Just a subliminal way for the government to make some easy money tbh.

Um... well not really no. Since cutting down on the amount of smoking-related diseases would actually take the burden off the NHS, and therefore reduce the amount of money the NHS is spending on treating such diseases...

And there's much more efficient ways for them to make "easy money".

Now bring it to the USA!

We have it down in Kentucky. I think it made more people angry than it did happy.

Odd. It's been in practise in Ireland for several years and something like 95% of Irish people think it's good.

Upon saying that I get the feeling that smoking is a lot bigger in USA than Ireland, as the Irish, stereotypically, lean towards drinking a lot whereas there's tonnes of [bleep] brands from the USA. I'm not saying im right about any of that though, just my personal assumption.

OK, so we've got the smoke smell out of the way, now to get rid of the remains of Doner Kebab in the teeth after a night out.

Haha, that'll never die

I think if it helps people quit in the least, it's a good thing, and i'm sure it'll be great for waitresses and barmen working in smoky places who don't like the smoke. As for me, it never massively bothered me, but it'll probably make a nice change.

"Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

we in scotland have had that ban for almost a year and half -.-

its good to see england finaly get off their [wagon] and ban smoking in public places as well

landlords shouting "We'll go out of business, it's a breech of our civil rights!" (etc.) don't have much leg to bat off!

I'm glad the ban's being put into effect!

I'm glad too, bloody horrible things. The lengths the landlords have gone to is brilliant, this guy for example. http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,, ... 72,00.html

Failed in the end, but isn't the idea brilliance.

That is true brilliance. The idea would have worked if only they hadn't chosen an Island that wasn't owned indirectly by the UK. Mind you, they did say they had a plan B...

I have no idea why I'm supporting this, I personally hate smoking and fully support this law, but these technicality cases are funny

It's gone down OK here, and the only trouble it is causing is the obvious places (pubs etc.).

There is a problem though. Public places where a ban on smoking is already in place have to have non-smoking signs. This is ok, but when you stick white and red plastic signs over every ancient enterence into a cathedral (and there is no way around it), it looks kinda disrespectful and that there are already signs in place which fit into the building style already.

Thanks god they banned it .. I hate smoking. It isn't healthy, even the people around that dont smoke get affected from the people who smoke, especially when you breath the poisonous gas *Carbon monoxide (CO)*.

No more possible diseases to occur probably, like lung cancer, mouth cancer and heart diseases ::'

Thanks for sharing this

Yeah, that could have been it.

I also think it made people mad because they banned it from all public places, which included cigar bars/pubs. Those places lost tons of business when it happened, which angered the general public. Personally, I don't really care.

Don't pretend like you know the chemistry behind smoking-related diseases. CO hardly affects the respiratory system of the body - the only reason CO is poisonous is because the haemoglobin in our blood has a higher affinity for it than oxygen. However, the amount of proteins that can be poisoned in this way is tiny compared to the sheer number of them. Nor does CO actually induce cancer... that's caused by carcinogenic molecules such as benzene and its derivatives.

Also, it takes a lot more than a smoking ban to stop cancer in its tracks - there are millions of other things in this world that can cause these types of cancer. Having said that, you're right, it's a step to prevent illnesses such as that, but then ban is more to designed to protect those who work in bars rather than those who socialise in them. Call it Health & Safety, if you will.

Now bring it to the USA!

I agree. It's bad enough that people smoke but if they want to, then we can't and shouldn't try to stop them. The only thing we can do is restrict them from smoking around non-smokers. Anyone who is against this is just ignorant. Nothing bad comes out of this.

Don't be ridiculous. Getting the occasional whiff of someones smoke isn't going to give you cancer! Whats next you'll get Coxsackievirus (hand-foot-mouth disease) from sniffing one of my farts?

If it offends you so, hold your breath, or cross the street, as you obviously should other wise you might get the cancers!!1one I mean hey, I have to avert my gaze when you walk passed, other wise I might catch the ugly.

Actually, if you spend alot of time around smokers, the toxins you inhale could cause problems. Sidestream smoke actually contains more toxins than firsthand, due to filters on cigarettes. He was perfectly correct.

Im glad that the smoking ban is being introduced. At long last there is actually something being done that may be quite effective towards the horrible addiction of smoking.

There is nothing worse than trying to eat in a smoke filled room :XD:

Comes into place in about 7 hours I think. Good news imo.

We've had the smoking ban in Wales since the 2nd of April. It's great, I'm all for having clean air. But there is a slight downfall. On going to pubs/clubs since the ban I have noticed that without the mask of smoke, other smells are now rearing their disgusting heads, i.e. stale alcohol, vomit carpets and sweaty bodies. Eew.

I'm not saying that this is comparable to people's health, I'm merely making an observation.

I hate when you are walking past a smoker and the wind blows your way... Annoy me so.

People who have never smoked in their life could get lung cancer by just inhaling it

Walking passed a smoker a few times a day will hardly give you cancer. I'd be more worried about sitting in traffic for half an hour a day.

And yes, that 1/20th of a cigerette whiff that you get may be more harmful then if you took a puff, but come on, it's a WHIFF. Not like he is getting hotboxed in a empty spa pool with the cover on. Yes, living with a smoker who smokes in the house will be harmful, which is a no brainer, but walking passed someone on the street? Get over it PC brigade.

Now, THAT's a reason for me to envy Englishmen.

Smoking is pretty bad. I'm glad they're taking steps to avoid it.

Ohio recently passed a smoking ban too. It's been so great since that happened. Mainly where I was working at the time. The break room was always filled with 3-4 people smoking so I couldn't even go in there without choking.
That was all of Ohio? I thought only where I live

Yay Ohioans  . No smoke  .

(yes, I live in Ohio o_O. Huzzah! and whatnot.)

Go Buckeyes! Go Buckeyes!

Seriously though, I have asthma and ever since the ban went into affect(effect?) it's been great! I can actually into a sports bar without dying.

Whoever said smoking relieves stress is wrong.

Aside from the fact I wouldnb't mind if police could just shoot smokers on sight (Oh ya, I hate smoking that much, maby more  ) I do have a couple problems with the law. 1st why should I have to put a no smoking sign in my car? Thats just dumb. 2. Why no smoking rooms? Since smoking dosen't bear an aoutomatic death penalty, I say the next best thing would be to ban smoking outside, and make it legal only in rooms the filter the air beofre releasing it to the inviroment. This keeps our air clean and gives the smokers concentrated second hand smoke which is exactly what they deserve.

And if anyones interested, I feel this much sympathy for anyone who gets addicted to any illegal substance as well, but I think I hate smokers the most.

rooms that filter the air beofre releasing it to the enviroment.

And who's paying for that? Smokers are already wasting billions of pounds of tax-payers' money, do you think they would want to spend more money building these rooms and special facilities to accomodate smoking?
