding pointers. dont expect anyone to be perfect and in that 'near perfect' group, judge them acourding to what group they fall under.

I dont make it for free, nor do i make it for rs money, i do graphic design for my school.

i find it... somewhat useless, people psot great criticism alot, but generally its ignored as the person seems to not care, the words say "CC", but the meaning is "say your thoughts, if you fdont like it go away." like how on one thread, i lefet a neutral opinion, then someone flamed me, and he hanked the person for flaming me.

meh, ive seen FAR better most of the time... but ive seen some great stuff here, like PJB's WTF collection (as i call it)
