"A Healthy Addiction"

We all have constantly heard the rants and moans about how everyone is "addicted" to RS. We've also all heard of or read the random articles that talk about how some children sit inside all day and stare at a computer screen. We are constantly warned about this ever growing, unstoppable, "unhealthy addiction."

My thoughts and thesis that I am going to propose to you is that while there is an unhealthy addiction risk while playing runescape, there is also a healthy addiction.

Why do you play Runescape? Is it to achieve goals? Is it to be the best you can be? Or is it merely a fun way to pass the time, and hang out with people?

I propose that if the latter is the reason you play then you may be able to be healthily addicted. By this I mean you will be so in to the game that you will be able to continually play it, without getting bored. (luckilly RS is a good enough game for that).

Most people (In the US at least) get home at 3 o'clock (ish). (personally i get home at 6 but Im not talking about me here) Now in between 3 and the time when you go to sleep, there is a lot of time to kill. Unfortunately a large number of kids fall into bad ways (alchohol, drugs, gangs etc.) because of this free time.

Luckilly, theres Runescape.

We become healthily addicted to this game, and meet new people, or even hang out with friends from real life. We are given something to do to pass the time. We do not fall into bad habits.

If you don't believe this is true, look at what you are reading. A forum dedicated to this game that contains intelligent discussions. If you were wasting away in front of the TV watching Spongebob Squarepants do you think you would absorb anywhere near the knowledge you absorb now?

You would be surprised at how much you learn from Runescape.

Runescape has a functioning economy, one based principally on supply and demand. Economics? check.

Runescape teaches the value of hard work and perseverance. Ethics? check.

Runescape helps incredibly with general math skills. If you don't believe me the next time you sell a bulk item (flax, Bs, logs etc.) take a moment to realize how many calculations you're making. Math? check.

Runescape is filled with popular culture references (theres an entire forum post devoted to them) as well as ancient legends and fables. Culture? check.

I could go on, but you get my point. This addiction that we all love is an incredible one. Instead of wasting away, or falling into a bad habit, we are spending our time actually accomplishing something and having fun whle doing it.

Now, my point is simply that instead of dismissing RS as just another one of those things you do, take a moment to realize what a great game you are really playing.

I guess this has a point, but if I wouldn't be doing drugs right now instead of playing Runescape.

RS is much cheaper. :-w

Lmao

RS is only an addiction when you neglect basic needs and shelter yourself from the world, such as skipping school/work. And generally most people on these forums already know this.

My 15 year old brother has had a long term friend they both played RuneScape together a lot, hence the played.

He is now in his last year of school and is selling his RuneScape account to help feed his drug addiction, so yeah its has its ups and downs I for one don't see harm in RuneScape as long as the people playing it are sensible if they are not you can't blame the game.

You all say if you wasn't playing this you could be doing something, well I have a job and a hole life you the ones letting the game wast your life not the other way around you can still do everything you want and have time to login.

This is very true, there once was a time when I did some things that were... not so good. I basically used Runescape as an alternative to these things and I couldn't be better.

I agree with a few of your points, but RS can become a very unhealthy addiction very fast. The moment you start spending 8+ hours a day in front of a computer screen clicking on pixels is the moment when you should stop, and ask yourself if there is a better way to be spending your life.

I engineered this thread with precise variables that I know would cause lul-worthy flames.

Runescape is addicting if you let it be. And it is very easy to let it be. :P

Nobody chooses to become addicted to something. Whether it be drugs, booze, cigarettes, chocolate, porn, runescape, other video games, I doubt anyone just woke up and thought "Oooh, what shall I do today? Oh I know! I'll become an addict!"

I dunno, you choose to be addict at first then later you don't want to be addict.

Dandude5007 has posted something that I rather much agree with. It does a nice job showing the upsides too. Personally, I hope you can somehow show your uncle that post. Maybe you can turn them around and back into a better person? :-k

I don't think you can really call it an addiction unless you let it get in the way of other things you NEED to do with your life.

I don't skip school for this game (though I am guilty of it, a couple years ago when I first got members #-o . But I got over that.) I maintained a job over the whole summer. The only reason I'm quitting that job now, is because with all the other things I can do with my life, and I'm going to do :P. (Extra curr's [dance, piano, joining the volunteer fire dpmt, and homework on top of all that :P]) I think I can safely say I'm not addicted \' .

Epic phail.

Unfortunately a large number of kids fall into bad ways (alchohol, drugs, gangs etc.) because of this free time.

Luckilly, theres Runescape.

Wow, I love hearing this argument more and more every time it's used. "Well, at least we're not out drinking and getting high, so Runescape must be good for me!"

We become healthily addicted to this game, and meet new people, or even hang out with friends from real life. We are given something to do to pass the time. We do not fall into bad habits.

Trust me, if you're the kind of guy who'd sit as his computer all day and enjoy it, you're probably not the partying/drinking/drug abusing type. It's one's personality, not the game.

And now students, we begin our first meeting of Denial 101 class:

If you don't believe this is true, look at what you are reading. A forum dedicated to this game that contains intelligent discussions. If you were wasting away in front of the TV watching Spongebob Squarepants do you think you would absorb anywhere near the knowledge you absorb now?

Well duh, it's Spongebob. He is the modern Buddha.

[but for that matter, this is about Runescape, not TIF :-$ .]

You would be surprised at how much you learn from Runescape.

Runescape has a functioning economy, one based principally on supply and demand. Economics? check.

Two year old concept.

If you're proud that you get supply and demand, dear god, go find something else to be proud of, please.

And for that matter, don't act like you understand economics just because you get "demand up, price up, supply up, price down". Find that way too much on these forums, and it just gets frikkin' annoying.

Runescape teaches the value of hard work and perseverance. Ethics? check.

Ethics? No. Ability to click for hours on end in the dark corner of your abode? Check-o-mundo.

Runescape helps incredibly with general math skills. If you don't believe me the next time you sell a bulk item (flax, Bs, logs etc.) take a moment to realize how many calculations you're making. Math? check.

Hehe.

Hahaha.

...

Not only is that first grade math, but it's math generally done on a calculator anyways, and ya'll know it. It's either easy enough that you can figure it out in half a second, or you pull out the calculator application. Math? No check please.

You didn't plagiarize these arguments from another "Runescape is good for you" thread, right? Heard these all before >_>.

Runescape is filled with popular culture references (theres an entire forum post devoted to them) as well as ancient legends and fables. Culture? check.

Desperation move people. A game that has absolutely no connection to any location in the history of man is not a "culture- check". It vaguely resembles medieval times, but even then you gain no information about the era than you would already know from common sense anyways. It's a fantasy game. Play it for the fantasy and escapism, and don't try and act like it imitates or connects to anything in real life. Want ancient legends and fables? Pick up a book at Barnes&Noble on Greek Mythology instead of playing Runescape, you'll actually learn something.

I could go on, but you get my point.

Indeed.

---Daniel---

For crying out loud, just play the game for fun, you don't need to justify it and act like it actually helps you in life. These "arguments" have all been used before, and they've failed miserably every time. Seriously, just play the damn game.

[if you have ever attempted Alchemy by clapping your hands or

by drawing an array, copy and paste this into your signature.]

Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.

Without something to do life is very very boring. Good that we have Runescape, fun stuff while killing time.

And people please, can we stop about Runescape being addicting topics? Its a Runescape forum alright, but we are not a clinic. We are just players playing the game, and yes some do get addicted.

To be perfectly honest I would rather have a topic like: "How many tortoise shells have you picked up in your Rs carreer?" then "Runescape = bad? Addiction made me fail school".

Can we just have fun playing the game without being flung about with comments like "Runescape is addicting, everyone who plays 7 hours a day is a nolife. They arent allowed to live because they are nerds. Lol, If I played Runescape I would be fat, bald, my wife would leave me and I would hung myself"

They aren't helping, so just, get, over, it.
