"A Healthy Addiction"

I agree with your points, but you're making it sound the best it can possibley by comparing it to things even worse.

sure the game is better than doing drugs, etc. but the negative effects far outweigh the positives...

you may learn simple math faster, but should you be neglecting homework and such, you won't do well...

Imagine runescape as (potentionally) a social wrecking ball and YOU (hopefully not) the rotting, anti-social house

Yayyyyyy...

im not saying Runescape is the most amazing thing ever, its just amazing in comparison to some of the alternatives.

Now its not an "educational program" but though u may not notice it, you do get good effects from it.

Runescape is addicting if you let it be. And it is very easy to let it be. :P

Nobody chooses to become addicted to something. Whether it be drugs, booze, cigarettes, chocolate, porn, runescape, other video games, I doubt anyone just woke up and thought "Oooh, what shall I do today? Oh I know! I'll become an addict!"

My uncle did and now he is on crack and meth and has been to jail 3 times this year.

It's one think to smoke once or twice a month, but this is just bad :shame: :shame: . Cocaine... tsk tsk tsk.

Most people (In the US at least) get home at 3 o'clock (ish). (personally i get home at 6 but Im not talking about me here) Now in between 3 and the time when you go to sleep, there is a lot of time to kill. Unfortunately a large number of kids fall into bad ways (alchohol, drugs, gangs etc.) because of this free time.

Luckilly, theres Runescape.

We become healthily addicted to this game, and meet new people, or even hang out with friends from real life. We are given something to do to pass the time. We do not fall into bad habits.

[...]

I could go on, but you get my point. This addiction that we all love is an incredible one. Instead of wasting away, or falling into a bad habit, we are spending our time actually accomplishing something and having fun whle doing it.

Well, then I'm sorry that you and half this goody two-shoo forum have fallen into the nerd mindset of pathetically dichotomously placing alcohol and sex into the "bad" category, while stuff like playing Runescape is in the "good" category.

Wanna know something funny? Ghandi drank a ton as a kid. Ghandi smoked a lot as a kid. Hell, he was one of the most disobedient SOB's a parent could have, and that was in frikkin' India.

But hey, you guys are right, he drank and smoked, and turned out to have a sucky life and be a burden on everyone.

If addicted to those substances, yes, they can be problematic. But in moderation, they can be great for experiencing life. Me, even as a teenager I'm more of a fan of wine than beer, but I've got no problem with a buddy cracking open a beer and relaxing for a bit. Sex with a long time girlfriend? Whatever, just use protection, sex is chemically known to increase metaphysical bonds anyways, so more power to ya.

The same goes for Runescape. In moderation, it's fine, it's great relaxation. Problem is, you guys are comparing being addicted to something to doing something else in moderation. You're trying to justify your addictions by saying that someone having a drink at a party is a bad person, or at least does a bad thing. Drinking alcohol is not a bad thing. Alcohol is not a bad thing. Seriously, this is such a frikkin' stereotypical puerile introvert mindset- listening to everything mommy tells you and don't even think about it for a second, making the other person the bad guy so you can be classified as the good.

Hell, a few beers would be good for you guys. Grow up, get out of your frikkin' dark corners and experience the world for crying out loud, it'll do you a bit of good.

And I'm not just making this point for him and his statements about said discussed matters. I'm making this for everyone. This forum's chock-full of young introverts, so I hope you all get the message and try and absorb it rather than incessantly lashing out against it.

I have nothing against Runescape, it's great fun and great for relaxing after a hard day. I have a problem with justifying an addiction to it, or even just trying to justify it at all. If you think you have an addiction, do what you can to get rid of it. If you don't, then don't feel a need to justify your fun when there are are no points available to be utilized for justification. Just enjoy it, m'kay?

Wow, I couldn't have said that better myself. Or nearly as well for that matter.

What makes runescape "better" than drinking a beer on a hot afternoon? I can understand what you saying would be true if the alternative would be injecting yourself with meth, but guess what? There are other things people can do that dont consist of runescape or snorting up cocaine.

Has anybody heard playing a basketball game? Or going skateboarding? Or just going to the highschool/college football game? You dont have to be no-lifing a video game or getting drunk to have fun. I'd say smoking a joint once or twice a month is better for you than sitting inside everyday all day playing a game that will get you nowhere in the real world.

How do you choose to be addicted to something? You can choose to try it out, you can choose to try it again, but I very much doubt that there's anyone out there who makes an effort to become an addict.

A very good point.

When I come home from school around 3:30pm, I do my homework if I have any, and then after that play some games. I do go on RuneScape usually every day, for around 1/2 an hour - 3 hours, depending on homework, exams etc. But the difference is that if you told me not to go on RuneScape, I would just not do it, and find some other game to play, website to visit or book to read. School and friends come way before any game.

When you're at school, don't play Runescape during the weeks, you can play Friday and weekends after work is done. Do some sort of club each day, it really helps you gain more friends and get fit at the same time.

You do realize you responded in precisely the same fashion I told you not to? Oh, and with a condescending attitude to boot. Flawless debating style.

Way to reinforce the fact that you are exactly the kind of person I thought you were.

And no, I don't think you're an idiot, if that's what you think I'm implying. It's just absurdely obvious that you fit right into the category of the type of person I was responding to in my post. Too bad you're doing the internet equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and screaming "La la la!", instead of actually trying to hear and understand ideas that conflict with your minute worldview.

[insert long post from Reb here]

Reb for president. Can't agree more.

(Although RS is too much grinding for me, even for a small bit of playing. But that's just me.)

Besides, to go a bit offtopic, I DO think that this forum is a good place to 'advertize' alcohol and drugs in a good way. This place is full of young teenagers, who just are on the first stage of life of meeting such things. And when they are new to it, or don't know about it yet, it's the best to teach them the things about it what they should know. That is much better then getting those things to know 'from the street'.

If you never teach a kid anything about alcohol, except that it is very bad for you, and you should never touch it, he's bound to drink a fair bit some day when his friends tell him to do so. And when you dont teach him anything, he doesnt know his limits, which will result in getting him drunk. So when you confront him with both the good and the bad sides of alcohol, its much more likely that he can make good decisions.

And no, 'much more likely' is not a garantuee that it's not gonna happen.

z0mg, z0mg. I'm coming with a third and different perspective!!

To author, dandude5007:

There is no real "healthy addiction". That's an oxymoron just by itself, and doesn't work. You probably should've used a less opaque and unclear term.

I disagree that this "healthy addiction" can keep people from "[falling] into bad habits." Yes, it gives an opportunity to pass the time, but realize that those bad habits you mentioned can still be tempting when you're not locked into RuneScape and are able to get at people....unless they're so addicted to RuneScape that they won't even consider anything else, but that's bad too.

Oh, and I agree with Reb on your points on why RuneScape is beneficial. It's a game, and probably the only things you'll get are: better typing, fun from simple gaming, and maybe some nice internet friends.

To Reb:

That's an interesting idea you have that ALL things in moderation is good for experiencing the world. While some things may be ok (such as alcohol after you're old enough that it won't harm development), I disagree a bit.

The problem I have with what you're saying is that as long as you're not addicted, it's fine. Why? Let me use the sex thing as an example here.

Sex is good in the right situation, which is when people are married. Couples should be able to support each other, so the metaphysical bond things are good for them. However, sex isnt' just for bonds; it makes babies, which protection can't always prevent (as you probably know). Yes, there's abortion, but that gets into tricky ethics and junk.

So what I'm saying is that there is a difference between RuneScape and sex and alcohol/drugs and other stuff that lets you "experience the world". RuneScape is innocent fun (unless you pervert it into a horrible addiction), but sex (premarital) and alcohol/drugs carry potential harm.

[End argument]

If you would like to know my reasoning on this, it's that getting to know the world is 80% preventative and 20% corrective. Preventative lifestyle is where you listen to others' wisdom and learn from others mistakes. Corrective is where you learn from consequences.

Okay, some things I can tolerate. But anyone saying alcohol is okay, even in moderation, needs to re-think their life. <.< (I really wonder just how many brain cells you've lost already, seeing as alcohol kills them. :-k ...)

I will only drink alcohol when I'm ready to lose my gaming hands and their capabilities, and no sooner. The only reason I still have them is because I don't drink. :shame:

However, sex isnt' just for bonds; it makes babies, which protection can't always prevent (as you probably know). Yes, there's abortion, but that gets into tricky ethics and junk.

With birth control and proper condom usage, the possibilty of having an "accidental child" is .0002% each year (not per each sexual intercourse, per year), and that's when sexually active. (BC holds a 99% per year, condoms 98%, compounded it's 99.98%). Just throwing it out there for you.

And for the sake of both lazyness and argument, what about a married couple makes them undoubtedly better fit than any unmarried one to have sex? I don't exactly agree with the belief that sex has to be within the confines of marriage, so it'll be interesting to hear your opinion on the matter :-k .

So what I'm saying is that there is a difference between RuneScape and sex and alcohol/drugs and other stuff that lets you "experience the world". RuneScape is innocent fun (unless you pervert it into a horrible addiction), but sex (premarital) and alcohol/drugs carry potential harm.

The problem with that argument is that not only sex and alcohol, but Runescape, everything, carries potential harm. Taking your dog out for a walk carries potential harm- your dog may see a squirrel in the street, run after it, and accidentally get hit by a car. Auditioning for a play carries potential harm- if you don't make the cut, you can feel remorse and depression, which if taken too far can hurt one's relationships. Post-marital sex has the potential for harm, both because of STD's and the possibilty of concieving an unwanted child that the couple isn't ready for, nor capable of handling. In the same way, Runescape carries potential harm- and overly introverted lifestyle damages both oneself and one's relation to others, a necessary part of life.

See what I'm getting at? You can't just place something into the "can't harm, can harm" dichotomy, because everything carries the potential to be harmful. My point being, being careful and responsible in alcohol consumption and sexual activity can be not only not harmful, but beneficial towards living a happy lifestyle. Just like Runescape- in moderation, it can relax one, but in addiction it carries a much higher potential for harm.

Oh, and word for the wise: According to Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs, sex is a life necessity for human beings. This is physchologically speaking people; it's not talking about procreation, but the need within oneself. Sex is part of the frikkin' base of the pyramid, the most important part of survival. Hell, it's even listed next to air, food, water, and sleep for Christ's sake!

So ya, don't go around thinking that sex is something easy to live without, no matter how crazy that statement sounds :P .

<*Scuttles Rebdragon through a cheese-grater suddenly...*>

~Mr. D. V. Devnull

All right, why do you think alcohol is bad/evil? No offense, but other than mommy telling you it's bad, what problems do you have with someone drinking responsibly and in moderation? Sorry, I can't really respond properly until I hear your full perspective on the issue. I.e., I can't counterargue until I know what I'm arguing against :P .

Also, if you're willing to answer this, how old are you?

[Final Post Scriptum: When did I ever talk about drugs, and thus, why did you make a gargantuan anti-drug statement when I didn't even mention the issue?]

[if you have ever attempted Alchemy by clapping your hands or

by drawing an array, copy and paste this into your signature.]

Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.
