Alg
Best of anything is. There's really no way to tell in an unbiased way what the best of anything is. I'd say David Gilmour though. Or Carlos Santana. Songs like Wish you Were Here and Europa are better than most other music, I think. Lateralus
Hendrix... not only does he play guitar insanely, but he also uses the feeback to his advantage like I have never seen from any other guitarist.agree!he could play with his teeth o.O and although he was left haanded,he used a righthanded guitar to make it "hard" for himself The right handed guitar was strung backwards to emulate a left handed guitar. There wouldn't have been a huge difference in the playability, other than slightly limited upper fret access. On my Strat the top cutaway starts halfway through the 17th fret, but you can still reach past it without too much difficulty. Back on topic, I'll have to stick with my usual answer and say that I love me some Ritchie Blackmore. La lune ne garde aucune rancune.

cheese666me
Both guitarists from Iron Maiden uhhh... they have 3 guitarists :? Why even try with that idiot? GordanFreeman
Steve Howe's been one of my favorites since first discovering Yes, and he's a huge inspiration to me. I'd say he's the best guitarist in my eyes...but I also love Jimi, Ritchie Blackmore, Duane Allman, all the good old guys. Rick Witkowski anyone? :D Definitely one of my favorite guitarists right now. Evil_Sabre
I agree with Warrior. It really has to do with the flare and the actual feeling that his music gives me as opposed to how complicated or hard it is to play. But I suppose different people will have different feelings about his music, so "the best guitarist" is always going to be a highly opinionated matter. I don't understand your reasoning here.....so you're saying that a bad guitarist who knows how to make things sound good is a better guitarist then someone who has unimaginable skill but is bad at writing music? You're comparing music writing ability with raw guitar ability, I don't think that's fair.

If you take guitar lessons, chances are your teacher is a whole hell of alot better than many mainstream guitarists today, but they're not the ones out there making all the money are they? It's a damn shame, but the only successful ones are the song writers with a bit of skill, not the extremely skilled with no song writing ability. Of course, if you have both *ehem* (Jimi), you're gonna make one hell of a musician. "El que no arriesga no gana"

I think he's best at making people feel things through his music though.

Jernlov
Although it's more post-rock, and he uses a bowed guitar, a mention must go to Jón Þór Birgisson. His playing is very good indeed; a very calming, ethereal sound. Steam | Soup | Last.fm

The only thing different about playing a twelve string and six string, and playing a double necked guitar is that with the double neck, they're in the same place. It's merely there for convenience, not as a test of skill or anything like that. "El que no arriesga no gana"

dru89
Seriously? Jack White or John Mayer It's now always about what you play, more how you play it. And I don't mean technique, I mean feeling. How much feeling does your music give? I give the award to them. :D Dru89's Last.fmDru89's TIF Blog

You must not listen to much music if you classify Jack White or John Mayer as the best. They might be able to write a catchy tune, but their technical ability is nowhere near most of the guitarists listed so far "He could climb to it, if he climbed alone, and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder." Technically speaking, he's quite a good guitarist. I'm sure you can find something on Youtube if you look around enough. From what I was hearing, he was playing some really nice bluesy lead work. Trust me, his studio work doesn't really do him justice as a guitarist.

Probably doesn't warrant him a rank in the top 25 greatest guitarists of all time, but it has such an amazing feel to it (which is due to both him, and the rest of the trio). Cool. I heard about his "good" work from a friend, but I don't think he's one of the best guitarists because of it.
