Da Pirates
A boy of 13 hanged himself with his school tie after his father confiscated a computer game. Jake Roberts wanted to play it on his Nintendo Wii console but couldn't because his sister was watching TV. An argument developed and when his father confiscated the game Jake stormed to his room. Hours later he was discovered hanging from his bed by his father. The talented teenager, described as a sensitive boy with a fantastic imagination enjoyed writing stories and poems and even had one verse published after his school entered it into a competition. The inquest heard evidence from Jake's devastated parents, Andrea and John, who lived with their son and daughter in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Mrs Roberts a bank clerk, became tearful as she recalled how her son had stormed off to his room after being told he could not play on the game. She said: 'We gave him some money for his birthday so he went out and bought a computer game. 'When he came back he wanted to play it but his sister was using the television. 'He had a temper tantrum and stormed off upstairs.' Mr Roberts, a printer, said: 'The first thing I saw when I walked in to Jake's bedroom was all the paper he had ripped up on the floor during his tantrum. 'The door was open with his bed to my left behind the door. I was going to tell him off when I turned. It took me a few seconds to register what I was seeing.' 'His school tie was round his neck and he was hung from his cabin bed. I tried to lift him and his tie was attached to a bar on the bed.' An ambulance was called and Jake was rushed to Scarborough Hospital, but he was pronounced dead two days later as a result of hanging. Mr Roberts continued: 'I honestly don't think he meant to hang himself. I think he was mad about the computer game and just did something stupid.' Mrs Roberts added that the family had watched an episode of the BBC drama Casualty together weeks, before which had featured a young person hanging themselves. She said: 'It did occur to us a few weeks after this happened that we had seen a Casualty programme on a Saturday night at about 8pm. 'This had shown a hanging. I know I was really shocked they had shown it at that time. 'But I don't think anything he had seen influenced him. When he was younger he had a bit of a temper and he'd had tantrums with us before.' Recording a verdict of accidental death at the inquest in Scarborough Coroner Michael Oakley said: 'There is no evidence whatsoever that he took things he had seen into account. 'He didn't have any particular temper tantrums other than those you would expect from someone who had just become a teenager. 'There had been a minor argument. The circumstances in which he was found do not suggest to me this was a deliberate act to end his life.' In a statement after the verdict, Jake's grieving parents said: 'Jake was a kind, caring and sensitive boy who had a wonderfully dry sense of humour and huge potential for the future. 'He had a special and unique talent for writing stories which stemmed from a fantastic imagination. 'We love him so very much and miss him more and more with each passing day, and are still struggling to come to terms with his loss.' Jake was a popular pupil at St Augustine's Roman Catholic secondary school in the town and a page on social networking site Bebo has been dedicated to him. It features emotional tributes from school friends. One reads 'your face just made my face light up in a way, just to see your big cheesy grin. Miss you loads'. Another simply says: 'Miss you every single day you have a special place in everyone's heart.' http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... w-Wii.html Odd. BR BR BR? Adam007
That's sad, but I wouldn't summarize it the way you did in the title. Kids can make stupid decisions about anything. There's always more to it, and that was probably the thing that sent the kid into a tantrum where he wasn't thinking and accidentally killed himself. ThurinEthir
I'm confused. He bought a computer game...To play on his Wii? I'm probably jumping to conclusions here, but it doesn't sound like he talked to his parents that much about it. Maybe about anything. But yes, I'm quite sure he didn't kill himself just because of this. He probably had other issues in his life...Whether they were justified by suicide, who knows, probably not... Still sad though. InkofDeath
Teenage, with a tantrum problem? Do teenagers even get tantrums like 8 year olds do? This was the first thing that doesn't make sense. The second is the limited information like we always get in news, that targets video games as bad. Perhaps his father said something to him that was already a problem with him, thus pushed him over the edge, and it wasn't video games, it was an underlying problem. Seriously. >.>
hellbellz
Seriously, if someone hangs themselves it's not going to be over a video game. There was obviously something wrong with this kid.
RichieMcD
Typical media article, includes very little info other than the info needed to point blame at the video games area. He obviously had more serious problems on his mind than not being able to play the video game, for all we know his dad might have shouted stuff at him that drove him to it but we will never know. Nom
I yell at my brother sometimes. Why? Oh, because life in general sucks. Maybe I was brooding over something and wanted to be left alone, and the last thing I needed was his chubby, stupidly grinning face popping up on me with some equally stupid thing to say. Maybe poor Jake just got rejected, or something. Wanted to lose himself in a game. Whatever he had going on, the game was the trigger, not the entire cause. Stilev
He must have been already seriously depressed. These articles always make videogames seem to be the ONLY reason. the trick is to blame video games as much as possible, without making unbelievable. I.E. mario jumped out of the TV and beat the kid to death OT: sucks :?
Ouchy
He must have been already seriously depressed. These articles always make videogames seem to be the ONLY reason. That is very true. The media only takes out the "juicy" bits that blame other companies/organisations. This happened at a school my mum works at. The kid was severly depressed and on medication. He ended up hanging himself and the media and unfortunately his mother blamed the school. Well, if you want a positive from this, just show it to your parents, and tell them to NEVER [bleep] with you, when you want to play video games. Lol, do you think you will really do that :? My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

ThurinEthir
I reread it, it sounds all too familiar. Something kind of similar happened to me, except I didn't go as far as suicide, though I did think about it. (I would never do it though) I was going through a rough time, as a teenager...Prone to anger...I would get upset at little things, because I had problems in my life. (Okay, maybe not major problems, but meh...Not the point...) One day, my sister was watching TV, and I wanted to play video games to cool down. Somehow, we started arguing, then my dad came in and I argued with him, then I ran off to my room and hid. Not. A. Word. About me being emo...Even if you're trying to be funny...Because you wouldn't be... Sure, video games helped lead to it, but they weren't the primary cause. Either he had mental problems or had some big problems in his life (Ditched by girlfriend? Family problems? Bullied at school?). And his parents acknowledged that he was sensitive...Well... deloriagod
Tantrum might not be the best word, but teens can be extremely moody and make similar emotionally charged irrational decisions. If you've ever watched Cops when they have a case between a parent and their teenage child you'll see just how true this statement is. HeWhoAtePie
I don't feel sympathetic for the stupid kid at all. He took is own life due to his raging stupidity, and stupid people do stupid things. It's the sisters, the games, the parents, or the school fault. Its his. At 13 you can make your own decisions. On the bright side, that's one less stupid kid to grow up and be a stupid adult. There's nothing in there that says he was stupid. It's highly doubtful that this was the only cause.. A very close friend of mine (and a very smart one, as well) got really close to committing suicide several times, and it's really likely that this guy was suffering from similar things to what my friend was. The article just doesn't say so. Anyone can make bad decisions due to certain things, at any age. Everyone does stupid things. That doesn't mean everyone's stupid. :wall: More than likely (like already said) this was simply the thing that pushed a really bad situation over the edge. And, judging by how bad that situation must have been, this guy was definitely deserving of sympathy. I once shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.Pics or it didn't happen. I hate my generation. True, but it was probably the best word to describe what it was how they wanted to, as well as make video games look like they make children throw off 'tantrums'. Negativity.

You're as bad as Abyssalwhip, and need to quit posting moronic statements. And who's to say he is "stupid" either? I don't see one word in the news article explicitly stating the kid was "Stupid", let me quote a contradiction: The talented teenager, described as a sensitive boy with a fantastic imagination enjoyed writing stories and poems and even had one verse published after his school entered it into a competition. And you say it's his fault? You wouldn't know if he had psychological issues either, which are mainly genetic. Leave now, before I feed you to the hounds, people like you ruin OT. Back on topic: I think there are other factors that contributed to him killing himself, and I'm noticing a lot of bias toward video games being the problem. I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal. OPEN WIDE HERE COMES THE HELICOPTER.

Hewhoatepie probably meant the kid was stupid for killing himself, not stupid as in bad grades. And just for the record, Abyssalwhips a cool guy, and his posts are FUNNY. anyways, here's what I'm seeing from this thread: Just about every single person replying to it is a 13 year old furry. The typical reply on this thread is 'omg the news is liek just trying to make videos games look bad' and 'there were probably some other highly intellectual psychological problems that contributed to this young furry killing himself :ugeek:'. And when someone comes in with a different oppinion, which is probably a very plausible oppinion, he gets flamed the [cabbage] out of. Hewhoatepie is posting what everyone is thinking in the back of their heads. You all just don't wanna seem like an insenstivie [bleep] over the internets so you post otherwise. This kids an idiot and frankly its his fault he's dead (obviously, I mean he is the one who killed himself amirite?) Don't bother quoting me, I'm not gonna come back to this thread, so all replies to this post are otherwise pointless. If you quote me, you phail at everything.
