Careers and possibilitys

I was wondering, if you could choose one career what would it be?

I'm at the right time to really decide what to be, and I'm torn between 3 things.

1 - Author, I love creativity, to write, and to get lost in the fantasy.

2 - Singer, I love music, and the insperation it gives me, I have been told I am good at singing, and came 3rd last wednesday in a singing contest. I lost to two people 5 years older than me.

3 - vet. I just love animals so much, and helping them would just be great. Except, this is the one I'm least likely to choose, as it is hard work, and I would have to put some of them down.

What do you think?

Two things. One is making 3D models/general artwork for a top notch video game company (like bioware, bethseda, blizzard) or learning more programing and end up getting into the industry self employee'd.

I'm going to college for the former, and possibly second some day.

edit: I'm not sure about your choices. Problem with #3 is that even if you're an animal lover you don't want to be a vet just because of it. It is hard work but you will have to see suffering animals all day long, if you have a weak heart/stomach I wouldn't do it.

choose #3. honestly, it has the most security. The other two - 1, if no one likes your books, you'll be broke. - 2, if no one likes your music, you'll be broke

if you want, choose #3 and do 1 or 2 in your free time

Id love to be clever enough to work at CERN. That really IS something amazing what they are working on there.

Excuse my ignorance but what is CERN exactly?

It's the European Organization for Nuclear Research. They've got the worlds biggest particle accelerator I believe, somewhere near Geneva. There was adverts and stuff for it last time I was in Geneva Airport.

Ah ok, thanks. Figured it was something in Europe. :P

I think I've probably read some articles about them before on digg now that you mention what it is though.

A dream would probably be a musician, but I just ain't got the talent. No sense of rhythm, no quick fingers and definately not a bright or good voice. Better just stay at the audience and use my neck there.

At the moment the more realistic ones are either a writer or a politician. Both are pretty much the same: sharing your opinions with others and hoping them to understand it. As a writer I could do my own schedule and do whatever I wanted at any time I wanted as long as I managed to write something every now and then. However as a politician the salary would be paid every month and it would be stable, not depeding on the sales. However to get to that point at the fields of politics you gotta work like an animal without a real pay and have the luck to be at the right place right time.

Currently I'm about to start studying business at university level. Career from that part wouldn't be too bad either, but not like it would be my "eternal dream" or anything :P

If you really love the first two, and I mean, if you really love them, and could imagine the rest of your life doing them, then go for it. Anyone who ever taught you not to chase your real dreams and said "welcome to the real world" is only unhappy with how things turned out for then. You can be whatever you want mate - you just have to start working towards it.

Think most people here know what mine would be... :)

I would love to have the talent to make movies or music. But that's not going to work. So I'll just say a career as shop manager for Free Record Shop, because that's what I'm learning now. :P

Oh man, that's like putting a kid in charge of the candy shop! I'm going a bit green with envy here.

My heart lies in culture and the arts, but my talent is organisation and coordination. My next job will be with the government, to work for the department of social development. I'll be having a bit of a battle between my one self who wants to do very practical, direct stuff and my other self who likes to work on the broader level of policy making.

If you go for writing, I'd suggest that you study journalism. That way you get a lot of education on how to write and still have something to fall back on if your career doesn't take off right away.

Top 5

1. International motivational speaker (make it popular and known world wide) (I have my foot in the door at the moment speaking for John Hale and Team 10,000).

2. Children̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s psychologist and mental health specialist. (Currently finishing my degree)

3. Author - I want to write a book on my findings. (This will have to wait until degree is finished)

4. Poet - I have about 10 years of work in a folder. (I'm not sure if I will ever do anything with it)

5. Be successful in my business so I won't have to work again by the time I'm 25. (I recently became a business owner by the age of 21, so we'll see how it launches).

--

Either way I never want to work again by the age of 30, latest, unless I choose option 2.

My number 1 goal since I've been 12 was to be a millionaire by the time I'm 30... I'm working on it.

Sounds like I'm blowing air from my rear end here, but that is my dream and I won't stop until I get there.

The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.

I started university in political sciences but I'm not certain it is the right choice for what I want to do. Honestly, my dream is to be an explorer. I choose political sciences because I can become a diplomat or an embassador, which means I would travel between country and country. But my real interest is travelling all around the world. Now, I would need to find an occupation, or a find a way to live, while doing that.

Number 3. once you start your own family you would think back and be real glad you did it.

Maybe it's cause I'm in college or whatever, but singing career is just not really practical imo.

Authors often have fiancial problems untill you get a best seller. And even then, unless your book is as popular as Harry Potter you won't be too rich.

And believe me being an Author is WAY more work than Vet.

Vet by day, international (insert music type here) sensation by night!

OT: I have several career plans in case any of them fail:

1. Marine Corps.: Ive wanted to join the military all my life, my only problem is physical fitness, and Im working on that.

2. Bodyguard: Actually, I think you have to have some sort of prior training (such as the military), so I might join when I retire from the Marines, but if you can go in fresh, I'm there.

3. Commercial Airline Pilot: I love flying, and I really want to fly the new Boeing 787 dreamliner or the Airbus A-380, or maybe even the A-340.

my final fallback is something in business, but I don;t know exactly what. If none of these work for some reason, I can always turn to politics ::'

As for advice: become a vet, while keeping writing and singing as a hobby during your studies. Then again, I like playing it safe ;)

Myself, I went for a career in research, held a PhD position for 2.5 years, but that didn't work out. Right now, I'm employed by a chemical engineering agency, specialising in the control and safety of oil refineries and chemcial plants. My job includes revising and designing strategies so accidents like these don't happen.

In about 10 years time I hope to have enough expiernce in the field to be a freelance consultant. Safety expert for hire by the big companies.

Yeah, very true, I almost ended up down this path myself before being accepted onto a music tech course. Problem is, Journalism is a very competitive career, so you better have a lot of motivation and stick your neck out a lot if you're going for that.

1. Journalism/Author - This is basically my talent. My teacher actually told me she thought I had a talent for writing. ;D I enjoy reading/writing, so this would be a really cool job to have.

2. Musician - Pretty doubtful, but I'd like to play rhythm guitar/sing in a band. I'm getting one together with two good friends, and I wanna try Battle of the Bands in April. I'm writing a song right now, in fact. ;P

3. Music Critic - Paid to write my opinion, and listen to music. Holy crap!
