AdioLovesSquall
So, movies/video games are other popular forms of entertainment, but who knew they could have great music as well? indeed, many soundtracks come to strike us with their marvel and aweee... Anyways, all Tangerine Dream soundtracks aside: Blade Runner's soundtrack composed by Vangelis is simply stunning. Very dark, cold, but still human at the same time. It really fits well into the film too. Blade Runner Blues Donkey Kong Country 2's soundtrack is also amazing. Great game too, especially with the music. Relaxing, cool and calm. Katamari Damacy's soundtrack is just pure fun. No really, it is. Plus japanese rapping is really street.
ThurinEthir
I really, really, really, really love the music from the Lord of the Rings. Howard Shore is incredible, the orchestra (London Philharmonic, I think) is as well. The books are awesome, the movies are awesome, and the music is awesome. You can find the OSTs on Youtube, there are too many for me to link. I think DarkLordSealskin uploaded them all, not sure. There's also this website, you can listen to some samples there, and read about the various themes (Unlike most movies, LotR has no one theme.). My favorites... -The solo tin whistle (Pan whistle?) playing the Shire Hymn/Pensive theme. -The Rohan Fanfare on the Hardanger Fiddle. (Quite an amazing instrument...) -The Fragrance of Ithilien Favorite track, either The Fields of the Pelennor, the Black Gate Opens, or the Return of the King. Of course, all this has motivated me to try learning some of it on piano. Still working...Once I can play them well, I'll upload them to Youtube. : I'm quite obsessed, if you can't tell. As for video games, I suppose Brawl has some nice music. It basically brings all the good Nintendo music, which there is plenty of, into one game. I foresee Chrono Trigger coming into this thread, by the way. Cenin pân nîd, istan pân nîd, dan nin ú-cenich, nin ú-istach.Ithil luin eria vi menel caran...Tîn dan delu. Nadril
Chrono Trigger is too obvious to mention. I really enjoy the Half life soundtrack personally. They fit the mood of the game perfectly and aren't overly played in game. THIS is a 4:30min collection of some of them.
Poopingman
Besides the obvious RPG inductees, I urge you to check out the Unreal Tournament soundtrack. I ripped it and use it at the gym, its seriously epic! Metal fans, check out my band!Still the King....

How2PK
Mihály Vig, Werckmeister Harmóniák. What I generally enjoy from movie soundtracks are the works of Toru Takemitsu, Bernard Hermann, the bombastic Max Steiner stuff. Michael Nyman and Phillip Glass are two obvious choices. Hikaru Hayashi has done some great work as well. I'm not going to do youtube videos. Just watch some movies. Alright. One youtube clip. It is the opening scene from Werckmeister Harmóniák, you can hear the brilliance of the score in full glory, and maybe it makes some people curious to see the movie. It's subtitled, even. http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=VFmu7BYbthY The music starts at five minutes. But it's best to watch the entire thing. indy500fan
I like the Donnie Darko soundtrack, it's good if you want to listen to late 80s music. Requiem for a Dream is a standard that usually get's mentioned first... 28 Days Later also has a great soundtrack.

Tom_Servo
The Homeworld series has very good music in my opinion. As for lesser known movies, the soundtrack form Gattaca is nice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9nCLZ5eRVw That's enough from me for now, I think. Satenza
I thought Jonny Greenwood's soundtrack to There Will Be Blood was quite excellent. I agree, 'Open Spaces' is my favourite off that particular soundtrack. A fun little soundtrack is Cat Stevens' music from Harold and Maude since he did all the music for that film. With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

1_man_army
I like Ennio Morricone's work on Segio Leone's films (Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good the Bad & the Ugly, Fistful of Dynamite, Once upon a time in the West and Once upon a time in America). I like the soundtracks to a few Scorsese films especially Mean Streets, Raging Bull and Goodfella's. Bernard Hermann has a few brilliant one's - Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho and Taxi Driver especially. The soundtrack for Paul Schrader's film Mishima - A Life in Four Chapters is excellent. Phillip Glass did a brilliant job in making the music build and build for so long (feels like half an hour) until it reaches a frantic peak at the end of the film. Besides those the only other film that hasn't already been mentioned that I can think of is Forrest Gump. It's like a guide to 20th century rock & roll. He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. - Aeschylus (525 BC - 456 BC)

Ezz
The Kill Bill Soundtrack is quite good  Agreed, the music in Quentin Tarantino's movies is great. I like the music from pretty much any movie where the music stands out and is special (and fits the movie too of course), not like regular film music. blacksurge
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KzG4PRHXGw "The Legend of the Hero" from the legend of zelda wind waker...this piece of music is amazing. It's mainly harpsichord and some flutes or something, but it's so amazing...I have a powertab of it, and after listening to it it sounds that much more amazing. Video game musicians deserve WAY more credit than they get. Anyways, BBL OFF TO SLEEP WITH A RACCOON

Jernlov
Bringing this back to life. Hate to sound clichéd, but the Metal Gear Solid series has such an amazing soundtrack. MGS1 OST - Synth driven and ambient electronica. Fits the 'industrial' scene of the game well. See: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cE1QePupDfM MGS2 OST - Orchestral yet still maintaining a sense of ambience. Exactly like film music. See: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7j0_ZoPigMY MGS3 OST - Orchestral and dramatic, lots of attack from the brass section. Slightly jazzy feel. See: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=juH0HUVNnwk Yet to listen to the MGS4 OST, but I'll make sure to edit in or post what I think of it when I get around to it. Silent Hill 3 has an awesome OST also. Ambient rock and it really sets the scene for the game.
