They never really did much for me..

Maybe not for you, but they did pretty much START Rock and Roll. Some of the first to combine Country Blues and Rhythm and Blues. To quote the great Muddy Waters...

The Eleventh Commandment:Thou Shalst only say "Amen, brother".

Amen, brother

Amen, brudda (referring to the 10th commandment)

amen Bruder! (german ftw)

I'm invulnerable to everything, except Lenin and Dragoonson.

That's impossible.

jason becker takes the cake with this one..in terms of technical ability, yet still retaining that emotional feel to it that gives it that extra special something..shame he had to deal with that awful disease so early.

other than that,my personal favorite here being...greg mackintosh (1989 - 1995 era).

Chuck Schuldiner from Death is fast becoming one of my favourites. Great guitarist technically, helped innovate how the instrument is played (in the death metal sub-genre, at least) and wrote some great music, too.

Is it just me or does he make playing look so easy too? My bro and I looked up some tabs for Death. We're not even gonna try. :?

Nobody said Eddie Van Halen yet?

You are correct, and there is a reason no one has yet.

No one's said B.B. King yet because I doubt the majority of posters understand what makes a guitarist good *points to the above quote*. They just assume if he plays fast he's good; if he plays slow he sucks. I'm really surprised I haven't seen more Herman Li votes.... :wall:

B.B. King wasn't mentioned because he's not a technical guitarist. To be honest, I don't think he knows much about the guitar past the pentatonic scales, but that's all he needs to play what he feels. As far as the blues go, sure, he'd be up there. But when it comes to who is the best guitarist, I don't think he should be near the top. There's more than one thing to look for in a good guitarist, and the best would have to be able to convey emotion through playing and be able to play technical stuff, which is definitely hard to find in any genre of music.

alex lifeson, by far. the way he and geddy lee go back and forth and then together again, all the while with neil peart pounding away just never gets old. every solo and song has a particular taste and feeling, but with a recurring theme throughout the album. ive never heard a guitarist do this so well.

My personal favorite guitarists would have to be Tom Morello and Carlos Santana. I'm not going to say best because I'm a very bad guitarist myself and totally tone deaf :?

I think I forgot to mention Stevie Ray Vaughan, he's my current favorite.

I like John Petrucci, but I can't say I'm the biggest guitar-people around, I'm just starting to learn myself, but I can't really afford lessons. His slower solos seem to be better imo. I also like Santana, he makes the whole thing sound so easy and smooth. David Gilmour is also really good imo.

My favourite (not going to bother with best, since most of the guitarists that people consider the best aren't my type of music, and I know little about guitar either way) guitarists are:

Thomas Erak from The Fall of Troy because of his fast and chaotic (and awesome) guitar playing along with the fact that he is also the lead singer/screamer in his band.

And Buckethead cause he's just awesome, and he manages to convey a lot of emotion in his songs, even if he acts like a robot.

I love the guitar in all The Fall of Troy songs.
