  1. But he still at least has the bare minimum. Maybe it's because you're playing on Linux? I haven't tried my LiveCD version with it yet, but I don't care to set up internet on it again. :| 1) My machine is an AMD Athlon X2 1.9GHz processor, running Ubuntu 8.04. 2GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, and an NVIDIA 7000M integrated graphics card. It meets/exceeds specs. 2) It shouldn't matter whether or not I'm playing on Linux. Java is OS-independent. I'll keep rooting around for a solution, dunno if anyone else has the same problem or found a workaround yet.
  2. Either I don't have talkback, or I can't find it.
  3. His ignorance and irony are his undoing. Awesome. By the way, I'm curious -- has anyone else had a weird error with their Firefox? If I leave High Detail, Firefox crashes literally five seconds later. Think it's already been posted on the RSOF, and I'm using the latest drivers from NVIDIA (with much weeping and gnashing of teeth), but I wanted to see if anyone else knew anything. Hopefully a temp fix could be found. :P
  4. @r0ckyk34n3: What's with the lunar pillars? Did it have a glitch? On topic, those are some awesome places, but I'm surprised that no one's spotted the Temple of Light yet.
  5. One word: Beta. It'll come to freeplayers soon.
  6. Here's why it's lagging. 1) A LOT of people are downloading it right now. 2) You're playing with bare minimum specs. Give it time and at least one of these problems will go away.
  7. 1) JOGL, as I'm sure you're aware, is a wrapper class for Java to use OpenGL. 2) How else were they going to create such awesome graphics? [if the code's written once, never write it again.]
  8. How is it a disappointment? Sure, it's nice to have a JMod to chat with every now and then, but why are you wearing your emotions on your sleeve with this one? I, like you, have been playing for about six years, and I've seen and spoken to a grand total of two Jagex Mods. It doesn't bother me as much because I realize that they're not here to chew the fat with me, they're out investigating what major bugs need fixing out in a certain section of the game. By them not talking with me directly, I don't feel like they're shunning me out or anything like that. They're busy, and that's all that really boils down to. But let's be nice and hypothetical here, and see something else -- what if they weren't really busy? Let's pull a random Mod out of the air...oh, say...Mod Craddock (Suggestions board, old High-level suggestions thread). What would you and he have a talk about? An in-game suggestion? A complaint? Just to say hi? Thanking him for his hard work and endeavors? Or would you just want to have the link for the sake of having it? I want you to see where I'm going with this -- even if you did get the link, what would you do with it? There are many other channels of communication that one could use to get the above -- while they may not post nearly as often as we'd like to see, at least they do read the boards. 1) You have no evidence he cheated. 2) Player Mods are a special sort. They're hand selected by Jagex anyway. 3) A veteran player might not make the best person to talk to. 4) Who deserves higher priority, a volunteer Player Moderator asking a question about their duties, or a "veteran" that wants attention?
  9. I'm willing to believe that it was about how Pest Control was literally an XP factory, and many veterans (myself included) utterly despised it. But now, I can simply look at it as another way to train, and there is a sacrifice of Slayer exp for (marginally) faster Combat exp. It's strange that many people would remain so resistant to others just because of the methods they trained. Just don't let it get to you much.
  10. If you *really* think that Jagex is being distant on purpose, consider this: 1) Jagex has about 300 full-time employees. Found this on Wikipedia. 2) RuneScape has about 4 million or more accounts active, 1.25M of which are members. 3) Simple math dictates that if they were talking to only members, there's 4,166(2/3) of us for every one of them. Take that stat to include talking to freeplayers, and there is about 13,333(1/3) of us for every one of them. 4) Real math would also indicate that given an average of about 195,000 players on at any given weekend, that's 650 of us for every one of them. 5) When a Jagex Moderator logs in, it ain't to chew the fat; they're out doing their job. 6) Not every Jagex Moderator deals with Customer Support, nor do all of them interact with any set group of players at any given time of the day. 7) The amount of UK RuneScape players pales in comparison to the amount of US players, which is the main crowd seeking attention from the mods. Besides that, companies grow, things get less personal. It's a fact of life. Not really much you can do to change it except to post on their forums.
  11. @Madeof12une: It *looks* like an integer went too high. But that's only from the surface, I haven't seen the code nor do I know what programming language he used. I assume it's Visual C++ or Visual C#. You'd have to talk to 3HU about this one.
  12. Well, now you know how we feel. Many of the people that counter your [flawed-beyond-reason] rants/points aren't Jagex fanatics. We're reasonable, coherent, and if we see a stupid argument, we'll sure give you a stupid reply. If you don't like the way we respond to your rants, then construct them in a way where meaningful discussion and debate can take place, and do your best to not get upset when someone proves your wrong. It's just we've seen the same ol' sandwich around here and many of us would like to get the memo out: Finish up or get off the pot.
  13. I've wondered that as well, and have two theories: First, perhaps the testers don't know enough about RS to know that some things are bugs. Maybe pets are supposed to act as safespots. Second, perhaps they never test content by simply playing normally. It's quite possible they become tunnel visioned into "try everything possible to see if you can break x" that they don't even notice a bigger more obvious bug that you find over the course of normal play. Either way, something is definitely wrong if bugs are getting out that most players are affected by. I believe that there's a third alternative. You see, everyone plays the game/uses content differently. Perhaps someone found a unique and out-of-the-box method to break the content, which is why the bug was never picked up. Of course, at this point in time, it's something that's probably not code-breaking, but more or less, still needs to be fixed.
  14. This is the reason that people don't like using real-world analogies -- they can't find a real-life punishment to justify the in-game one. Doing 36 in a 35 zone is a speeding ticket [from a seriously aggravated cop; you can go ±3MPH the speed limit in my state], or in RuneScape's terms, a warning. Real-world trading is honestly like embezzlement. Now, as to why you think they didn't affect the game...In all respects, it's their fault that the game had to be clamped down as tight as it is today. By them breaking the rules time and again, after repeated warnings from Jagex and pleas from the community, the game had to be changed in a way that many people disliked. They didn't affect the game? Ask the PKers if they weren't affected by RWT. If I knew someone that did RWT, I'd probably block them. But none of my friends do.
  15. "Spadeful of drugs". That's not the same as a shovelful of coke, despite your slang teachings to the contrary. Why's that? Shouldn't you be a good player in the first place? Or have you not noticed the cameras all around you at every time in the day? [i already know the allusion to 1984, I've read it, and it applies here. But you should still follow the rules.]
  16. You died in the wild, got your things back, and are complaining? I don't get it. But anyway, Revenants are way better at this than an original PKer would be. I'm willing to bet you would have never been able to kill the PKer for your things back, whereas you don't even have to engage a Revenant. Their power is to make deep Wild dangerous again; you came face-to-face with that power. Can't complain because you died to them. Oh, as an added bonus, you didn't get taunted with "pwnd u j00b". :P
  17. It's actually 100% valid, if you ask me. Whether or not a word is bad is all in connotation, and in many cases, doesn't need to be reported. For example, I type easily 86WPM, and sometimes in my typing frenzy, I will often mistakenly misspell words, or add spaces where they do not belong. [in this case, let the word be earmuff, or ear muff]. I tell my friend, "Where do you get the face mask and ear muff?", it comes out as "Where do you get the face mask and ear ****?". I don't think that the phrase was offensive in any way, and a report on this basis would waste time. Now, if someone said "******* revenant it killed me ******", that would be a legitimate report. Of course, you don't have to report it, it's much easier to ignore them.
  18. The short answer to your question is "no", as explained earlier, a recovery disc is part CD, part partition on your other hard disk, and you cannot use the recovery disc to (re)install the OS. The best solution would be to find a friend that has a copy of Vista (your version) OEM, borrow the disc, and use the key on the bottom of the laptop. I wouldn't ghost the machine for the simple reason that it's not going to be worth the stress and aggravation of the whole ritual.
  19. I agree with Blossom's last statement there. Do not do a BIOS update just because the manufacturer says there's a new version out. Searching through the ASUSTeK site, I see that the update is only to support more processors. Now unless you plan on buying a new CPU, don't even consider this update. But, if you still want to, here's a few tips that I have: 1) RTM. You've got to read the manuals on everything and I mean everything. Follow their instructions to the letter. 2) Wait about a week before doing the BIOS upgrade, just to check to see if your home's electricity is stable enough. If you get any power surges/blackouts in that time, scrap the update until a later date. 3) I don't really approve of doing it through Windows, but if your machine doesn't have a floppy drive OR a way to boot from USB, you're pretty much stuck. There are some guides out there that can help you turn a USB into a bootable device, which is pretty helpful in many cases. 4) Be forewarned: If the BIOS update goes wrong, the machine *may* become an expensive brick. Be careful.
  20. Here's a good reason - it's against the Terms and Conditions of the Jagex site. The countless hours you've spent playing the game, getting all of this stuff mean absolutely nothing when it doesn't belong to you in the first place. Want more? Here's a laundry list. * It makes legitimate, long time players extremely upset, which causes a mass exodus * It makes it pointless to level skills except to wear cool stuff * It makes the game a whole lot less fun * If you're still playing, it makes the game a nightmare when you're trying to harvest goods [read] * It *may* give Jagex profits for the first three months, but after that, you're looking at a ghost town of a game First line: By your logic, as long as someone of a certain ethnicity or someone of a certain wealth bracket is not in the room when I "insult" them, then there's no harm done. What a load o'bull. Generally, if you'd feel ashamed to say the exact same thing to a respected authority (i.e. grandparents), then it's offensive. Second line: What bug is not harmful to the game? As a programmer, any bug, no matter how minor or benign it may seem from the end-user stand point, is always going to be perceived as "harmful". Doesn't matter if it means an extra Dragon Chainbody drop from the KQ or the Falador incident, or even something that's seriously benign as the lean-over-and-hover-glitch, it's still harmful, full stop. You contradict yourself in such a painful way. Again, by your logic, someone that breaks the rules of society, in turn, does not really harm society, and we should not hate them for their [non]-disruptive actions? Just sit back and think about that one for a few hours. Not necessarily true. Macros were used to make mundane tasks simpler, such as mining, fishing, or woodcutting, and they were also used to gain an unfair advantage in RSC PKing (known as catching). RWTers exploited the usefulness of macroers, and as such, the two were intertwined. I have a strong feeling that players who wouldn't RWT were using macros before RWTers were. Okay, to begin with, if the following is your absolute best alternative option: ...then you're thinking funny. Making resource gathering more complex is NOT the right way to go. It would take bots about 3 months to counter, and give many legitimate players a headache migraine migraine-on-crack. I'll address why it wasn't lazy later. Next, I don't see how RuneScape seems more single-player from updates like the GE. Did you get every single item in your bank by yourself? Did you harvest every single raw item for you to level with? If not, then you're just talking nonsense here. Also, Jagex doesn't really control the GE -- many people love to loathe them on that point. Consider that for a time, most *every* player gathered price information from Zybez (even RuneScript did in IRC). One could have inferred then that the maintainers at Zybez were controlling the economy, but no one ever did. Then Jagex comes along, does something pretty similar (with barriers to make RWT very hard through it), and everyone all of a sudden yells at Jagex? To be honest, I feel a lot more flexibility from the GE than I ever did -- if more people would just use the darn thing, people would come to accept it, grudgingly. Now, as to why it wasn't lazy -- Jagex knows that there's no way to stop RWT 100%, so they went and mortally wounded the operations in their own game. They also chose the most effective method possible, from any standpoint -- they went for the jugular of RWT where they could control them best. It takes a lot of manpower, money, and time to ban 25-45,000 suspected RWT accounts and macroers, and by the time you finish with the first load, about 3 times more has already registered and is back in the swing of things. Personally, cutting RWT off by retooling PvP, eliminating unbalanced trade, eliminating drop trades, and regulating item prices through the GE was a good move. If you don't think so, consider my reasons: 1) Reactive banning has a very benign effect. One bot banned, ten bots created, all under an hour. 2) IP banning has a very limited effect. One IP address banned, another one created, thank you very much DHCP. 3) Sending wave after wave of Jagex Moderators after bots strains resources; where one Mod could be working on a new and exciting update (such as GWD), they're instead out in the game, trying to bust bots. 4) Oh, that doesn't mean the Mods aren't getting paid, by the way. That's monetary resources being spent, too. And no new content was worked on today. 5) Hiring more staff to only deal with the bots isn't going to help much, either. It's just an exercise in futility on a much grander (and more expensive) scale. I'll admit that the methods that Jagex employed were not 100% sure to get rid of RWT, and there are some [very small] loopholes being exploited [which the players who know how it happens need to speak up before another serious update hits] but by stark comparison of what the communities (and I mean all of them) have offered, 98% effectiveness is more acceptable than < 1%.
  21. I find it ironically funny that the only group of players complaining about the "youth" of RuneScape are in fact, teenagers, aged 13-17. Even more ironic, they act even worse about the people they're complaining about. It's also rather hilarious that absolutely none of your images even flow with what you're on about. Just pay close attention, won't you. You can't prove that this game is being geared for children younger than 13. Even if you insist on arguing this point, you probably can't find evidence to support it. Do yourself [and everyone else] a favor; get off your soapbox, get on RuneScape, have fun, and try not to care about everyone's "age".
  22. If you know the hacker's MAC address, then you can easily block him from ever getting access to your machine. When you do your MAC filtering, simply block their address from accessing your services. Post a snippet of a packet that you get when you see the suspected hacker on your network again, please. I'll also request the type of router you're dealing with, that way we could find some manuals to help you out a bit more.
  23. I really don't think all of those things that were listed even compare to bandwidth. So "utilities" isn't the blanket term anymore for servers, technical staff, and bandwidth? -.-
  24. Employee salaries Employee training/upkeep Equipment upkeep Equipment rental/purchases Facility rental Facility upkeep Furniture rental/purchases Emergency expenses Taxes Overtime budgets (including time and a half and doubletime) Utilities Decorum Vacations/holidays (I know that they do host company-wide Christmas parties somewhere) Leftover goes into savings for a rainy day ------ That's probably covering 99% of the bases for any company.
  25. god it's an effing game! I say joke about what you want and if some jagex staff want to be a-holes about it well do you want to play a game with this kind of staff. Besides they already took out a legendary pvp system and replaced it with god knows what. Ridiculous tyranny movements gota stop somewhere? Mm, the tyranny for you personally will stop when you hit the "Unsubscribe" function, and log out of all RS-related fansites. Besides, if it was meant to be a joke, it ain't funny. Kinda pathetic, really.
