New Holiday Item: Wings
Hmm.. Interesting... You can have leathery wings (bat/dragon style) You can have feathery wings (birds/angels) You can have gossamer wings (bees, wasps) You can have butterfly wings (butterflies, moths) You can have mechanical wings (ala Deadelus & Icarus) None will make you fly, but worn in your cape slot, would make things look interesting. I say, why not? - Sligo

Clothing Suggestion
Good idea, I like it. Along with this idea is to add a lock-able treasure chest so you can store miscellaneous junk you've collected on your quests. Perhaps it can be limited to items under a certain weight (5kg), non-stackable, and non-tradable. Even if the chest only held 10-20 items, it would help a lot. - Sligo

Flying is cool, so why not let our characters do it?
I'm lazy, too. That's why I use teleport spells, fairy rings, dueling rings, games necklaces, glory amulets, elf crystals.... Though I think flying would add a really cool dimension to the game (imagine fighting giant eagles as a slayer mission) I don't think the game engine can handle the three dimensional aspect. If you realize it, Runescape really isn't a 3-d game. It's really a 2-dimentional game with a 3-dimensional perspective (i.e. camera angle). If it was a true 3-d game, you'd be able to stand on the upper floor of a building, look out the balcony, and see other players on the level below you - complete with their conversations and all that. Those few places where you can stand at an upper level and "see" what's going on below you are such that you cannot get into square directly below the one you are in. Nice idea, but it won't work without overhauling the game engine. - Sligo

Wilderness Safehouses
I like this idea, though I doubt Jagex would go for it. To me, anything that helps a non-pker escape unwanted attention is a good idea. My favorite idea along these lines is an invisibility prayer that takes your dot off the minimap while the prayer is in force. You can't use the prayer if you are skulled, and when you turn off the prayer, you are stunned for 3 seconds. This safe-house idea can be expanded as well. I'm not sure that asking your attacker if it's ok would work - any attacker will ignore the message and continue attacking, and if you are in a multi-combat zone, you'd be massacred. I don't have a problem with getting randoms while in the safe-house, and I don't have a problem with pker's staking the door. What the safehouse will do is allow you to get in there and log off, hop worlds and hope to find a world where there's no one holding a stake out outside. You can stay in the safe-house as long as you want (no 5 minute limit or anything), so there's no teleport out (random or targeted, doesn't matter). The part I do agree with is once you've left the safe-house, you can't go back in for at least 5 minutes. Also, you can't go in if you are skulled. Again, I doubt Jagex would go for it, but it is an interesting idea. Thanks for sharing. - Sligo

Membership cards
I see this as a very good idea, though Walmart may not be the route to go. A smaller market like comic-book stores would be more appropriate. As for price, in US$, the cost of the card would have to be about 25% more than it's membership value, plus the cost of printing & distribution. I don't know how much it would take to do this, but let's make a couple assumptions. Say (for example), it costs about 10 cents per card to print, and another 25 cents per card for distribution (I'm assuming they'd be distributed in boxes). This makes the base cost of the card 5.35 for one month, or 15.35 for 3 months, or 30.35 for 6 months. Add 25% for the store, and here's what you get: 6.69 for one month, 19.19 for three months, 39.94 for six months. What this does is put the buying power into the hands of the person wants the membership (in most cases, the child, or the adult without a credit card). The child can work to earn the necessary funds and pay cash for the membership card, without having to have their parents help pay online. One of the comments made is the reason parents don't want to pay is because they can't justify spending $5.00 per month on a game. My challenge to this is how much per month do they spend on entertainment - cable/satelite TV, movie rentals, etc. Also, do they go to the store and purchase a game off the shelf (average price for new games is around $50.00)? I think it's more of a case that people distrust using credit cards on the internet, especially for a game, because they fear identity theft and other problems. This is a valid concern, but using the store-bought cards (even with the higher price), you are able to remove this risk. One final comment. Someone suggested that Jagex doesn't want more members because they would have to buy more servers. How wrong can you get?!?! Jagex is a business and they want to expand and make more money. Obviously, the cost of more servers is less than the money they earn from memberships, otherwise you'd see one of two things happening: price of membership going up, and removal of the "new membership" option from their website. Their business model is working, and working well, because they are able to expand and grow (adding servers every 2-3 months), and still be able to keep their membership cost the same. - Sligo

New Quest Idea-'A day in the life...'
When you complete underground quest, a messenger gives you a scroll to do regicide (I think that's right) a day or two later. Perhaps something along these lines so it's tied to the end of an existing quest. Another possibility is a sort of random event when traveling on a ship from one land to another. (Say to Brimhaven, just not the one to Entrana because you can't have armor & weapons). When you arrive at the destination, you are met with the assassin right there. Like other random events, have the assassin's level guaged to your level (same as things like zombies, tree spirits, golems, etc) Interesting quest, by the way. I like the magic ring teleport locations. - Sligo

The noob anthem
Thank you for resurrecting my song! I had a lot of fun writing it (and the tipit times article that it was published with). There are several other threads here with various rs song parodies by a lot of different authors. I'll draw your attention to Bubsa's thread where he has actually taken the time to sing his songs to kareoke tracks. (If you find the original thread that the Noob Anthem was published in, you'll find where someone actually re-wrote my lyrics in 1337. It's fabulously hilarious!) - Sligo P.S. Here's a new song I wrote that I haven't posted here on Tip.it. It's based on Glen Frey's Smuggler's Blues, it's called the 'Scaper's Blues... ----- There's trouble in the wild tonight, I can see all the bones I had a premonition, that I should not go alone My magic bow was loaded, but I didn't think he'd kill Everything exploded as my blood began to spill So PK, here's my treasure, got my clue scroll in my hand There's a little money now, I'll do it just as I planned If I'm cool for twenty minutes, I'll have my twenty grand I'm sorry it went down like this And someone had to lose It's the nature of the wilderness It's the Scaper's blues Scaper's blues The wizards and rangers, the melee'ers know no law The scammers and the hackers, the things no p-mod saw No matter if it's runite, essence, or hard cash You've got to carry weapons 'cause it's all about your stash There's lots of skulled-up characters, lots of trading deals Every one's buying up all the food that heals It's the lure of easy money, it's got a very strong appeal Perhaps you'd understand it better Runnin' in my boots It's the ultimate enticement It's the Scaper's blues Scaper's blues See it in the forums, you hear it every day They do it up in members, they do it in free-to-play They march up from Edgville, over to Varrock They hide up in the ghost house, and under ev'ry rock They'll attack you anywhere, even up in level fifty-two You see them on your radar, you say, "There's nothing I can do" They'll make a victim out of anyone, right down to me and you, me and you It's a losing proposition But one you can't refuse It's the adrenaline of Wilderness, It's the Scaper's blues Scaper's blues ---- Enjoy!

AWESOME addition to herblore/farming. Also helps crafting!
The non-pk aspect could work as follows: If you are skulled, you lose the effects of the potion (i.e. the defensive effect is nullified). Also, when skulled, the potion only heals 5 per dose. It's interesting, because linseed oil, which is extracted from the flax plant, was commonly used as a base for oil paint, up to the point where lead and synthetics took over the paint industry. - Sligo

the curse of the werewolf
I like your idea. There are a few things you could do to improve it though. First, the idea of just going and killing the leader is a bit overused. I'm thinking a couple things here - either negotiation or usurption. Here's thought - You attempt to negotiate with Vlad. At first he seems genuine, so you run off and do a bunch of things he demands in order to agree to not attack Varrock (or whatever). After about 5 or 10 of these missions (and they start to repeat), you realize that he's just toying with you. You go back and talk to Hamilton about it. He confirms that Vlad is being a liar, and probably has no intention of honoring a deal. Not only must you kill him, but you must find a replacement willing to step up and take over, and willing to accept a deal - perhaps an agreement to not attack if you help him get power. So you go around talking to vampires (the ones that don't attack you) and finally track down one who has the necessary charisma, but lacks the strength to defeat Vlad. However, if you help him earn the respect of his "people", then he will be able to take over leadership. The idea he comes up with is you go and defeat Vlad. Then, while others watch, he defeats you. But it can't be obvious that you've thrown the fight! So, in order to do this, you have to work with training him to defeat you when you are using one of your attack modes (training attack, perhaps?) So you go on and, with him, face Vlad. After defeating Vlad, the new guy challenges you and you fight him. If you defeat him, Vlad respawns and is tougher than previous. If the new guy defeats you, you get a cool cut scene where he proclaims leadership over the other vampires. After you respawn in Lumbridge (or Falador) and make your way to this castle, the new guy gives you back the stuff you dropped and this portion of the quest is completed. ---- What do you think? - Sligo

Taxes
It would ruin the economy! Oh, just kidding. Actually, I've toyed with various ideas on how to reduce the amount of gold in RS to curb inflation, but, if you think about it, it really doesn't matter. There are a few measures I think could be taken to reduce the amount of money in RS. Take each of these for what they are worth. They aren't really suggestions for change, just ideas of things that could help the stated problem: 1. Low/High alchemy: Make the returns somewhat variable, with the high-end of the range being what the normal amount presently is. 2. Stores: When stores buy things, add a little logic to what they purchase. Right now, the range starts at high-alch value and drops to low-alch value as their quantity increases. I think that once the low-alch value is reached, the store should refuse to buy the item with a message of "We have enough of these already" 3. Stores (again): Stores shouldn't buy unfinished items, like unstrung bows, unstrung amulets, un-blessed holy symbols, etc. 4. Bank fees: The bank could charge a deposit fee for certain types of items. Things like food (requires refrigeration), or heavy objects (ores and bars, etc) This charge would apply at the time of the deposit and would be minimal (1-5 coins per item or load deposited). 5. Entry/Usage fees: Like the Al Kharid gates (until you do the quest), charge fees to enter various areas or even buildings. Also, each time you go to pray at an alter, you are asked to give a donation (or they don't let you pray!) in the amount would be the number of prayer points you need to restore. Again, I'm not saying that these ideas should be implemented. I'm just throwing them out there for discussion as an alternative to a tax (which I'm not particularly in favor of). - Sligo

Tele everywhere
In the past, I have seen suggested this type of teleport, and I like the idea of "Coordinate Teleport" - basically, when you click the spell, you enter coordinates and zoom, you're there except.... 1. The location must be "ground level" - you can't teleport into a dungeon or into a building's upper floor 2. The location must be a location you can gain access to under normal circumstances - like over water, a mountainside, or a guild you can't enter 3. You can't teleport (in or out) of the wilderness north of the level 20 line The cost of the spell should be 5 laws, 5 bodies, 5 airs, and 3 bloods (or 3 astral) If you enter coordinates that you can't get to, you lose the ruins. And to keep this spell from being abused, you can only use it once a day. - Sligo

Draynor and Sarim = Port draynor? a new city?
You realize that historically, this wasn't unheard of. The king would deed land (with a city and castle) to his cousin. A couple generations later, their decendants decide they don't like each other and they split the land into two nations. So, yeah, theoretically, I can see divisions like this. Taverly/Burthorpe is a logical division because of the geographical separation (White Wolf mountain to the west, Wall to the east), for example. It's an interesting discusion, but I'm thinking Jagex isn't going to make this kind of change. They'd rather expand the map and add new lands to explore - which is fine with me. - Sligo

The ***Amulet of Legends*** Question Poll, And Updated
Not necessarily. The key is to locate the new teleport targets in different areas. Also, ardougne and camelot tele's are spell based, which gives mage experience. Using enchantment based tele's give no experience. So if I have the choice of using a spell tele vs an enchant tele, I always choose the spell tele. - Sligo

a crafting and maybe runecrafting?
I support the idea of crafting. In fact, I'd go so far as to have the guide show you a couple basic things - making a set of gloves and boots to wear, for example. For rune crafting, I think the quest does a fine job of introducing it because it goes in to the lore behind the runes. Something the guide really doesn't have the time to do. - Sligo

These are the kind of updates we NEED...
I just jumped here after replying to the article thread over in General (tipit times published August 11, 2006). Might check out my comments over there. I saw this thread and never posted at the time because I didn't feel like I had anything to add. Now that the current tipit times article is published, I do have something to add here. A. Though this would be nice, I don't think it's absolutely necessary. My RL house is cluttered with items that have no real use, but I keep them anyway. Selling them in a garage sale isn't an option. When you're done with a quest, there's nothing stopping you from dropping that item if you don't want it anymore. B. Again, I don't see this. Yeah, firemaking is pretty lame and lacks potential in the game. But every day I see people lighting rows and rows of fires outside of banks. It's like why people climb mountains: because they are there. Firemaking is there, therefor people will spend time training it. C. Agreed, some of the interfaces need improvement. I'm actually enjoying the various suggestions as to how to improve them. Though I'm not convinced that a petition will make any difference. D. What's to say about this? Again, a lot of great suggestions are made to reduce or eliminate illegal or improper activity. Unfortunately, with human nature being what it is, there will always be people looking for ways to thwart these measures. At what point does the security measures and support system get in the way of having fun playing the game? That's a tough challenge at any level. Yeah, that's life, isn't it? Can we really take credit for our ideas or are they just old ideas recycled and rehashed? - Sligo

Tip.It Times Presents: It's Getting Better All The Time!
Nice article. This is a topic I'm somewhat passionate about as those who have seen my comments in that forum can attest. I agree with the editor's comments that there are a lot of bone-headed suggestions that are nothing more than a waste of bytes on a hard drive. Other suggestions are revisions of ones we've seen a hundred times before. During my short stint as a moderator on another forum, I took the time to re-write the posting rules for their suggestions forum. I also posted a suggestion on the official Jagex forums a revision to their rules. Of course, Jagex ignored me, but what can I expect? The points I made were consistent with this article's comments. Basically, the rules I wrote said that if one or more of the following were true, then don't post your idea: 1. Is it on the restricted topics list in the official Jagex forum? 2. Does the idea fall outside the mythological, social, or technilogical constraints established in the game? 3. Can the idea be abused in any way to allow or encourage cheating, hacking, scamming, or other inappropriate behavior? Another thing I have about the suggestions forum - I see it here and elsewhere, is how people respond to the ideas posted. You all pretty much know my biggest peave is the "it will ruin the economy" objection. That's another topic entirely, but without supporting comments as to why or how it will ruin the economy, then your objection is meaningless. A lot of times people will object to an idea without offering a reason or offer any means to improve it. Come on, people! Some dude has spilled out his heart trying to come up with an idea that's original, clever, and might actually have some potential to improve Runescape, and all you can say is "Dumb idea. It will never work." (Shakes head in disbelief) Long and short of it is this - I, for one, want to hear your ideas. I don't care if you've spent a hundred hours researching it, or if it just popped into your head while playing the game. But before you post it, spend a little time to make sure it's somewhat original (i.e. not on the first page or two of the forum), and that it makes sense. Also, spend a few sessions here reading the suggestions already posted and the comments people make about them, and get involved in the discussions. So often I see a lame idea posted and I look at your post count: ONE. I just close the thread and go on to the next wishing I could reach through millions of miles of computer cable and smack you across the wrists. Good article, and good points made. - Sligo (P.S. I'm presently working on a new skill idea that I posted over a year ago on that other fan site. I'm putting more research in to it and making sure the underlying technologies are consistent with what's available in RS, and to make sure that what I propose is technically accurate. Look for it soon in the Suggestions Forum nearest you!)

Draynor and Sarim = Port draynor? a new city?
Here's my take on the idea: 1. Leave all the buildings right where they are now. 2. Tear down portions of the wall 3. Build a NEW Wall surrounding the entire area (have the player do this as an extention of construction?) 4. Build a castle, and have a new king declare the area the New Kingdom of Draynor-Sarim. Might be some interesting quests to help him get his kingdom established and set up trade relations between his neighbors, and to prevent the inevitable civil war, all that. Fun fun! - Sligo

members items in free to play
F2P'ers claim that life is unfair, but in this instance, Jagex is correct. It would be incredibly unfair for f2p players to be victimized by p2p players hunting them down in the wilderness using whips, dragon weapons, poisoned weapons, etc. Stuff that f2p would have no defense against. Sorry, guys, allowing P2P-only stuff to be used in F2P worlds has got to be one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. It's actually worse than giving F2P players a free day once a month. - Sligo

New Interface Button
I didn't say those were my ideas. I just said that these are some of the things that I've seen suggested. You're right - RS isn't AIM, nor should it be. But Jagex can take a lesson or two from the more established instant messengers and implement some of the things they do. - Sligo

Telekenetic grab as a method of travel?
This is an interesting idea. I can think of a lot of uses for this, other than just moving yourself around. Say you are a melee'er getting attacked by a ranger. Cast the spell on the ranger and it moves both you toward each other so you're one square apart! Now you're in range to beat on him! This could be a short-cut to climbing walls or "jumping" up to balconies. This could be a way to quickly get across a river, stream, or other impassable ground obstacle. Cools as it sounds, something tells me that we shouldn't hold our breath waiting for Jagex to implement it, though. ;) - Sligo
