  1. I agree. I would hold up Summoning as the perfect example of what high-level content should be like. The level 94 iron titan has incredible combat prowess, with a high max hit and a special attack that does a triple hit, and a significant boost to your armor as well. And as if that wasn't enough, at 99 the iron titan is upgraded to the steel titan, which has an even higher max hit, an even more badass special attack that does a quadruple hit, a ranged attack, and an even heftier armor upgrade. But out of mercy, even if you don't get the last few million experience points, you can still use an iron titan without going all the way to a skillcape. And as you go down the line, there are very few large jumps in power level--every couple of level-ups has a new familiar to summon. You step down gradually from steel titan to iron titan to wolpertinger to geyser titan, etc. Furthermore, as you go up in levels, you also get cosmetic upgrades in the form of pets. It's exactly what other skills should look like, and I sincerely hope that future skills will follow a similar distribution of content across all the levels.
  2. Just double-checked my times. An air obelisk run is a pretty consistent three minutes, give or take a few seconds. With no familiar, that's a solid 540 orbs charged per hour. I might give it another go with a beast of burden.
  3. Yes, willows are best. I tried oaks as well, and they weren't particularly impressive.
  4. Well the thing is that even in single combat, a healer or beast of burden can drastically improve your longevity, so it's still kind of like having extra hp levels, instead of extra attack and strength levels with a combat familiar. And the stat-boosting scrolls can work in duels with no food or potions allowed, which can be relevant. Obviously summoning is far from necessary on pures, but it doesn't hurt, so there's no real reason to avoid training it either.
  5. In regards to this, I would point out that high-level players appreciate relevant updates more than low-level players, because they've experienced more of the existing content already. Lower-level players already have a pretty hefty checklist with just the stuff that's already out there--all the stuff they haven't already done is effectively just as new as whatever came out last week. So while the occasional low-level update is fine, it's preferable that Jagex should target mid- to high-level players with most of their updates. This is the same reason I think that all new quests should be continuations of existing storylines. (So far this year, they all have been except the Phoenix, which was a holdout from the previous year, so even though the quest rewards have been mediocre lately, I'm happy with the new quests.)
  6. Well yes, the combat level from summoning applies when you have a pouch in inv, recently dropped, or currently summoned. And if you're training on rock crabs, that's a place where you can use a combat familiar for faster xp.
  7. This issue was addressed in Postbag 19, actually. I believe it was clarified quite nicely. Count Draynor is referred to as a "vampire" in the Vampire Slayer quest, but probably only out of the locals' ignorance.
  8. If you mine pure essence to 200m mining xp, you'll get almost 6 billion gp. It's still a horrible, horrible, horrible idea. The same general principle applies to sharks. Any moneymaker is going to make you kajillions if you do it for a thousand hours. That doesn't make it a good source of cash. (Although I catch them a bit faster than 120 sharks/hr...I typically get closer to 150/hr at 99.)
  9. The 26k thing wasn't a problem for the economy because no actual money was entering the game, just items. The problem arose when the drop system changed, and players started dropping large amounts of cash instead of valuable items--similar to coinshare, but on a much larger scale. The effect, as we have seen, was inflation.
  10. Only if you bring a familiar with you. :ugeek: And you can still use them for training. Combat familiars speed up your combat training.
  11. Wow, that's a real solution, isn't it? Take existing content and increase the requirements. Totally not a cop-out, right? Because it has such a huge impact on high-level players. Honestly, that's a stupid idea. It's the exact same content. High levels can already use it. Raising the requirements does nothing to create high-level content. Imagine if you for some reason raised the requirement for godswords to 99 attack. People with under 99 attack would be royally pissed off, and people with 99 attack won't see any change at all. You get absolutely no benefit except to say that you now have high-level content, which is really just fake difficulty. (And you could do the same thing by making up a new item and not piss off the people with 75 attack.) It's like a video game that claims to have "replay value" because you can go back and fight the bosses again in "Time Attack" mode to unlock the ability to change the color of your character's hair. And there are ten different Time Attack Mode variations that unlock ten other new hairstyles. And once you unlock all the hairstyles you get a trophy. And once you unlock all the trophies you get the ability to restart the game at the same difficulty, but in "Sombrero Mode," with all the enemies wearing sombreros. That's not replay value. That's fake longevity. It's the same thing as if the player just played through the original story mode a dozen times. (Although the sombrero mode sounds cool.)
  12. I would point out that ranged is very important for plenty of boss monsters, the most notable of which is obviously Kree'arra, but there's also Tormented Demons, Zilyana, TzTok-Jad, etc. But magic is still garbage in PvM. I can definitely agree about price manipulators. I would add abuse of the PvP system with the "76k" thing.
  13. Random update. #-o And the MA minigame was fairly lame, but the area itself (with the bank, spirit tree, and teleports) has been a godsend. And the ability of leprechauns to note your stuff. Was the Seers' Diary this year or last year? I've used the Enhanced Excalibur quite a bit.
  14. Since this is a game, it is the only argument that matters. Since it is purely subjective, it is an argument that has no relevance to the discussion. It is purely subjective whether you want to do slayer or not. I don't see why this is an discussion in the first place. Because the OP has claimed that slayer is one of the best skills in the game and put forth some very specific arguments besides "Slayer is my favorite skill and it's fun." I happen to disagree, on the basis that training slayer is a suboptimal method for training combat, earning money, and/or collecting charms.[/hide] One plays this game for fun (lets assume that). Training a skill is based on whether one likes the skill or not (or simply wishes to complete all skills). Xp/h and gp/h might be important factors for some people, but in the end, all that matters is whether you like to do the skill or not. I mean, sure, you can debate whether slayer is a good money maker or a good way to gain xp, but the topic starter wants to prove that slayer doesn't suck. And whether something sucks is purely subjective. Therefore all arguments are useless. It's simply based on preference. And preferences are different among people. Someone can state that slayer is bad xp/h and gp/h, and I'll simply say I don't give a crap, because I like the skill. And you have every right to not give a crap. But here we can happily define sucking as being bad xp/h and gp/h, or otherwise inefficient for most players, for the purposes of the debate. And the OP has kindly provided a premise that is conducive to debate, as well as suggesting some criteria. So there is still plenty of room for discussion. Obviously any skill should be trained for enjoyment; nobody is likely to dispute that. But this topic is for discussion of whether slayer is the "best" skill and whether it is the "best" way to train combat.
  15. You answered your own question. 50k bones vs. 800k bones. Seems clear. Would you pay half the price if it meant training sixteen times longer? Instead of offering an extra 775k bones, you could spend all those many, many hours earning back the extra money and then some.
  16. That's what they want you to think! :ohnoes:
  17. Summoning would be a great place to spend your money. You could train it fairly quickly by bursting rock lobsters for crimson charms. Even if you do plan on getting 99 slayer, it would still be worth raising your summoning a bit more to have better familiars to use on your slayer tasks, like geyser titans, or at least fire titans. Prayer would also be a worthy use of your money; however, the difference between 90 and 99 prayer is much less significant than the difference between 71 and 90-something summoning, so I would consider it a lower priority. In short, train summoning.
  18. Both bonuses will apply, but the clay harpoon will only double the original xp, not the 100 xp bonus from the gloves. When both items are used, you will receive 300 experience for catching a swordfish.
  19. Auto alching. Macroing? -.-
  20. Do Forgettable Tale of a Drunken Dwarf. The experience reward will give you 25 farming.
  21. You know, "Random free" is not the same as "Random-free." Hyphens matter. Just saying. As written you're asking about random areas that are free, not areas that are free of randoms. Totally different. And why do you need to avoid random events, anyway? They come up very infrequently, and when they do, they only take like 30 seconds and you get a free genie lamp.

Okay, how would you know that? That's just completely made-up. Not even close to true.
  23. A good thing to add would be when to stop your performance in order to hit the point range for the clown and agility outfits.
  24. I got the ability to craft the rings first and I've never regretted it, because I use the teleports for loads of things besides slayer. Even for slayer, the helm is only really important on a couple of tasks, and most of the Duradel tasks it's just a black mask with extra defense. If you use Duradel/Lapalok, you only really need the helm for Aberrant Spectres and Dust Devils. Granted, Dusties are a great task that only gets better with the helm, and Sumona adds Banshees, Basilisks, Turoths, and Kurasks to that list, but if you're using Sumona the slayer rings are also much more important to teleport to her. So if you're not going to be slaying nonstop, you should consider the slayer rings. The key is to just get assisted by someone who won't mind you making several inventories of rings. If you are going to be doing straight slayer training, then yeah, go for the helm.

You CAN be level 99 summoning and lv 15 combat. Do Death to the Dogreshuun and steal charms from chests. Tedious but possible (Kill sigmund with recoils). Although it is possible to do some quests at lvl 3 with recoils (it's even theoretically possible to get 99 slayer as long as the player doesn't get monsters that are too strong for them), it's almost impossible to kill sigmund, even with recoils. Even if you could keep up with the damage of 3 adds, I'm pretty sure sigmund hits at least 11 or a 1 hit ko to any lvl 3. Not only that, but I believe that the boss is "instanced". I could be wrong, but that means that a player cannot have any help killing him. Well, you get ranged xp from Death to the Dorgeshuun, so it doesn't really matter anyway. Besides, you can get charms from Soul Wars or Lootshare.
